Spiny Water fleas
Tim Bromund replied to ontariofisher's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Has Been, We have been splicing in 100 or so feet of 30 lb Berkley Big Game onto our rigger rods ever since the fleas showed up and normally that takes care of it. Last weekend was the first time the whale snot collected on the 30. I was about ready to strip the 30 off and replace it with 50 lb big game. Fleas out of Olcott his past weekend were manageable. Greg, where did you see that? This is the first I'm hearing of it. No matter to me, I took the CGA Safe Boating class back in 1996 before we even took delivery of our first boat, just curious. Tim

I've never had any trouble launching or loading either my old 19' bayliner or my current 24' Thompson at Olcott (or any other ramp for that matter) with the bulk trailers. I've personally seen more people have trouble loading boats onto roller trailers straight than I have bunks. If the trailer is set up properly, bunk trailers should be self centering as long as you don't have it backed in too far. I prefer bunks myself, I think they support a boat better, especialy heavy ones like my Thompson. On an aluminum boat, probably not an issue Tim

Scottys here. Tim

Kliph, Just because you can, doesn't mean you have to. My normal spread is 6 rods, even if I have 4 people in the boat. It would be nice however, when there is just two of us to be able to run my regular program instead if having to pare it down to 4 rods. That's about the only time I'd take advantage of the rule. I'm usually a proponent of the less is more philosophy when it comes to lines in the water. Tim

I've done it with the slide diver lite bites and didn't have any issues, those have stainless sleeves instead of brass so they won't get chewed up from the wire. A better option is to add a #8 spro power swivel (50 lb test) to the end of the wire (they are small enough to pass through the guides and level wind) and put 20 or so feet of 20 or 30 lb mono/fluoro on the other end of the swivel and run the slide diver on that. This gives you the stealth of the slide diver with the depth possibilities of the wire. use the standard wire line knot to attach the wire to the swivel http://www.lotsa.org/Wire%20Line%20Knot.htm Hope that makes sense to you. Depth Raider speed and temp sensor
Tim Bromund replied to Dynamic35's topic in Tackle and Techniques
They both work equally well (which is to say, great!!) and basically use the exact same technology, so it boils down to personal preference if you want a digital or analog display. I have a DR myself and couldn;t be happier with it, even with the small physical size of the display the numbers are huge and speed and temp are easily read from the the back of the boat. I've fished on several boats running the subtroll and they work just as well, I just prefer the digital display. Inevitibly someone will climb on here and make some nonsensical disparaging comments about the coated cable that both units use to send the signal back up from the probe and how awful it is. Let me tell you right now, that's a load of crap. The coated cable is absolutely no big deal. I'm on my 5th or 6th season with the same cable that came with my DR. I'd personally rather have the coated cable than drill more holes below the waterline to mount another transducer that you need for the other unit that those who pi$$ and moan about the coated cable will be shilling. That other unit is also significantly more expensive. I had my probe rigger down 160' a couple weeks ago and never lost signal. You'll be happy with either the DR or the Subtroll. One thing on the subtroll, Moor Electronics is located here in Buffalo, NY so they are a local company if that means anything to you. Tim -
Walleyejack is Canadian, are they maybe that much more up north of the border for some reason?? Tim

Dave, we caught a ton of shakers last year and quite a few 6-12 lb teenagers this year so far, Check out the one pic from my monday report, we had a 9 or 10 lb king with it's adipose, which I assumed would be a wild 2YO. I don't think next year's fishing will be that bad. As we've seen several times in the past, it depends more on how a particular year class survives than it does the number stocked. While I admit it is anecdotal, based on the large number of shakers we caught last year, I think the survival of the fish that were stocked in the 2008 year class was excellent. Tim
-
Rich, since the vast majority of the natural repro is happening in the SR, as long as that is where the bulk of the stocking reductions take place, that's ok with me. . . . . . . . . . . . I'm kidding of course. Since they will still need sufficient returns to the hatchery, the SR would be the last place they cut stocking numbers, and rightly so. It would still suck for the rest of us around the lake though if that were to happen. Tim

Greg, it's no more difficult to remove a subtroll or depth raider probe than it is a FH probe. The modified klincher setup is a piece of cake to set up and works perfectly to make the probe removable. Tim

The excellent fishing continues out of Olcott. No mature kings today, but plenty of coho, steelhead, teenage kings, shakers and browns to keep us busy. We had new LOTSA member, Morris Fried with us today. Another 20+ fish day. We started inside, setting up in 60 fow in front of the red barn and had some immediate action on steelies, teenage kings, and 3 nice fat brown trout. Picked at them in 60-100 fow until 0930 or so when the inside action dried up, so we headed north and continued picking fish all the way out to the marks we've been working the past couple weeks out to 400 fow, including a beautiful 12 lb coho. We had cold water inside early, 48 deg down 60, but that went away as the morning progressed, and as the warm water moved in so did the fleas. They were bad today, but not quite as nasty as saturday. Had our first atlantic on, dropped off right at the back of the boat as I was about to net it. It was just a little guy, but he was a jumping fool. Dreamweaver SS NBK on the 45' rigger and blue dolphin stingray on the 160' wire diver were the hot rods today, but all rods in the spread took fish. The 12 lb coho came on a laser spook on the 10 color core. Nice wild teenage king (notice the adipose) about 9 or 10 lbs the 12 lb 'ho trio of nice fat football brownies and of course: where have we seen THIS before Tim

Vince, very sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time. Tim -
Another great day out of Olcott. fished with Dad and Adam Gierach from 6:00-1:00 and again lost count of the bites, but I know it was over 20. We went back out to the marks from last week in 200-350 right out front of harbor and worked north, picked at a nice class of steelies and some super nice (10 lb+) cohos, but the mature kings we had last week were gone. We ended up swinging way back inside and ended the day in 90-110 fow, picked up a 25 lb king in 100 fow near Wilson on the nuclear green spin doctor and glow blue hammer Atommik on the 60' rigger in 64 deg bath water. Ran it in to the scale but fell just short of making the LOC board for at least a little while, it was 24 lb 14 oz on the derby scale and 20th place was 25 lb 3 oz. riggers were fairly quiet today, junk lines took most of the fish, both of the wire divers (240 and 160 on a 2 setting) and the 400' copper took a bunch of hits. first hing in the morning as we were setting lines Adam had a nice coho smash the mountain dew SD green crinkle howie as he was lowering the rigger. That was the only bite that combo took today, the Nuke green SD glow blue hammer Atommik set at 70 feet took several hits. The 240 wire with green/dbl crush glow opti inticer/green krinkle Atommik took a lot of bites today. the 160 diver with a blue dolphin stingray really lit up in the early afternoon once we moved inside. Fleas were horrendous today, they were bad offshore, but were manageable, the stuff inside was absolutely horrible. It seemed more like cottonwood fluff and was clogging up everything including the wire divers. It wouldn't slide on any type of line and even collected very badly on the 30 lb big game I splice onto my rigger rods for just that reason and which has always worked great before. I ended up hand over handing in the 25 lb king the last 20 feet because I just couldn't reel anymore. Adam with a nice teenage king and with a nice coho and where have we seen THIS before I realized afterwards that in our haste to get in to the weigh station, neither Adam or I took a pic of the big guy (gal... it was a female) .... oops Tim

Sandy Creek 7/2
Tim Bromund replied to FISHINMAN's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Tom, what kind of rigger weights are you using? I let my scottys pretty much free fall when I set them and have never had them tangle. I have 15 lb shark on one and a 13 lb Atommik torpedo on the other. I have em 30 or 45 deg off each corner without the booms extended. 8' beam on the Thompson. Tim -
Salmon fishing
Tim Bromund replied to walleyejack's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Yes, I keep my boat at Olcott, NY, but I have quite a few Canadian Friends over on your side of the pond and have fished some of the Scotty Tournaments in the past. Tim -

Catch and release tactics?
Tim Bromund replied to FLO1919's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Glen, I caught a CRAA tagged steelie probably 6 or 7 years ago, they are easily seen, yellow tags (If I recall correctly) near the dorsal fin, tag was about 3" long. Mine was a wild credit river male that had just completed it's second spawning (yeah, unfortunately it was boxed ) Tim -
Jim, That may all be true, but what the heck does any of that have to do with the topic of this thread? Just askin' Tim
