But after seeing what everyone that hit the lake last season saw, that is not the case on Lady O. We have more bait, in some cases an influx of bait, and need more predators. Going to be curious to see what comes out in the SOTL meetings this year. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

1/7/15 DEC Studying Ongoing Salmon River Steelhead Disorder
Rich D replied to Captain's Cove's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Vince, This has affected fish all over the world, and other lakes in NY. We won't know if how diff it will be affecting wild vs hatchery since they are not clipping all steelies. Some of us believe the state should be clipping all hatchery fish, since we do own the trailer. We also believe the study for kings was not long enough. We need to know the cost to run the trailer, no need to implant chips, unless they want to do a specific study. Like you said last season, a noticeable lack of of our top predators in the lake!!! Lots of questions that need to be answered, and that will not be answered at the SOTL meetings coming up. I will post some links to studies, interesting reading from all over the globe on this. I agree Brian, it sucks we can't trust the people in charge of our fisheries!! Pete, yes the alewives are the problem they say for the lack of spawning for the Atlantics. There is a number of studies online from the USA across the Atlantic researching the effects of Thiaminse. Now it might actually be showing up in our steelheads. We are all in this together, need to stick together, and work toward a solution. Capt Rich DeMong Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Brian, Come on, how long you been listening to them and knowing just the opposite??? My point exactly regarding the fact of whether we will be getting the truth from them!!! Sucks that we have to talk about a situation like this. Time will tell... Capt Rich Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

The vitamin B deficiency is coming from Thimanese, which is carried by the alewives, and now seeing also smelt. With the over abundance of bait this year, and lack of predators, theory is that is the cause. Originally thought only to really affect the young, the more I research, the more I am seeing it can and does affect the adults. Time will tell as what they actually come up with, or what they want to tell us. The State of Lake meetings should be very interesting, and long this year. This has been an ongoing issue all season, we have been seeing the floaters/swirlers since October. There is a few diff opinions on the cause, we are waiting to see the outcome of the latest testing with the live fish. Originally we thought it was just a SR issue, but have since found it to be lake wide, so hopefully we can get it pinned down. If any of you see and instances of overly large numbers of dead steelies on the tribs please send me a PM. There is a number of us that are trying to keep tabs on where the issues are the worst. So far I have heard of instances all over the lake, including the north shore, but thankfully it has only been the steelies that have been affected by this. Good Luck, and if you are a trib fisherman, please take extra caution and time releasing any steelies you catch!!! Capt Rich -
Saltist better drag by far. I had 2 tekota 700 and 800 and had to send them to Tuna Tom to have the drags replaced, right out of the box they were terrible. Like Jason said, the Saltist are much faster, makes clearing lines much easier. IMHO Capt Rich Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

LAKE ONTARIO MEETING with D.E.C/Sea Grant Tue Oct .7th
Rich D replied to RUNNIN REBEL's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Many of us that have watched the size, and year classes shrink over the years have discussed the inbreeding/weakening of the gene pool. We are in favor of seeing the DEC bring new genes back into our system. Unfortunately as we all know the DEC is state run and the govt controls it. So we will be put on the back burner due to $$$$ even though there is hundreds of thousands of dollars in the account. Maybe we need to all, meaning captains, river guides, weekend anglers and anyone with a vested interest in our fishery to come together and voice our opinion on bringing in new genes. My personal opinion is we should still be clipping all hatchery fish, not just letting the trailer sit there unused, to continue the study on wild bs hatchery. It does not cost much to run all of the fry through this system. Here is another thought about the baitfish and trawls. The water has changed, and so has where the baitfish are holding. They are still using the same grid to do these trawls, so if the water temp, clarity, and food are diff from year to year, the trawls will show a significant change in population, even though the real population is only 2 -5 miles one way or the other. These are something's to think about for the state of the lake meetings in the spring. Capt Rich Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
Hi speed reels for core and copper.
Rich D replied to fathobbit0074's topic in Tackle and Techniques
The seagate 50 will be fine for all of those size coppers. I have 400' and 450' coppers on seagate 60's. I have 200, 300 coppers on Saltist 50's Capt Rich Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

Not sure what size cores or coppers you are looking to run. The Daiwa Saltist and Seagates are great core and copper reels. I now have a full season on the seagates with long coppers, and all I can say is WOW. For the price you can't go wrong, will hold up to 450' coppers with plenty of backing. I will be ordering some Seagate 50's for 350' coppers for next year, Good Luck. Capt Rich Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
200-300 lots of bait and skippy kings. Temp is very very deep, 145' down. Riggers parked at 131,138, mag dippys out 335 all fish came on spoons. Stingray and stingers, the Buster was the hot one, with Goldie locks, frost bite and diehard taking fish also. I did not mark any majors, unless the big marks on the bottom in 275-310 are kings, either lakers or kings. Down speed was 2.2-2.3 on FH. Good Luck!!! Right now there are very few fish at the hatchery. The first tank closest to the building has approx 100-120 fish mostly cohos in it. The ladder going into the hatchery has 50-80 fish mostly cohos in it. Very very few kings, this is not looking good. But time will tell. They have not stocked Oneida with browns. The browns and the odd rainbow that are caught come from the streams that dump into Oneida. Good luck Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
