2007 Lake Ontario United Fishing Tournament
Fishstix replied to TOP SECRET's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Bobs Boy . I answered your radio call Sat . But must be you could not hear me. As far as pictures go I didnt take any pictures. Probably should have.I had the camera in the boat. Fish is in the freezer. The derby runs for a month and Im hopeing for something bigger. Everyone is king crazy, leaving the browns and bows alone. Except up at my camp they are all chompin at the bit to beat me.I caught another brn. today weighed 9.5 . Probably should have weighd a couple steelhead today. But once you put them on the hook and they get thrashing around you pretty much have to keep them. I killed a 9.5 steelhead Sat afternoon that I didnt really want to keep by trying to weigh him. I dont know where all the steelhead came from this year. But they are there week in and week out. Also they have been cooperating all day long. The brn. bite has been tough unless you can find some stained water. Like after the storm we had last Fri. nite.I didnt brn. fish at all Sunday.... -
Had a pretty good bite going all weekend. Never went over 100FOW. Strange weekend, a good weekend to leave your temp probe home. blue sky ,mid day 57degree water and a laker bite on top? I guess Ive gotta say I catch more fish out of temp than in. Ive already forgotten the fish numbers from sAT, But I remember weighing in the 1st place brn trout in the LOC 13lb 12 oz.. Today was a mega bite day . Had all rods working {except the wires} boated 21 fish this morn. probably 8 or 10 bows in the 9 to 10lb class. also picked up a 9.5 brn. various lakers, kings , cohos. No derby fish . Green spoons was the hot ticket. Only had one fly bite and that was a laker off the top of a baitpile.80 down. Most all fish came off the top or down around 20 feet. Fished less than 100fow all weekend. Long weekend Im beat. If you twist their arm at the weigh station they will put your amature boat name on the LOC leaderboard.

The first place brn was caught on my boat yeasterday by my neighbor. I hope it holds out till the end. My neighbos is now my boat driver. Now its my turn. Did 21 fish today{Sunday} ,no derby fish though.

Interesting looking dodgers. Ive been thinking I should paint up some "black majic" dodgers. Havent had to mess with the dodger stuff yet this yr. Most all our action has been on top. That will change soon though.

Chinook That rig sounds interesting. Are you talking a 1lb weight like a small downrigger ball?Or something like a weight off a threeway swivel? At our port we call em Dodgers if they go side to side. Anything that spins is called a rotator . Saves a lot of confusion.

The steelhead bite has just been amazing this yr.I know Im kinda rough in my posts but thats one of those long skinny steelies. [ what I call em]The big big steelhead will be right along behind them shortly.I would get right back out there. -
What a beautiful little baby. Nice pictures. You must be a proud father. I guess I can say this here,Hell Ray would." Your luckey it was a boy you only have 2 rods to worry about". Take a lot of pictures . Not the digital camera type but prints that you hold in your hands.Ive got three kids in there 20s . I didnt take enough pictures.I didnt take them fishing much when they were younger I could not afford it.

Ray you are probably right I havent ran to many honeybees this year.Ive ran the real small ones for cheaters.I ve ran that red /white with black spots I think that colors done already. Im guessing something along the lines of brass and silver w/green glow and bubbletape. Or the good ole purple thunder.Or 42 second spoon. Or NK halogram w/ orange halfback. Or NK vampires. Or stinger tuxedo.Or black majic. Ive cranked them in the past on silver raspberry,Blue and white. Jezz I could go on and on here. -
You are better off letting them bite. Because if you kill one 10 more show up for the funeral. Off spray works good . I just try and keep it off my hands. Its tuff when you are in the back of the boat fighting a fish and they are tearing up your anckles, right thru your socks. There were a lot of little flys last Sunday flying around the boat amd they seemed to grow as the day progressed. I would imagine by this weekend they will be anckle nipper size.

Yep that was me. you were headed NW . I was headed SW.I usually work the skinny water in the morn. Looking for a good brown. Tere has just been to much bait around lately to get the browns to turn on. The fish are there but I havent found a good brn. spoon yet. -
Finding a dependable observer is tough. What about a Pro Am patrol? Out on the water? They could run around count rods etc.

I drive truck. NYS DOT has gotten real pickey. Its not about safety anymore its all about money.Fines run up in the thousands.I would not dare chance it.

This is just a post to get some board action going. Its been kinda quiet lately. I was out fishing with Holy Mackerel a couple weeks ago. We were just yacking. Ive known him probably 10yrs or so. Well he brings up the story of the state record Atlantic salmon. Caught on his boat by a guy he took out fishing. This is a true story. I camp right next to him . Sit around the campfire evenings. Drink a few blue and silvers . fish together and he never mentioned it till the other day. If a state record salmon was caught in my boat I would have it plastered all over the place. Im not sure what yr it was caught he told me but the blue and silver blurs the memory. Anyone who thinks they are a good fisherman should go out fishing with this guy. Every little detail , every rattle, every gust of wind , is taken into account. When the fish are biteing its easy. Everyone catches a coolerful. When they are not biteing and no one is catching fish. Mackerel still catches.Occasionaly Ill kick his ass fishing but its usually the other way around. We are useing his boat for the Sodus Pro Am. Amature division.Im looking forward to a strong finish.

I forgot to mention the lakers in my post. Been getting a few off the boards. The color "rasberry" is a term you dont hear on the computer boards much. You must be a ole Hughes fisherman. Stop by my camper next time your up . 1st road up the hill 2nd camper on the left. Also we run channel 68. Sunday I was just inside you in 210FOW. -
My plan last weekend was to get the wires going.Last year we caught kings all during the spring derby this year has been a different story. I wont complain about the steelhead action thou. Fri nite managed to pull a small brown out of 30ft of clear water. Sat ran the wires all day out deeper 190 to 400 fow. They rotted in the water. All fish we caught Sat came off the top including a laker. Broke the ice Sunday Had a couple extra guys in the boat so I could run 8 rods. Two fish off the wires a nice steelie and a nice Coho. Finally got the wires going a little. Greens workin, copper orange stopped. Also I plucked about a 10lb king 20 down so they are finally starting to show up . Lots of bait up high. Next weekend should be a smoker. Cant wait.

Im not a florocarbon fan. But that boardname"aquaholic"has got to be the best one ever. -
divers? cheaters?
Fishstix replied to The Scottsman's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I usually run a cheater on my dodger fly setups.I have taken some pretty good fish on them with no problems. My cheaters are 4 ft. They do get wrapped around the dodger but its just a matter of a couple wraps or so.Definately not the tangled up mess you would think you would get.I was leary before I tried it but its routine now. -
I didnt fish the Seneca derby this year. Gas prices were the main reason.I have a economy car I drive back and forth to LO. How ever the yr. I caught the big laker in the Seneca derby it came off the top in 15fow.Off a sutton spoon . w/ 30lb test line. It took awhile for me to figure it out but now I awalys run a lure in the propwash.Swing a rigger around so its right in the bubbles. I talked to Wildman Sat nite he put in a 3rd place fish this yr. Said they didnt catch as many as they usually do. They are deep water guys. I now wish I would have fished the derby after reading NO Clues post. I recognized the shoreline those fish were right up my alley. If you can get the right surface temps. [i look for 50] and the suns not to bright the agressive lakers will be in the top 20 fow. You can go fast to cover a lot of water. Better yet if there is a bughatch going on the insides of their mouths will be loaded with small black spots where they are on top eating bugs. Look for swallows flying close to the surface. Ive had lakers jump many times, thought I had the biggest rainbow in the lake. When they are on top and on the feed it a whole different ballgame. The Sodus pt. buckeye. spoon is a Michigan Stinger .Brass and red /w some crinkle tape on it. Abes has em hanging on the wall or at least he did. Ray as far as posting pictures I take with my camera I lost my camera download program . If I want to post a picture I have to burn a disk each time.

Nice Job Yankee.

Fisgo... Sometimes the riggers work and the wires wont fire.Try runnig you stuff closer to the ball....... Like 5 ft or less.

Well the big fish seem to be gone . Didnt really mark any salmon either. Caught some small cohos and steelhead thats about it. I think we need a good strong westerly blow to set things up.I probably should have stayed in tight and worked on the browns but its hard to do with the great steelhead fishery we have had lately. Someone ,somewhere around the lake has a school of big steelhead.I hope they go easy on it. I had flat water, perfict temps but the fish were scattered. Catch one and put in a weigh point by the time you got back around the fish were gone. Best lure was [ for two weeks now] a stinger "Sodus Point Buckeye".That a stinger rep gave me. I havent bought another one .I know if I load up with em they will stop working ,

Looks like you had a great time. Thanks for taking the time to post pictures. That grape dot watermellon has probably been my best spoon 2 yrs in a row. Seemed strange to see one in someone elses pictures. -
Wow ..no junk ones out there. I figured there would be a lot of em.
