  1. Any idea on the number of boats that will enter?
  2. Tom, At the state of the lake meeting, they announced that they are increasing lake trout stocking to 800,000.
  3. I-bay warm water fishery is tough to figure out. Once you do, the fishing is great. A little hint about walleye in I-bay, don't troll them! If you do, row or use a trolling motor! When I used to fish the bay, we caught a lot of pike, bass and walleye.
  4. The reason for the increase in lake trout stocking is to increase natural reproduction. The percentage is low but the more they stock the more natural reproduction they will get.
  5. Anyone see the legislation on Spoonpullers from the canadian government about stocking? Looks like they are looking to stop stocking fish that are non-native species and only stock native species. Hmmmmm Lakers and Atlantics anyone?
  6. I run two riggers. One 5' back from the rigger and the other 15' back. I run my spin n glows 36" behind the cowbells.
  7. Here is a couple of pigs caught the last couple years. I will let the pictures do the talking. I only run #5 Hammer Head Cowbells. I have #4's but they rarely do better than the #5's. 34.06 23.08 23.12 24.11
  8. Rick, it is easier to find bigger lakers with lower numbers in the lake. There is a lot less weeding out of smaller ones. With the recent upswing in laker populations, I have to work a lot harder to find slob lakers.
  9. Don't worry, the 300,000 extra lakers they are going to stock will put a dent in the population! Believe it or not, I would rather see it stay at 500,000 and stock more kings. It is much easier to fix an over abundance of kings if the bait population took a dump. 3 to 4 year and the kings are gone.
  10. Happy belated B-day Chad.
  11. When fishing is great, you do not learn much. Tough bite forces you to put the pieces of the puzzle together or try something that you normally would not try. We all love a good blood bath but easy is not always better!
  12. The challenges as a captain are what kept me from being a captain. If I did not have the job I have, I might have ended up chartering. I give any captain a lot of credit. As for the true full time guys, I give you even more credit. Not the easiest way to make a living. I have no problem staying a rec fishermen and fishing a couple tournies here and there. Makes life a little easier! Anyone that has an issue with the prices of a charter, or tipping, try first mating on a boat or getting your license and seeing first hand what captains deal with every day!
  13. Get the parts from tuna toms and replace it yourself. Should be easy to do.
  14. The Fishhawk x4 is an awesome unit. No rigger cable replacement needed. You do have to mount a triducer to the boat. The Fishhawk can also be used on ANY rigger on the boat. If you had an issue with the rigger the probe is on, you could switch it to another rigger and it would work. Can't to that with a sub troll.
  15. In order for a captain to make a living, he has to work his a$$ off in the short season here on Lake Ontario. After expenses, not a lot is left at the end of the day. Doing double trips a day, working every day during the season are the only way to survive chartering. They are under paid in my opinion.
  16. What people need to understand about the charter business is how expensive it is to operate a charter business. What Lake Ontario captains make is a drop in the bucket compared to what captains make in the salt. What you get for the price of a Lake Ontario charter captain is a great deal. Throwing the guy a tip should not even be questioned. A day of fishing, fish cleaned and some good old stories from the years past is worth the investment if you ask me. Go to the store and purchase the amount of fish you get from a charter and you spent most of what it cost for the trip. I think last time I looked, wild caught salmon was around 14.99/lb.
  17. Not until later in the day when we went out over 30 fow. Did a king out there and a laker around 11:30.
  18. Who cares what the manual says. Cheap insurance policy if you ask me. I do mine every other year. Overheat the engine, it might cost you way more than a simple impellor replacement.
  19. Here is a pic of the Escape from the other day off of Hamlin Beach
  20. 5/7 Fished East of the creek and started the season off with a 19lb king letting out the 4th rod of the season. I was just getting the release out to the board and the king almost ripped the rod out of my hand. We did a coho minutes after and then things went quiet for hours. Tons of bait screwed the bite up. Did not have another release until we trolled back to the west of the creek. We did a nice brown and lost 2 others before pulling the plug due to a building East wind. 5/9 Started West of the creek in 12 fow and pulled a king and a coho in front of the pump house. Continued West to the nose pulling a mixed bag. Ended the day with the Lake Ontario Grandslam. 6 kings 8 - 19lbs, 1 coho, 1 atlantic, 2 browns, 2 lakers and a steelhead. Found the kings from 15 - 35 fow. Firetiger sticks off the boards and Stinger Stingray NBK, Gator and Frog Circus Freak all took fish. The water from the creek to the nose was 46 - 50 degrees. Right at Devils Nose, there was a big break. The water went from 48 - 43 degrees. There was nothing West of the break.
  21. It's warming good off sandy. 49 degrees out to fifty foot yesterday. One hell of a temp break in fifty. This warm up coming will kick start things.
