Best marine sealant for thru hull txducer?
landingzone replied to landingzone's topic in This Old Boat
Wow! Thanks Mudflat. That video is excellent. It gives several good suggestions and they are installing the exact same transducer that I will be. -
What is the best marine sealant for a thru hull transducer? I'm installing one on my 270AJ and I don't want any leaks! Any other install advice is welcome also. Thanks, Dick

Thanks for all the info guys. I found a local taxidermist that is going to do it for a reasonable price. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Anyone have any experience with the preparation of a whitetail skull/antlers to make a European mount? I read about all the boiling, picking, scraping, etc. and it sounds like a big job. Also, some folks suggest hanging it on a fencepost for a year. Others, say bury it for (?) months. Has anyone tried the "bury it" method and do you bury the whole thing or do you leave the antlers sticking out? Can it be done professionally, locally, for a reasonable cost? Thanks, Dick

wish I could see it from a little farther away!

Can you explain how you are removing the pin bones? Thanks, Dick

Has anyone had their boat waxed by a service and been particularly happy with the results? Looking for someone in the Webster/Ontario area.

Fast fishing out of Wilson today. Fished 8:30-1:30 and went 12/13 with a mixed bag of kings, steelhead, & 1 Atlantic. Mostly steelhead, down 50-90/300.... about 55-57W lines. 11 on spoons (NBK, blue dolphin, wonderbread), one 8# steelhead on a CB***h spinny/CB***h fly out 270. Couple of the kings were decent.

Twin 4.3L V6's adequate on 270AJ?
landingzone replied to landingzone's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Thanks guys, Sounds like it would be fine. -
I'm going to look at a 1988 27ft. Sea Ray Amberjack. The boat looks to be in good shape (from the pics) and there are only 800 hrs. on the engines. The engines are 4.3L GM/Mercruiser & Mercruiser I/O outdrives. I would be using the boat for salmon fishing loaded with 4 downriggers and lots of equipment, as well as up to 5 people on board. My main concern is whether these engines are sufficient to get the boat out of the water without laboring. I don't need a rocket and 25 mph cruise is fine but I don't want it severely underpowered also. Most hours on the boat would be spent trolling on one engine and then use both to go to & return from fishing areas up to 10 miles from port. I'd appreciate any thoughts/experience. Thanks

Two units are fine as long as they are not the same frequency. I routinely run one on 50 kHz and another on 200kHz. Dick

Had a good time prefishing on Thu./Fri. for the Niagara Pro-Am. Thu. with a late start and only a crew of 2 we fished off the red can and took an atlantic and a coho & then worked deeper water (300') off 4 mile and took a nice coho, had good marks & punched in the waypoint. Fri. with full crew, started early & went to the red can at 6:00AM. Took a couple small fish and then couldn't hook up in the building crowd, so we left for our 300' waypoint from Thu. Found the marks again and eventually boated a brown, 3 kings 15-20#, 2 coho, and a nice steelhead. With 15 hits total for the day, we were happy! Went back to same waypoint Sat. morning (Tournament Day 1). Started marking fish right away. 20 min. after start one dipsy fired with a chrome green dot SD/Hammer fly and after a lengthy fight in building seas, we boated a 24.3# king. Great start ...... however, the rest of the day only produced 3 more shakers. Then.... Day 2 was a blowoff .... oh well! It was still fun! Dick

Got a late start Wed. and went directly to the red can about 9:30. A few fish on the screen in 125-175 but not much. Managed a small king and a couple nice coho for the day mid afternoon. Thurs, got an early start and looked in 140 fow off Wilson. Beautiful screen from top to bottom at 6:00. Had a little trouble getting hits but managed a couple nice coho (5-6#) and then the screen dried up about 8:30. Went to the red can and set up around 9:00. Fish all over the screen in 125-200 fow! Over the next few hrs., hooked several more coho and a small atlantic. No kings could be had. A first for me was taking fish on mostly blue lures. We took two coho on free sliders... one on a NK28 silver cup and all blue sparkle top, and one on Yeck with white cup and all blue top. Most of the other fish came on SD/fly combos off the divers. Where are the kings? Dick

I've been running the Moor Sub Troll for about 3 yrs. and it works great. Right from the beginning the speed reading has been low compared to GPS readings. I'm talking in general, not as a function of directional currents. This is not a big issue because I just learn what "Moor speed" is working and go from there. I know another boat that has similar readings. As an example, the Moor will read about 2.0 mph when the GPS reads about 2.6 mph. Have other folks had similar experience? If so, have you calibrated the Moor to the GPS? Dick

How is the Irondequoit public launch?
landingzone replied to landingzone's topic in Open Lake Discussion
You're right W.W.IV. I just looked at the Rt 14 (Sodus) launch tonight and it's pretty bad right now. Guess I'll cross the river and launch in the Genny. Dick -
Just wondering with all the shallow water, where the best place on the east side to launch for a shakedown trip. Another option might be Sodus at Margaretta(sp) Rd. What have folks been finding? Thanks, Dick
