Kings hate them , try to rip them off the line. When in a small boat , 6' lead off the ball when its kinda rough works great. I am not sure if we were trolling them or jigging them, but we hooked up alot with them.
Had a nice time fishing with Jim Duncan (Livewire) taking Dave from R&R spoons out for some R&R and some R&D Caught a bunch of nice lakers 4 to 6# and a 5#+ Land lock. Fished from the boy scout camp North to shelldrake in 70' to 200' The fish were all depths. 60' off the dipsie, 100' and 80' off the riggers. The new metal 9" flasher with a smaller spoon. And the 6" flasher with a 3' lead to the spoon worked great. The finish and the paint jobs on the flashers is nothing short of Amazing . The uv blue coating really fires up when the flasher hits the water. The Kings on Lake Ontario will love thest babies with a hot fly behind them!!!! Dave was taking a break from painting and wanted to try some new flashers out. The landlock wacked the 6" bright orange flasher and the green/yellow spoon . 65'down on the rigger. Speed was 2.2 to 2.8 The new flashers are metal and you can tweak the way the run by bending the back or the front of it. They are reversable and will run either way for a slightly differant look They will be up on his website soon!!! mytacklebox.com Oh like Tim B. said he is starting to paint the sea sick wadder pattern in reg and mag sizes.
Are you sure its the drag and not the spool slipping on the mainshaft? Wire and braid will sometimes break the epoxie that holds the spool to the mainshaft.
If the release is hooked to the tail of the weight , it will steer the weight into trouble!!!! If your fishing off 9mile the deep currents are wicked at times.
Sounds like the bearings for the spool are dry and need to be lubercated. I would take it to a Cannon service shop and have them check it. That rigger should be under warranty.
Its not how accurate they are its the repeatability . You learn where the dipsie is running and use that to guesstamate where they are. I know that the counters are just that they don't compensate for how much line is on the spool they count revolations, just like the counter on your riggers. If you are hitting fish with 220' of wire out with a #1 dipsie on a #3 setting . Put it back to the 220
We fished the East side Wed. Got a bunch of laker pups the biggest was maybe 5# White green dot flasher with green fly and anR&R spoon Greenish with glow ladder back. Those two were the ticket , deep 80 to 100' down. Nothing on the high lines.
It makes a King real grumpy to have that yellow board wacking him upside the head when it slides all the way down Don't ask me how I know I now use the clamp type offshore release on the board and the or16 with the peg on the back. Makes Mr. King and me much happier
Like the others have said don't hook the release to the hole in the tailfin on the weight. The preload on the rod pulls the tail over and tries to steer the weight. The Blacks I have the clip run through the release and clips to the main eye on the weight. That way the weight can track tru and move with the boat turns and currents.
