I am asking this for a friend who has 1988 4cyl 170 hp merc i/o. The problem is that his boat as it gets up on a plane and winding up to full speed, the engine starts to chug like it is starving for fuel. The engine runs fine at idle. He had the fuel filters replaced (one looked like it had been dented by vaccumm pressure). This did not do anything to help in the problem. The marina he has it at is giving him the old Hey lets try this $300 idea, oh that didn't work lets try this $300 idea. If someone else has had this problem let me know and I will relay the information, to have him give that a try. I can not get to the boat to do my own trouble shooting, but from what he is telling me sounds like a fuel issue. Is there a screen on the pump in the tank?

fishiman, great report. Carl is a great guy and I had to laugh at your comment about busting your chops for "ethically releasing" fish. I went out with him once and one of the girls landed our first fish which was a nice big laker. I netted it and got the hook out. Carl reset the rod. I grabbed the fish and released it not thinking, we never took pictures and the fact this fish was her biggest of lifetime. OOOPPPPPSSS. Carl rag on me the rest of the trip for that one. You never have a dull moment with him, either busy reeling or joking around, makes 8 hours feel like 10 minutes. -
Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: reel awakening ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):5/1-5/2 Time on Water:18 hours Weather/Temp: Wind Speed/Direction: Waves: Surface Temp: Location: LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 23 Total Boated:18 Species Breakdown:Kings & Cohos Hot Lure: Blue Jackle Fly Trolling Speed: 2.6 Down Speed: Boat Depth: 100 fow Lure Depth: Had a great weekend out of Wilson. We went 13-14 on Saturday mix bag of Coho's and Kings (should of been 14-14, but while handling a triple had to tell the guy that we can not hoist a 6lb using just the rod with 8# test). Boated 6 kings all were 18lbs +/- 1/2 lb. The only lure the fired more than once was the Moonshine Blue Jackle Fly that took 4 of the kings. Head back out on Sunday for a little more of the same. We did not refuel on saturday (no place is open after 8pm). SO we decided to head out and fish around wilson. We ended today 5 for 9 with 3 kings about the same size. Lost a big king, hit, yep you guessed it the blue jackle fly. The rod hit the back of the boat and the reel started to scream. Grabed the rod and he was still on the run, after 300 ft blast nothing he was off. Never had a hook come out while they were on the run. Then another 3 cohos hit, jumped, danced on the top of the water, and then throw the hook. Great weekend to be out. Other lures were, NBK, Moonshine (7 different colors) Lazer spook. Every color on the rainbow for stick baits. ====================

30 yrs of stuff.............
poverty stricken II replied to ray koziatek's topic in Classifieds - Buy, Sell, Trade or Rent
Ray, I am hoping that your wife is around when we ask for prices. She will never let you sell a rod and reel combo for more than $10 because that would be $8 more than you told her you paid for it. Hey guy's I am thinking this may work for us. Black mail for lower prices ha ha ha... Ummm I am glad I am not selling anything lol. -

Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 4/17 Time on Water: 2.5 hours Weather/Temp:Wind Rain and snow 36* Wind Speed/Direction: 25+ mph Waves: 4-6 Surface Temp: 46 Location: 2 miles west of jetties LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 1 Total Boated: 1 Species Breakdown: Brown Hot Lure: Green/silver Storm TStick Trolling Speed: Down Speed: Boat Depth: 12ft Lure Depth: ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== We decided to go to the Oak Friday night so we could get some sleep verses leaving the house at 2am to get there by light. Planned on getting there at 10pm to Captains Cove. Well that changed about 10 miles from the Point Breeze Exit when one of the trailer tires blew. We decided to head to the closest super Walmart to get a new tire and beg the manager to put a tire on for us. Found the closet Walmart in Irondiquiit. When we got there all the associates were telling us that they closed in 10 minutes and no one could help us. We talked to the manager Bob and he agreed to get us a tire however he would not install it. So after 20 minutes in Walmart parking lot we got the tire on and went to get air. Tire beaded up great however the Valve stem he gave us was the wrong one and leaked bad. We were able to slow the leak to a slow bubble. Grabbed a can of fix a flat and headed 30 miles back to the boat. Got it changed and went to bed at 12:30. After a rough night and thinking the tire was going to be flat we grabbed the boat and headed to the lauch to our surprize the tire was still fully inflated.. We launch knowing it was windy (15 MPH) and only going to get worse. We set lines out the shoot and headed west. After about an hour the wind was picking up and we decided to turn around and head back to the dock. Made the turn and the port side out rigger snap out FISH ON first of the year. My brother grabbed the rod and landed a 6lb brown. We got the break walls and started pulling rods and the weather turned from bad to worse. The wind picked up gusting to well near 30+mph, started to rain sleet and snow. Load it on the trailed and headed for breakfast. Overall it was an ok shake down. Went 1-1 and no issues on the boat. Looking forward for the 2010 season.

Boarderline, I think it is a 2.3 4 cyl mercruiser other than that I have no clue. I do not know this person personally. He has a vehicle that he does not use with a 2.3 4 cyl. I told him I would check on here because I knew there are several people on here that are great in this field.

Jason, I don't know the guy's name. However he did several people from Mansfield PA to Rochester. One of the biggest reasons why it ticks me off is that, this person I spoke to bought this boat last year for his wife and 4 kids to start boating and fishing. He works as a mechanic for a local taxi company (we all know they don't make crap). He paid $4800 for the boat and now has a cracked block with an estimate for $4200 for the new motor.
-
I spoke to a guy who is in a crappy spot in his boating life. He like many others in the southern tier fell for an add craigs list regarding a mobile marine mechanic that winterizes boats. This SOB took $140 from each of his victims. All he did was fogged out thier engines and never drained the blocks or put antifreeze in the motor. Here is the question, Can he/they use an engine block out of a truck? I would assume blocks would be the same, but I was not sure. Has anyone done this before? Any ideas that I can relay to him (other than shot gun therapy). The SOB moved to Florida and he would have to go to the county in which this SOB live to file a law suit.

Gambler, I was looking to try something different. I have heard of people who used these and done well but I do not know anyone personally who has used them. I figured when the bite slows down try fishing for lakers..

Anyone got any ideas where to get the 7 strand wire that is used for dipsy's. I have gone to bass pro but that $50 price tag scares me away. Anyone know where to get this wire under $30

Just wondering if someone could give me some tips regarding using cowbells. What size blades are the best producers? Has anyone ever tried running them with an Echip cut bait rig behind it? Thanks Tim

Anybody ever see or use these spoons?
poverty stricken II replied to FISHINMAN's topic in Tackle Description
My wife sells stuff on ebay and the small flat rate shipping box (mind the post office gives you the box for free) is $4.80 for up to 4 lbs. So my calculations for the shipping prices you should be able to get 256 1/4oz spoons . Heck, they should advertise free spoons just pay $10 shipping and handling... -
hey wait a second, according to the equal distribution of wealth, some one needs to send me one because I cant afford it. Never mind, I don't want because I would be assesed a lure tax from patterson. Oh well hopefully, we can get Obama and Patterson to extend the unemployment to 200 weeks rather than the 99 weeks thay have already passed. More fishing time. There is fine print on the Obama lure saying, we know it doesn't catch fish and it will scare fish from taking your other baits, however if you do not use this you will be fined $200 per day.

Ray, you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

replacing the hitch/brake cylinder
poverty stricken II replied to poverty stricken II's topic in This Old Boat
Splitshot thanks for the link. Outbound, I have thought about the fluid being out (which I am assuming that is it is). The brake system has never been checked or serviced since new, 25 years ago. The tab on the top is broken off (emergency brake), thinking that the hook was forgoten that it was attached to the truck when someone pulled away. I am thinking that a complete system replace would be the best bet over trying to deal with 25 years of wear and tear.
