Welcome to the site Ben. Check out the Fishing Reports section. There's a lot of info there from the guys slipped at Fair Haven. Stop by at Billy V's rig when you get there. He runs a charter service out of Fair Haven and was very helpful to me when I first got started on Lake O. You're gonna like it out there, a bunch of good folks. Good luck on the water.

Picked up everyone at 3AM & on the water by 5AM with my nephew and 2 great-nephews for their first trip to Lake O. A lot of chatter on the radio of guys saying they were nailing the kings & many had a box full, but were not giving out any info. Trolled 120-250 fow with no results & blank screen. Talked to Ray K. around 9AM who was out of Catfish Creek who said they were banging the Coho on spinnies & at what depth, so we headed in that direction. After about 2 hrs & almost in front of the nuke plant we were unable to spot Ray we heard a fella on the radio who gave a complete report on what they were catching the kings on (blue spinnies/blue fly) 525 fow, 375 back on dipsies, 119 down on riggers. He said he had a box full and wanted to share the info. I didn't catch his name, but he was a great sportsman to share that on the radio. We headed out to 550 & set up again & the dipsies were no more than set out & my nephew nailed a nice king about 20 lbs. It was his first king on the big water so I pulled lines and let him play it out and took a while to bring it in. We spun the boat around and went thru the same waypoint & FISH ON again. My great-nephew was handed the rod & BANG a second rod goes off, DOUBLES. I handed the rod off to my other great-nephew. What a Chinese fire drill that was. 2 kids who had never caught fish that big. We landed a Coho on the first rig and settled down for the second. After much grunting and groaning we finally landed the 2nd fish, a nice 24 lb king. That took about a half hour to bring the fish in & I had a ball watching them. I had a smile ear to ear and they were as proud as peacocks. We spun the boat around again and I landed a nice teenager going through the same area. I spoke on the radio to a couple of other members of LOU who were also nailing the kings. Good job guys. The boys were getting tired and also wanted to get back home to show my niece their catch so we headed back home for the 1 1/2 hour drive. When they got back home you couldn't shut them up they were so excited. We had a great day on the water that I'll remember for a long time and the kids will never forget. I'll post a few pics in the "Fishing Pictures" thread as soon as I can log onto the PhotoBucket site. For some reason I'm unable to get it right now. I'll try again later.

I believe that's a typo. The minimum for salmon is 20# I'm pretty sure.

Check rule #16 http://www.loc.org/derby/registration/derbyrules.asp That ought to do it.

I use about 2 wraps of black electrical tape around the arbor before I spool the wire to keep it from slipping. Also, make sure you wrap the wire REAL TIGHT.

I'm heading to Oswego tomorrow morning and am taking my two young nephews for kings. Can anyone advise me where to start = 100-150 fow or 200-350 fow? Or would I be better off fishing for browns in shallow? I haven't been on the lake for over a week and reports on A-Tom-Mik's site aren't updated on the weekends. Thanks for any info. Please PM if necessary, I won't be able to weigh in the LOC tomorrow because they're not signed up & this is just a fun trip. Thanks
-
Hey I think we're related too. We went to different schools together at a different time.

Dang Tom, that black cloud has been following you all year. I hope you do well in the LOC to make up for it. Good Luck

After LOU: GLA A-Tom-Mik At The Oak Spoonpullers Great Lakes Fisherman All great sites with many of the same folks here visiting also.

Here's a fantastic recipe I got from Clayton Diskerud at GLA. I tried it and can attest it is some of the best I've had. It tastes somewhat like the pickled herring you buy in the store, but it has a more firm consistency. Try it, you'll like it. Note: some folks are getting squeamish about using raw fish for anything, for fear of tape worms and other such exotica. If it bothers you, then freeze the fish first. The freezing should eliminate any unwanted critters.

For a more moist fillet, try this: Adirondack Smoked Salmon From the Adirondack Series by MuskyBob 2 Tbs. Garlic Powder 2 Tbs. Kosher or Sea Salt 1 Tbs. Cayenne Pepper 1 Cup Brown Sugar 64 Oz. Apple Juice or cider 1/2 Cup Soy Sauce 1/2 Cup of Maple Syrup Rinse fish and place in brine for 24 hrs. Remove and rinse once and set aside to dry, or pat dry with a paper towel to speed it up a bit. Allow a pelicle to form (dry shiny surface). Place in smoker and smoke for approx. 3.5 hrs. Allow to cool, package in vaccum sealer bags, freeze till you want some. Delicious!!! This is enough brine for 3 racks of fish in my Brinkman.

It would be fun to see a thread of dumb things we do while fishing. -

On the water by 5:15AM Fished 120-180 fow & hooked onto a nice king about 5:45AM off the wire, 300 out, dalmation spinny w/hammer fly. Brought it to the boat & my buddy caught the hooks at the front of the net & was unable to net the fish after 3 attempts with the king still flopping around. Finally lost it - about a 22 pounder. Trolled the rest of the day between 120 to 350 fow. Brought in a 26" laker from 150 fow on a dreamweaver glow lobster spoon off the rigger at 90 down 15' back. That was around 10:30AM. During the time between catches, I took off the dalmation spinny, set it on the engine cover & replaced it with a mtn. dew spinny w/green apple fly. Around 11AM the dipsy hit bottom and released. I pulled it back in to reset & when I tossed the spinny back in, goodbye dalmation spinny w/hammer fly. I grabbed the wrong one off the engine cover & threw it overboard. I couldn't believe I did that I felt so helpless as I watched it slowly sink into oblivion. My buddy laughed like h*ll & that didn't help any. Next time I'll have to slow down & watch what I'm doing. Off the water by 1PM due to the heat & not marking anything anywhere. Maybe this weekend........

Thanks for the video. It brought back some good memories.

That's a real nice sale for the folks around Rochester. With the price of gas it doesn't pay to drive all the way there. Wish we could buy online.

new to wire dipsy- how deep do they run?
muskybob replied to felixjayce's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
The guys here have it too. "Precision Trolling" and "Precision Trolling, Big Water Edition" These books are pretty darn good. Like you say thought, if you don't have the book with you, use the 3 to 1 ratio. Good luck and Good Fishin. -

The 25 watt would be your best bet. Don't worry about how the antenna looks on the boat. It is necessary for the radio to work. I have a 16 footer that I used to use and it was comforting to know that my 8' antenna was doing it's job. Just put a pennant of a naked mermaid on it and nobody will even notice the antenna.
