re. license What I usually do, is get it at the Canadian Tire as you enter St. Catharines on the QEW right after you cross the Welland. http://www.mapquest.com/maps?name=Canadian+Tire&city=St+Catharines&state=ON&address=459+Welland+Ave&zipcode=L2M+5V2&country=CA&latitude=43.17386&longitude=-79.21754&geocode=ADDRESS&id=24971260

Hookedup, I have trailered my 245 Genmar Sportcabin to the spring Scotty for the last 4 years. There is no particular problem crossing the border. I always have the registration and the title with me but haven't needed it. I have also left the boat there for a few weeks on one occasion. If you leave it there, you need to fill out a special form with Canadian customs and then show it to them when you return. If you are just going in with it and returning with it at the end of your trip, there should be no problem. Dick

Jeff, Where are you placing the dive bomb along your copper? Dick

Fished for perch this afternoon off Skippers near the south east corner of Eagle Is. Action was pretty slow. Caught a bunch of dinks and a couple nice keepers after 4:00.

I think the best repair facility locally is Watercraft Clinic in Wolcott. A few years ago, I had Clint replace stringers on a 31' Baha and they did an excellent job. Just this fall I had them replace the floor on my 245 Lund Genmar Sport Cabin. Again, a nice quality job. Their Phone number is: 315-754-0050

Just one caution about these boxes... I've been using then for a few years now and have three from three different manufacturers. Actually, only the separators are different, the boxes are all Plano. The thing to observe is the width of the slots where the flasher sets. Some are marginally too narrow and over time will slide the attractor tape on the flasher or bunch it up, especially in the hot sun. You might have to widen the slots a little depending on which ones you get. I have one set up with Pro Trolls, one with Bechtolds, and couple with Spin Docs. They do help a lot.

Back to the original question about line weight... I think you will find that the 30# has a slower sink rate and therefore won't go as deep for the same amount of line out. Many times spring browns are taken off long lines on top, or off the boards and these would be the concern. Some guys splice in a long (200') length of lighter line at the end of their 30# and then remove it later in the season. Of course, off the rigger, sink rate is not an issue and a short leader off the 30# is an OK way to go.

Hank & Guy, The Furuno I have is a FCV582 and it does work pretty good. I bought a new transducer after I bought the unit on eBay about 3 yrs. ago. I just think I don't see as many fish as others at times. I usually like to use 50 hz because of the larger cone, ... but it seems to mark better on 200hz. Kevin, I certainly am interested in the FCV 585 especially with all the recommendations here. But if I were to look into the Raymarine units, what specific model numbers should I look at for comparison? ....or should I wait for new units coming out? Dick

OK, here we go with the age old question that has been asked many times in the past. I plan to buy a new unit and so my question is what would be best to buy today. Price is not the biggest issue. My only requirement is that it is the best at marking fish .... nothing else is important! I have 3 fishfinders on my boat (too many) and although they work, I'm not happy with any one of them. I don't have the model info available right now, but my primary one one is an old Furuno CRT dual freq. color unit. The backup is a Garmin mono color 320 (I think), and the last resort is a Lowrance mono color dual freq. about 10 yrs, old. I have seen some LCD units that look pretty good but I would value the hands on experience of LOU board members. Thanks, Dick

I'm not sure what that reason would be, rail bird. When fishing the Scottys from the Canadian side, you can fish in either Canadian or US waters. Dick

Like PY88 said, no backer needed, just 100ft. wire directly to reel.

After being frustrated the past few times out with minimal king action, this morning we went to the 26 bar off P'ville. Marked a bunch at 60' but couldn't get them to go. Think they were steelhead because 55 deg. started about 80' down. About 8:00 the stbd wire fired at 281' back yielding a frisky 19# king (mountain dew SD & hammer fly). 3 or 4 misfires on the riggers, and then the 75' rigger fires. Beauty of a 27# king took a NK mag blk/sil w/purp glo tape off a SWR. Then the water kicked up big time about 11:00 and lightening bolts were on the way. While pulling lines, the port wire at 250' back went off with a mid sized fish which only came half way in (MDSD again/green tinsel fly). Maybe this is the start of something!

In need of trolling equiptment!
landingzone replied to fosort's topic in Classifieds - Buy, Sell, Trade or Rent
I've got three used 60 deg. Perko flush mount rodholders. I think that is the same as what you want ie. 30 deg. from vertical. I bought them used but they won't work on my boat. They have the rubber caps. I paid $35 for the set. You can have them for the same. If you are interested, e-mail me at: [email protected] Dick Here is a pic: -
What size Spro swivel do I want to join with 45# copper? Thanks, Dick

What connection for copper to backing or leader?
landingzone posted a topic in Tackle and Techniques
I imagine it was discussed here somewhere but I can't find it..... I'm setting up a couple copper rigs and need to know the best connection techniques. I have a spool of Howie copper and it shows using a "Howie" knot. I also have an Atommik spool and it shows an Albright knot. Others have told me to use small Spro swivels. I am using 50# Power Pro for backing and 20# fluorocarbon for leader. If using swivels, how do you knot the copper to them? -
Anyone tried using 300 ft. of 45# copper with various snap weights above the knot on the backing (then let out ?? ft.) in an attempt to gain more depth? Wondering if this could accomplish nearly the same thing as 400-600 ft. of copper. Dick

What a mess!!! At first I thought it didn't affect us much locally, but now I see this TWIC card required for captains later this year. Also it seems like it will be a big issue in the Thousand Island area (bass, pike, walleye) as anglers wander over and back.

I am going to mount a couple flush mount rodholders. Boat surface is aluminum with 3/4" plywood backing. My question is.... The rodholder tube is 2 1/8" and angled 30 deg. off vertical. Any suggestions as to how to cut the oval necessary to fit this? Thanks, Dick

Moor Sub Troll antenna for Scottys
landingzone replied to landingzone's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Shade, I don't know what a the spring antenna on a Cannon unit looks or works like. Below is a pic of the two Moor antennas. If you want one of the Moor types I think you would have to purchase it frrom Moor. Their phone # is 716-821-5304. Dick -
We've probably been through this before but: 1) How much lead core do you typically run on a SWR off a rigger? 2) In addition to the leader to the lure, do you attach a short "leader" on the rod end so that you can put a swivel there? I'm thinking that would allow removal of the lead core to run a clean lure or a different length of lead. I haven't used this set up before so I could use some help. Thanks, Dick
