float fishing
Rich D replied to lennybones's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Come on you guys remember those fish do not bite when they enter the river, so lets line them. Yea when those floats drop it is because the line gets wrapped on the fishes fins etc. WTF Wake up and smell the coffee, tell my 9 and 7 year olds that float fishing is not fun. Rich -
Chris, That suxs bro, I have heard of the skrats chewing on the bellows, boot and anything rubber on the outdrive, but not ducer cable. HOw are things going with the family. Give me a shout if you get a chance. Like Glen said it is getting closer to splash down. Rich

LZ, IMHO the Furuno FCV 585 is probably one of the best on the market right now, I have the 620, and love it, but I will up grade to the bigger screen in a few years. I know there are a couple of guys here that have them, if size is an issue, then the 620 would be my second choice. Good Luck. Rich I have dealt with By Owner Electronics , Jim is awesome, he can answer any questions you have.

SM, You can check some of these out at Fat Nancy's, or Whitiker's, both are in Pulaski. As far as rod length, the 13' is probably the best all around, it will be tough to find a shorter rod for the smaller tribs. Most guys make one out of a fly rod, or have one custom made. I fish Oswego and the SR with the Six Rivers, with the higher water it is nice to have a little heavier rod. I think for a starter setup, that Aventa/Six Rivers combo would be good, unless you could get the reel upgraded to the Sheffield, or the extra $$$ for a Raven or Islander. I will be upgrading in a year or 2, and giving this setup to my daughter. Good Luck. Rich

Slider, I have the Sheffield reel, bought it used, no problems so far, knock on wood. I also use the Six rivers, and it is a great rod, enough back bone for kings and great on steelies. I run 8 lb main, then leader down to 6 or 4 when it gets low, and clear. Here is a great site for info on float fishing, a good bunch of guys just like here. www.salmoncrazy.com Good Luck, you are now going to be a member of the Darkside. Rich

Rick, I would work the lake if the winds allow, more room to spread out, and still a ton of fish out there. Tere was a run yesterday, but not a huge run, the temps have been driven down and out. With this cool weather, and the rain this weekend, it will bring another batch in. Good Luck, wish I could be out there myself. Rich -

Erin, Glad to hear you found out what was causing the problem with the FF. Maybe next year you will be able to come out a couple more times to fish. We are loving the new slip, close to home and close to the fish. Talk to you soon. Rich -

I had the pleasure of having Brad(Nemesis) and his son Jordan on the boat Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. We waited to headout Friday due to the wind, imagine that, but we did manage to put 1 slob in the boat, we ended 1 for 2. Saturday we fished a small one derby for another site, which was for big fish. We finished the morning, had to pull lines at noon, going 7 for 12, with the big fish going 28.02 6 hours after catching it, we ended up taking 1st place. The screen was packed with fish, we stayed in the 70-95 fow area from the big river north, and tried to stay out of the pack. It was working good until the other boats saw the nets flying with few of us that were a tad south. All fish came on echips or spinnies pulling ATOMMIK flies, in hammer, hypnotist, glow white, sweet pea patterns, and the fish on glow pattern took a bunch of raps also. The paddles were white/glow, white/mountain dew, black/glow. Hopefully the fish will stay in the lake for a few more weeks, Good Luck guys, I will post pics later today. Here is a pic of Brad and Jordan with the big male we took on Friday afternoon. This fish was over 28lbs on the scale. Jordan doing battle with one of many on Saturday: We kept 5 of the 7 we caught: Here is a pic of the one that won us 1st place, 28.02 lbs: Here is the top 3 places: Good Luck, heard there was a good push of fish that went up the river, but there is plenty more in the lake.
