Since I have seen it in action I will usually have it down unless conditons dont allow it. It is an excellent deep spoon or in the morning up high.... Usually takes multiple shots, if not the bigger fish of the day!
-
Thats my starting point also. Thats where the majority of my bigger kings have come from. Fish highier than that and you will get skips and teens all day long.
-
I would definatly contact the DEC about your method and see what they say. I agree with everything Paul said, these fish go through enough stress from being caught and released besides popping a hold through their fin. Stop poking holes till you talk to them and Let us know what the DEC tells you.

Left the dock around 530, made a run east and set up in 100 fow. Fished towards wautoma shoals and swung south in 210 and worked into 120fow. Thats where we stayed most the day with 2 or 3 doubles on BIG KINGS! We ended up 19 for 25 with 5 steelhead, 6 lakers, and the rest kings from 3-21 lbs. During a double header one of the kings got wrapped good around my dipsey and busted off the whole rig after getting it untangled. Also had a steelhead and big king off one rod and both fish went opposite ways and the king won tearing ass draggin the small steelhead with it busting off the cheater line! Great day with some good friends. Of course it sounds to familiar but the ones we lost were good ones. Biggest fish was 21lbs and had a few others around the 20 mark, a couple steelhead with the biggest being 8 pounds. The lakers were pigs as usual 8-12 pounds. Back at the dock at 2:00 There was a real lull between 12 and 2(only 2bites) That early bite was the ticket, seemed to shut down around 10 am. We did alot more bites on a south troll today, with the downspeed being 2.5- 2.8. Hottest set up was a dalmation spin doc/hammer fly off the rigger down 105 with a cheater 15 ft above with a SSW. I will post some pics when I get them.

Congrats on the fish guys, looks like you had a nice nite out. No problem on the reports, im glad you were able to get into some steel/kings. -
Late start this morning with me and the old man. Planned on doing some multispecies fishing,,,kings/steelies/lakers/bass but never made it to the bass. Hit the water around 730 and motored out east to 150 then set up and trolled north east. Ended up 4 for 7 on silvers, boating more big chrome along with a 10 pound king. The steel head were all over the water column today. Had one hit a flasher fly down 70, spoons at 35 and 110. Down 90 it was hitting 47-48 degrees over 200-250 towards wautoma shoals. Took a real good rip on the wire today, BIG head shakes, but off before I could think about how big it was. How does a fish get off a 2x treble and 4/0 octopus hook going 2.5 mph? I just dont get it. The waves were beating us up pretty good so we motored in to work the same area for lakers as the day before and ended up 16-19 on lakers in 2 hrs of fishing....again, All lakers were avg 8-9 pounds with the bigger ones at 13-14 pounds! The best part of the day was that I let(made) my father real in 90 % of the fish which included 1 king and 1 steelhead on wire and 16 lakers....at one point turns to me and says, "NO I dont want it, I dont want to real in another one"!! Made my day let me tell you. couple pics

Left the dock at 6am and motored out to 80 fow and began search mode. There was good bait and marks all over the place in 80-120 fow. Threw down a few rods to see if they wanted to play. TO MUCH BAIT, after 30 minutes I turned north infront of the pumphouse back in search mode. From 630-1030 it was a nice steady pick on silvers going 12 for 14. The big fish of the day was 17 pound king. The chromers were all good size with 4 fish at the 8 pound mark and 1 close to 10 lbs. Kings were mostly smaller 5-6 pounds cept the big guy. Steelhead were in the top 45 fow and the kings all came deep 90-120 down over 250-380 fow. All spoons today, 2 bites on the flasher flys. We then motored in to try for a derby laker from 11-1200 and wacked 8 fish and dropped one. All the lakers were pigs today, with 3 over 12 pounds and 5 around the 8-10 pound mark. Finished up 20 for 23 all fish CPRed for another day. Great day on the water!! Starting to shape up out there for sure. Jax

Spent the good part of my morning with Gambler installing my Simrad AP14R and Im so glad it went smooth. Started around 9 and finished up close to noon. Replacing the existing rack and pinion cable with a rotary cable, replacing the helm unit and running and mounting appropriate hardware. Thanks again brian, it definatly went alot faster having two of us working at it. Sooo of course had to test out the AP and calibrate it right?? Went to sandy around 530pm to see calm waters, and little breeze. Dropped in close to 6 and had it calibrated in about 3 minutes. Motored around inside 100 fow and messed around for an hour or so then pointed the boat north. Fished the temps and ended up 5 for 5 in about 3 hrs of fishing. All fish were kings with biggest around 14 lbs the rest smaller with one dink. No particular pattern except deep! 180-250fow down 100-140. First fish to release a dipsey in awhile was the 14 lber actually took drag and fought! I didnt have to manually pop the dipsey to avoid drowning out a skipper. Nice night out and nice to have the autopilot installed and working!! Should be out wednesday and thursday mornin. Jax

Shade I think you missed his point about flags......I agree that people need to know you are running copper just to avoid issues. The safest bet is to just stay clear of all packs of boats but it is definatly not a bad idea about running something to notify other boats you are running copper. If a boat is in near your spread or approaching the back end of your boat wave them off. I think this is becoming more the normal for running copper and dealing with closing boats. Also a radio call wouldnt hurt if they dont see you waving them off. Jax

Just curious.... no pics still?

What are the advantages of this as compared to using rubberbands for fixed cheaters?
-
Dont change em up unless you start seein the fish shyin away on your FF or you are marking a ton and not getting bit. Im with RR let it ride until the fish tell you what they want or dont want. Change up your speed, depths, lead lengths then go ahead and play around with your spread. Have confidence in your selection until the fish tell you differently... Jax

I would also like to thank you guys for putting on a great event! All the arrangments worked out great as far as enough room for everyone, food, giveaways, etc. Its only going to get bigger and better! I have never won anything in raffles before and ended up walking out with a couple hundred dollars worth of equipment for 20 bucks worth of tickets!! This event is another opportunity to meet some of the great fishing teams and people from the LOU. Great job to all and see you guys next year for sure. Jax Team Yankee Troller -

http://www.orleanscountytourism.com/wbf/lodging.htm Great location year-round for trout and salmon if thats what you want to fish for. What kind of boat do you have? Jax

Run both until the fish tell you what they want. I like to run spoons off the boards even in the spring. A big split shot above the spoon about 8 feet, just need to watch your turns or else you will hang up. I have taken alot of big browns on spoons mixed into a stickbait progam. Once the sun gets highier and the fish slide out deeper, spoons off the riggers can not be beat for big browns. Thermocline browns mid summer is another good time to get your spoons out and hold on. You can get your big boys once the thermocline sets up... Jax
