Can angle of rigger cable be used for speed?
rustyrat replied to lavarock64's topic in Tackle and Techniques
For me the best way was to use a thumper rod down the middle. I didn't get my depth raider till this year and I caught lots o kings with out speed and temp using the thumper with an 8 in flasher fly rig with a 1 lb ball. I've had the cables way back and almost straight down and still going the right speed, so I don't think cable angle will do it for ya. Ya just don't know what kind of current is down there. RR -
Nice going Chowder. There is no rule of thumb with those speeds. It depends on the wind and currents and what they are doing that particular day. Trust the probe. Rig your flies with 40 or 50 lb floro, then that won't happen to you. Split, I'm going to get in the derby, even if I don't fish, to me its a very worthy cause, me being a musician and everything! lol RR

Trolling speed without guage.
rustyrat replied to jjfishes's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I agree totaly. Get a depth raider. I won a derby 2 days after I installed mine. Found out I was going way to slow for the browns and salmon. Before that I used a thumper rod and it worked well but with only 2 people on board its a pain to run and I would loose out on running a wire dipsy rig. RR -
Split, Do you think I should enter? I think I can get out on sunday. Do you have a link? RR
-
They are usually right next to the dipsys on the rack in the store. Its a rubber shock absorber. Connect the wire to the dipsy. On the other end of the dipsy connect the snubber, 8 ft of 40lb test leader, then the flasher fly or spoon. RR
-
Oh slide diver! Man i thought you were trying to run sliders off a dipsy! I'm like, thats frickin just nuts! lol Yea 25 ft. RR
-
Better off? Not really. They both work excellent. I don't understand the slider question. RR

Clearing rods to me is a big no no. Leave the rods in and you will be suprised how many times you will double up. Those kings feed in pods, where there is one there are many. That alone will put more fish in the boat. you need to have some sort of flasher, dodger etc when running flies. If you are going to stack rods, run spoons on the top with a shorter lead. another reason to run heavier line is a big king will sometimes bite right thru 40lb test! If they inhale a spoon, you are not going to land that fish on 15lb. just tryin to help you out here. RR

You might want to change the name! LOL Bananas is bad luck for salmon fishin! lol Just bustin Shade! congrats on the new ride. RR

Everyone on my boat gets a full cut after taxes over 300 bucks. Simple. Its luck of the draw who's on the rod. RR

I shot off an e mail to Dave about the passing the rod thingy. When i hear from him, I'll post back on a new thread. I wouldn't want anyone here getting penalized for wrong info. RR
-
The thing here is every member on this board plays buy the rules. This very topic gets attention every year at derby time. Dave C. reads this board. If he thought it was a viable thing to do, he would have done it by now. Just my take on it. So to me its beatin a dead horse. good luck to all. I'm going to have to sit here and wait till next week and its killin me! RR
-
Dave addressed this in one of the old threads but I can't find it. Thats where I got my info from him. It makes a difference on who's name you register it under. I'll look again. RR
-
Yes you can pass off the rod. I'm not sure whos name you register under though. Its either the person who did the majority of the fight or the the person on the rod when netted. I'm sure someone here knows who to register the fish under. RR
-
Ray, Only 300 in gas!? lol RR
-
Ray, not everyone will pre register. I feel if Dave thought it would benifit the derby, he would have implemented it a few years ago. They way its set up is to protect US non cheating fishermen and women. 20K is a good wad of cash and despite US that play by the rules, there will be someone who won't and Dave has done well to protect US! I totally understand and abide by the rules. I understand that I have to weigh a fish in by 8:00 pm. When we fish the pro am we HAVE to be inside the peir heads at 2:00 or a fish hooked after 1:00 is not eligable. No body moans about that. To me this is the same thing. RR
-
Why would you be using 15 lb test for 20 to 30 lb kings? Kings aren't line shy and flies are rigged with florocarbon! Just asking for trouble, especially with dodgers and flies. Switch to 30 lb. RR
-
Its to prevent cheating. Someone catches a big fish and they are not entered. They buy a pass and weigh the fish in the next day. I think the rules are just fine. You know what they are for the derby, just follow them instead of complaining about it. Same thing every year. It a well run derby! RR
-
Check your speed at the all depths. I will lower the prob to 30 ft first and check it there before going deeper. Believe your readings. Makes a big difference for the browns and salmon. Lakers don't care. RR
-
Fish for kings, don't bother with the mud chickens. Kings can be caught in 100 fow which is not far to run out of oswego. I used to do it in a 16 fter. Just have to pick your days. They will be in that range very soon if not allready. RR
-
I am going 2.4 to 2.6 at the ball, which is sometimes 2.8 to 3.0 on the surface. Believe me the lakers don't mind that at all. but you need to go that fast for the browns and salmon. I still catch a lot of lakers at that speed. RR

What about the super 8 in pulaski?
