  1. Kevin, I just like having the 20 lb fluoro leader for spoons. doesn't really matter with flasher/flies. I have the spool filled with 300+ yds of 17 trilene xt before I put on the 100-120 ft of 30 lb big game. Those spools looked like they were getting pretty low with some of the screamers we had on saturday, so it was nice to have plenty of the smaller diameter line on the reel behind the 30. Tim
  2. I just splice in 100 feet of 30 lb big game onto my rigger rods, then a small #8 spro power swivel and 20 lb fluoro leader. Never have flea problems and it doesn't twist up like FF is prone to. The 30 lb runs between the rod and the rigger release (we're lucky on the west end as we selcom have to run the riggers deeper than 100 feet to get into fish. On the east end you may have to go t0 150 feet of 30. Tim
  3. No, ethanol is a real issue. Here's some info from the Boat US Website on it and how it affects boaters: http://www.boatus.com/seaworthy/ethanol.asp Tim
  4. Hi Chad, no didn't really have to, we couldn't keep the rods in the water as it was today. Tim
  5. Another super day out of Olcott. Just Dad and I today so 4 rods in the water, 2 riggers and 2 divers and today that was plenty. fished from 0600-1400 hrs (6:00 am to 2:00 pm) started out heading East of harbor set up in front of the microwave in 60-120 fow. Saw Bob Fishlock in there and worked it for a while, picked up 3 dinks and decided to head north. We got out to 200 fow and headed towards our waypoints from last week. Got about a mile from them and rods started firing. We spent most of the rest of the day with fish on. 200-350 fow, straight out and slightly east of harbor. I lost count at some point but we were over 30 bites for the day and at least 15 or 16 boated (dropsies again today, not sure why, checked hooks and were sticky sharp) with 4 doubleheaders (thank god for autopilot ). 3 matures, 1 nice fat brown trout several steelhead and lots of shakers (2 more wild ones today). We had 1 little skip that couldn't have been more than 8 or 9 inches, clipped adipose, had to be this springs plant. Early on it was spoons with a blue dolphin stinger stingray on the 60' rigger taking several hits. As the morning wore on it moved to a spinny/fly bite in a major way. With the overcast conditions, mouintain dew spin doctor w/ green crinkle howie fly was on fire, took 12 or 13 hits on the 80' rigger. With the action the mountain dew was getting I put down the nuclear green spin doctor w/ glow blue hammer Atommik on the 70' rigger and it started firing regularly as well. Light Green double crush glow spin doctor w/ B-fly Atommik on the deep diver (back 240 on a 2 setting) took a couple hits, including a major screamer that took dipsy leader and SD/Fly when the wire jammed up on the spool. (I put fresh wire on both diver rods over winter and this was the first time I had both in the water this season. This was the first time the second wire diver rod had left the cabin and I forgot to let it out and reel in under pressure to make sure the wire was spooled tight ) I let it all out, reeled it back in tight and put it back out with a green double crush Opti Inticer and green crinkle Atommik and it wasn't out 2 minutes before it fired with the brown trout. Not sure what he was doing 80 or so down in 260 fow, not normal BT territory) Shallow diver (160 on a 2 ) with a dalmation R&R superlight took multiple hits with steelies and immature kings. It was a good day to have a boat with a roof as it was raining on and off for a good part of the day. Really seemed to have the fish active though. A few pics; hmmmm as Ted Nugent would say: " Now where have we seen THIS before" Dad with a Mature about 22 lbs Me with a 21 lb Dad with another that bounced between 19.5 and 21 on the boat scale Let's hope these fish stay put for the summer. Tim
  6. Back when I was running cut bait regularly when the Ryes Davies (sp?) cut bait was available, we found that you selected leader length based on if you wanted numbers or size. If you just wanted to catch fish, then 4-5 foot leaders worked fine, if you wanted to target less numbers but big kings, we stretched the leader back to 6 feet, sometimes a bit more. That was behind the big 11" paddles (hot spots or oki big shooters) or 13" fish shaped flashers. When we ran meat it was usually for big guys, we all found that less is more and we ran a minimal spread usually just 2 riggers, minimum of 15' separation between the rigger depths and leads between 20 and 30 feet. We seldom ran dipsies or junk lines , just the 2 riggers with meat, it seemed like the more you had in the water, the less you caught. Many days in august when the meat bite was on, 2 rods was all you needed. With the arrival of VHS and the relative unavailiability of meat and the advent of spinnies and flies, I seldom ever run meat anymore, though I have had some good luck with the familiar bite whole alewifes when I've run it. 7. THat was the case with the original accudepth reels, the drags on those were junk and they were quickly discontinued. It is NOT the case with the Accudepth plus. They have the same drags as the Sealines and same internals except for bushings instead of bearings and they are in a less costly graphite frame. I've had 4 of them that have been servind as my power pro and mono diver reels for 3 years now and they are fine as diver reels. I wouldn't hesitate to use them for wires if I needed wire diver reels. I have 2 SG 47 LCA's for wires that are 7 or 8 years old and still work like they were brand new. Just put my 3rd round of fresh wire on them this spring. Tim
  8. I think we'd all be thrilled to death if they were right 50% of the time. Tim
  9. When I set the gps to navigate to the waypoint at the pierheads on saturday, we were in 275 fow and the distance to next on the gps was 4.2 miles ans I was a bit west of port at that point, so I would say that 300 fow is less than 5 miles offshore right at Olcott. Tim
  10. Nice, glad your first trip out to Olcott was a successful one. Tim
  11. The doghouse on my Thompson makes a nice tackle station. I don't think it gets in the way at all, I personally find outboards much more inconvenient to work around. Tim
  12. After taking the last three weeks off, based on some of the reports this week, we gave it a shot this morning. Got to the marina at 0600 and had rods in the water around 0630. Steady action all morning, ended up 8/16 when the lake started to get snotty and we pulled lines at 0900. Had a bad case of the dropsies this morning. Kings, cohos and steelhead. Slightly West to straight out in front of harbor in 200-300 fow, North/South trolls. All rigs were working and all 6 rods in the spread took fish today (gotta love when that happens). Deep rigger at 95 with a green double crush glow spinny and green and chart Atommik fly (sorry, don't remember the pattern off the top of my head) went a couple times. Shallow rigger at 70 with a gator SS on the main line and NBK SS on the free slider went a bunch of times, both on the main spoon and the slider (a lot of our drops were on this rod, probably slider bites). Wire diver with green dolphin protroll and matching Atommik fly at 180 on a 2 fired twice (one was a hit and run not counted in the bite total above). Power Pro Diver at 165 on a 1.5 went once with a nuclear green spinny and blue glow hammer Atommik. 200' copper took a nice coho on 6" red double crush spinny and green/blue/silver peanut/coho type fly (homemade). 400' copper with green double crush glow Opti Inticer and green Krinkle Atommik took a nice 9+ lb steelie. Doubled up 9+ lb steelie Some of the evidence of the piscatorial bedlam that ensued this morning 5 shaker kings caught and released, 4 clipped 1 wild. 16 bites in 2.5 hrs, great start to the summer fishing at Olcott, Hope it lasts all season. Tim
  13. Launch Ramp is in the Town of Newfane Marina in Olcott. It is on the west side of the creek at the east end of West Main Street. Basically, turn North on Jackson St at the Boat Doctors and your first right will take you to the Marina. I'll be out in the morning. I keep my boat slipped in Olcott. Reports have been lots of fish from Olcott to west of Wilson in 100-250 fow, 60-100 feet down. Flashers and flies seem to be working better than spoons, so that'll be my plan of attack. I haven't been out in 3 weeks, so we'll be in search mode as well. We'll be at the boat at 0600 and should be on the water with lines in by 0630. Feel free to give me a shout on channel 10, Boat name is FishStyx. Tim
  14. Are they solid black or taped. I've had great luck for many years now with spooks (glow ladder back tape) and lazer spooks (glow and silver lazer ladderback tapes offset) both NK and pirate, and I think just about all of them have white backs. The good old fashioned NK28 black and purple that has been slaying kings since the 80's (black blade with diagonal purple scallop tape) has a white back as well and it still takes a lot of fish. Tim
  15. fish heads fish heads roly poly fish heads, fish heads fish heads eat them up.. Yummmmmm Tim
  16. Mark you can replace the stock rod holders with these they replace the stock holders in the scotty bases and are adjustable, both vertically and horizontally. I like my rigger rods as flat as I can get them and the fixed rod holders were my only beef with the scottys as well. I got the replacements from http://www.fishusa.com these are the stock holders on the 1117 pro packs. http://www.fishusa.com/Scotty-Model-346 ... der_p.html Since I seldom stack, I just replaced one of the holders on each of my riggers. Tim
  17. Wow, just looking at the Niagara Open division results, 2 teams were dq'd. Waddaya gotta do to get disqualified in the open division? Did they show up after 12:00 for the weigh in? Just curious. Tim
  18. if you say so. Definitely a nice chromer steelie though Tim
  19. fdny, just as a "by the way" kind of comment, the first pic is a steelhead. Tim
  20. Brian middle of the page, right hand side in the "Important Information" box, Tournament Rules is the 3rd item down. http://lopacup.com/wordpress/ http://lopacup.com/wordpress/?page_id=327 Tim
  21. Remember that Raymarine was just recently purchased out of bankruptcy, so IMO, it may be difficult to get anywhere with them at the moment. Tim
  22. I've often wondered the same thing. Olcott and Wilson Harbors are typically loaded with perch from October through May, Those fish have gotta be out in the lake somewhere when they leave the harbors. Tim
  23. On the North Shore, once the lake sets up, the first place it really gets hot is the Darlington/Oshawa/Whitby area. The fishing in that area should fire up in the next couple weeks. Tim
  24. Thanks guys, much appreciated. Tim
