  1. well, I would say that there is something wrong with either your individual unit or the map card. Garmin is almost universally regarded and accepted as the leader in GPS systems and technology. I have a Garmin 172C on my boat and mine is so dead on that, for instance, when I'm sitting in my slip in the marina, it shows me sitting in my slip in the marina. when I'm going out through the piers, it shows me going out through the piers, etc. My sonar and the depth contours on the chart plotter are always right there. I have the garmin blue chip map card installed in mine for Lake Ontario which coveres from the area from Montreal on the SLR to Long Point on Lake Erie. Don't shy away from another Garmin if your's is screwed up, they make great equipment. Tim
  2. FHF, sorry man, but you're wrong, that is absolutely an atlantic, no question about it. The small head and shape and form of it's skinny mouth are atlantic salmon all day long. Tim
  3. On Thursday June 10th at 7pm the Lake Ontario Trout & Salmon Association (LOTSA) will be sponsoring a Seminar on Walleye fishing from the Buffalo Harbor. Captain Joe Fonzi who has many successful years fishing walleye in this area will be giving the seminar and answering the questions. The experiences of LOTSA members in the recently completed Niagara Pro Am will also be presented LOTSA is a group of mainly weekend recreational fishermen who are dedicated to the enhancement of the Lake Ontario Sport-Fishery including the pen rearing project at Olcott. Each meeting also features a sharing of information the current fishing conditions. So come join us and become more successful at fishing Lake Ontario! The meeting will be held at the Cornell Cooperative Extension, 4487 Lake Avenue (Route 78 two miles north of Lockport), Lockport, NY 14094. The Seminar is free and open to the Public. See WWW.LOTSA.ORG for any questions.
  4. If it is undersize, you have to release it, no matter what. Kinda sucks but that's your only option. Look at it this way, the fish has a better chance of surviving back in the lake than it does in your cooler Tim
  5. Sure it does. pull the lever back and let it drop. I can have my scotty riggers deployed, the rod in the holder and slack snugged up in about 20 seconds. There's not a rigger on the market that can be reset as fast as a scotty IMO. Tim
  6. In a normal year I agree on June, but I strongly disagree about July, the king fishing is very consistent out of Olcott all summer long. Last year in particular, the king fishing in July was absolutely out of this world. The only time it's tough to find em is after a strong NE blow causes an upwelling and we have ice water inshore, then you gotta go offshore and search, but once the lake stabilizes, the kings are right back in their normal areas again. In a normal year, the lake is set up and the summer fishing starts right around the 4th of July. This year the lake is a couple weeks ahead of schedule, so we may have a thermocline set up and the start of summer fishing by the 3rd week of June. Tim
  7. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: Tim Bromund / FishStyx ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 5-30-10 Time on Water: 0600-1330 Weather/Temp: sunny and calm Wind Speed/Direction:w/nw 10 mph or less Waves: <1' Surface Temp: 67-68 Location: Olcott to the Niagara Bar LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 4 Total Boated: 3 Species Breakdown: coho Hot Lure: red mini spindoctor/penut fly Trolling Speed: Down Speed: 2.2-2.4 Boat Depth: Lure Depth: ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Started in front of the red barn and nothing happening, so we picked up and ran to the bar. 3 fish landed out of 4 bites, all coho. we had 2 bites on a red mini spin doc and blue/green peanut/coho fly on the 5 color lead core, 1 on a mono diver 90 back on a 3 setting, same lure and 1 on a mountain dew spin doc, green krinkle howie fly on the 100' rigger. The fish we lost was on the 5 color and was significantly larger than the 3 to 5 lb coho we got in, it dropped off with about 2 clors of core still out. they way it was fighting, I think it mayt have been an atlantic, but we didn't see it clearly enough to identify. Tough day out there and a long run from Olcott and back for 3 small ho's but at least we didn't get skunked today Looks like we are already well into the normal June transition. We had 67 deg on the surface and 42 deg down 130. Lets hope the lake sets up soon so the summer fishing can start. Tim
  8. the "Red Barn" as salmonboy actually has right above (amazingly enough. No offense to salmonboy41, but most of what he posts is utter nonsense and/or bad information), is just that, a large reg barn with a white roof, about 1.5-2 miles west of Olcott harbor that is visible from the water. The "microwave" is the microwave/radio type transmission tower approx 1 mile to the east of Olcott Harbor, you can clearly see the tower from the water. The plant he is referring to is the Somerset Power Plant, approx 8 or so miles down the lake (big smoke stack). They are just the major, visible landmarks that people reference when fishing out ot Olcott. Tim
  9. In a normal year the lake is set up (stratified) by the 4th of July and the summer fishing kicks off. It seems a couple weeks ahead of schedule this year so the lake may be set up and the summer fishing started by the 3rd week in June. You can catch kings all summer long in 60-200 fow most years. You can spend the entire summer fishing between the red barn and the microwave in 60- 200 feet and catch as many kings as you want, igf you move into 30-40 fow you can catch some nice browns as well. The only reason to go 15 miles out in July is if you want to chase steelhead. The only time you'd have to run offshore to chase kings is if we get a lot of NE winds and upwellings screwing up the water column. This year it looks like the june transition has started already. The kings scatter because you have good water temps from top to bottom, one end of the lake to the other. They could be 40 down over 60 for or they could just as easily be 400 feet down over 500 fow. Once the lake water stratifies and the termocline sets up, then you have distinct temperature bands (thermal structure) ahe their locations become somewhat predictable again. Tim
  10. Mickey Finn, That was 1999, the winner and top 10 kings were all over 40, 20th place was 38lb 4 oz (I believe) Big steelies that year also, If I recall correctly top 10 were all over 20 and 20th place was 18. Tim
  11. That just got raised from $40.00 to $70.00 this past license year. It had been a long time since the previous license fee increase. From what I've seen, I don't think it's particularly out of line with other State/Canadian Province's non resident licenses. Tim
  12. Probably DID have gps. My guess is they had the autopilot navigating to a waypoint on the gps and in the haevy fog, didn't realize the angle they were approaching tha harbor and didn't see the pier until it was too late. If that's what happened, I think it was doubly irresponsible to be running on AP in the fog, but that was just a guess on my part. Could be they were just following the heading on the gps to the harbor. Still should have seen the location of the piers on the chart on the gps though. I agree, no excuse for going fast enough in the fog for this kind of accident to happen, EVER. Tim
  13. Well, I guess that answers that question.
  14. Iceman Are you ever NOT a tool??? Just curious. Tim
  15. LMAO! Thanks for the contribution to the discussion. Very insightful comments and icons... well, I suppose if you're gonna take it upon yourself be an internet tight-a$$, you're gonna get that sort of response from time to time. In the immortal words of Sgt Hulka: Lighten up Francis!!! Tim
  16. Mike, from what I've seen, the kings seem to show up around Darlington right around the end of June. Tim
  17. yes, most of the big marks we saw on the graph were belly to the bottom. there were plenty og marks up high too that we figured were coho, but couldn't get em to go. Tim
  18. If those are Accudepth Plus reels they'll work just fine. The original Accudepth reels were junk and Daiwa scrapped them after only a couple years, but the ADP's are essentially the same reels as the Sealines in a graphite frame instead of aluminum. Same drags etc. I have 4 of the ADP47LC's doing duty as my braid and mono diver reels and they work great in those applications, they'll work just as well for wire.. other than that Gambler's advise is dead on. Tim
  19. nope the pay every day derby is a $100 per person entry http://www.payeverydayderby.com/ the LOC boat derby is $300/boat for non charters and $600/boat for charters and coveers everyone in the boat http://www.loc.org/index.asp Tim
  20. Coho always lose scales like crazy, kings do in the spring as well especially immature fish, not so much once you get into summer. I saw your boat there at the marina and thought I recognized the name. Tim
  21. finally dropped the boat in saturday and everything went fine on the shakedown, so we went fishing sunday morning. Great picture from the harbor west in 50-90 fow, nice green water and 52 deg on the surface with lots of hooks on the graph, but the fish seemed to have lockjaw. Very slow for most boats. We ended up 2/4 with a 5 lb king (adipose clipped) and a mature just under 21 lbs landed. All 4 bites today were spoons on riggers. The small king took an R&R magenta shad down 45 in 85 fow and the mature took the good old standard NK28 black and purple down 75 in 80 fow. No action on the divers, 5 color core or the 200' copper. great to be back in the water and looking forward to the fishing season. Tim
  22. nice toothy critter Tim
  23. Yes I am hesitant to change the prop for that very reason. What size boat do you have for the 2 28" bags? I was thinking I need 2 22" bags for my 22 footer. 24' Thompson, 230 HP 305 Merc Alpha 1. I usually only have 1 bag out when trolling, mostly so I can kick the rpms up a bit and get better speed control, but in really snotty lake conditons I'll put em both out to smooth out the ride. Tim
  24. It IS Wrong on several levels, 1) the parks that are being closed make money for the state, it makes no sense to close ethem; 2) There are people living on the Island/Spit on the Lake side of Wilson Tuscarora Bay for which the park is their ONLY access to their homes; 3) it is the only launch ramp in Wilson. The town of Wilson is going to take a tremendous beating financially if all of those people who can no longer launch at WTSP seek ameneties elsewhere; 4) it's just plain wrong PERIOD!! You wanna save some money, shut down the handouts and entitlements to the non producers in this freaking state. This doesn't affect me personally, my boat is already sitting in it's slip at Olcott, but right is right. Tim
