apostrophe. it spells it out instead of just inserting the symbol for some reason. Tim

FISHING 4 BROWNS???
Tim Bromund replied to monkey puke's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Yup as Brian said, find where the top of the thermocline meets the bottom (typically 55 deg) and work IN from there. If, for example, 55 deg is at 60 feet, consider that the outside edge of the water you want to fish and fish from 60 fow on in. Browns like warmer water than the other salmonids and are quite comfortable and active even in 67 deg or warmer water. It's not unusual to find them in 30-40 fow in the middle of summer. Most guys don't catch many incidental browns when salmon fishing because they are fishing outside of where the browns are hanging. Fish 55 deg water and warmer, usually within 20 feet of bottom using smallish spoons that run well at slower speeds. Browns also typically like a bit slower troll than kings, I try and keep it 1.8-2.2 at the ball when targeting browns (not always though, one day last weekend they wanted around 2.4) Browns are mostly a spoon fish, thin blades like dreamweaver superslims, michigan stingers (even your walleye size scorpions on a slider), evil eyes, R&R's etc. Green and purple are always good colors for browns and these days, goby colored spoons as well. I've taken some nice incidental browns on spinnys and flies, but that wouldn't be my preferred rig if I'm targeting them. I can't fish saturday, but I should be out fishing out of Olcott on Sunday next weekend, weather permitting. Feel Free to give me a shout out on the water, FishStyx on Channel 10. Tim -

Best distance of the riggers?
Tim Bromund replied to FT's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Yes, I have some set up either way with the fly leader running out of either the close or the far hole and really haven't noticed a significant difference in fish catching either way, both holes take fish. Tim -
Setting up a wire rod
Tim Bromund replied to Just Ducky's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Tim, I wish i would have known that before buying a pair of GL's. I was going to use them for wire. How hard are the washers to swap out? Thanks, Mike Mike, I'm not saying they are bad reels, they're not, just that the stock drags are a bit touchier than the SG series, very smooth once spinning, just not quite as smooth a startup Tim. -
Setting up a wire rod
Tim Bromund replied to Just Ducky's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
My 2 wires are on 9.5 Daiwa Heartland Diver Rods, so are my 2 power pro divers. I have 2 mono divers on 10.5 Heartland diver rods. If that older 47LC is one of the Great Lakes models, you might want to consider the Tuna Tom or smoothdrag Drag upgrades, as the stock drags on those GL's were a little sticky for something as unforgiving as wire. Well worth the couple bucks in any case. http://tunasreeltroubles.com/index.html http://www.smoothdrag.com/ Tim -
Best distance of the riggers?
Tim Bromund replied to FT's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
yup, 8-10 off the riggers with flasher/flies here also, never more than 15. We take a lot of kings on F/F's off the riggers on short leads, much more so than with longer leads. Spoons, usually 10-15 feet, though I will sometimes stretch them back 20-40 feet, and some times pulling them in really tight to the ball (5-6 feet) works really well also, epsecially for steelhead. Can't speak on Stoney Creek, but the water is up almost a foot from this spring at Olcott. I'd say it's about normal for this time of year at this point. Tim

The Niagara Bar at Fort Niagara is a popular place to jig for lakers in the fall/winter/spring. Here's some good info from John DeLorenzo's Website on drifing and Jigging the trench on the inside of the bar at the river mouth (at the green can) http://www.niagarariverguides.com/sys-t ... iagarabar/ Tim

Congrats to the Fishermans Daughter Crew for pulling in a real monster on what can only be described as a very tough day of fishing. 33.54 lbs is what I believe the weight was on this hog Despite the tough fishing, lots of fun was had by all in both the tournament and the family picnic afterwards. Already looking forward to next year Tim

They don't need to go into salt to achieve that size, it would take a different genetic strain than the Tule Strain Chinooks we have in the great lakes. The Kenai River kings get to the sizes they do because that genetic strain matures at 7 years instead if 3/4 like ours do. Still, we've hit high 47 lb fish in the past on Lake Ontario, so I suppose it is always possible for one to hit 50, unlikley though. Tim

Adam and I fished out of Olcott today prefishing for the Club Tournament this weekend. Wave forecast was WAY off, we had 2-3's with the occasional 4 footer. Fishing was decent though, started inside and played with the browns for a while, but our goal was to pick up some kings for the blacken salmon at the picnic following the tournament, so we changed up to a king spread and moved out deeper. Tons of shakers/skippies everywhere today. Highlight of the day was a 28+ lb king that is currently hanging on to 20th place in the summer LOC which ends sunday King came on a green dbl crush glow opti inticer and green crinkle atommik on the wire diver back 160 on a 2. Don't expect it to survive the weekend, but it's nice to put one up for a while. some nice browns today as well, but just the one pic, and this one is so so as the camera lens was fogged up a bit. we've already postponed the club tourny til sunday, hope the weather lets us hold it this year. D Q Brown Trout ???
Tim Bromund replied to Lund SSS's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
the bigger question is, how did the guy with the 26 lb laker manage to catch it tomorrow? Tim -
My 1986 8652 hardtop (same as 240 fisherman) has a 60 gallon tank. Tim

most people don't have boat insurance unless it's got a lean on it. you certainly do if you keep it in a slip. The marina usually requires it as part of the lease agreement. Tim
