I run meat rigs off of divers, coppers and riggers. When we won the Sandy Creek shootout in 2020, I ran 6 meat rigs with 8" paddles to start the day. By the end of the day, it was on all 8 rods. When meat is on fire, you cant go wrong with running lots of meat. Like I said above, I run mostly 8" paddles. I rarely run big stuff. If I do, its usually off a rigger not a diver or copper. I like longer leaders 60 -72". I run a lot of twinkie rigs too.

If they survived well, I'm all for having more Atlantics. But as I pointed out in the thread on the open lake discussion, Atlantics are greatly affected by Thiamine deficiency (in both fry and adults) and mortality is high. Atlantics will not do well until they have a more diverse diet with less alewife.

Running tackle that is comparable in speed tolerance is key. Like Bob, I run a lot of Stingers (paint durability sucks but their blank is awesome). I can run them down to 1.8 and up to 3.0. On meat rigs, I like 60-72" leaders. I also run a lot of 8" paddles instead of 10" and 11" paddles. As for coppers, leadcore and weighted steel, I have an arsenal of coppers and leadcores to cover more conditions (I have copper rods in 200,250,300,350,400,450,500 and 550 and leadcores in 1,2 ,3 ,5, 7 ang 10 colors. Only having one or two coppers / leadcores / weighted steel really hinders your ability to cover the water column.

So because you never have seen an Atlantic die off it isn’t happening? The DEC is saying it happens. More than likely they die before entering the tribs or before even reaching maturity. The other salmonoids are affected but not as much as the Atlantic’s. It was in a slide years ago in the state of the lake meetings when they found out why the steelhead were dying off. They stock close numbers of coho yet the salmon River is LOADED with coho come September. It’s not the lake guys killing all those Atlantic’s. We average about one Atlantic a season on my boat. We average a lot more coho per season. -

According to the link originally posted from the DEC, adult mortality due to thiamine deficiency is an issue. Just like the steelhead, Atlantic’s are susceptible to thiamine deficiency killing adults. (The steelhead die off a couple years ago is a perfect example of thiamine deficiency and adult mortality). -

It’s a pipe dream…….. I’ll say it again, they don’t to well on an alewife diet due to thiame deficiency. With the numbers stocked already, we should have great returns (we have small returns that are not great compared to other species). Another thing I have noticed with Atlantic’s, the ones stocked look like hell. I have only caught a couple with perfect fins. Most of their fins are deformed. I went to the Salmon River with my buddy that was a guide to chase early kings one September. We caught a ton of stocker Atlantic’s that looked horrible. -
I agree. Weights are still bigger than 2018 when I had a 26 and change that placed 5th in the Summer LOC.

They are tack drivers and the deer just drop! I'm getting one for my kid this fall.

I have a CVA Accura V2 and its an awesome gun. I highly recommend the Blackhorn 209 powder and breech plug to go with it.

They may treat king and steelhead eggs but natural reproduction is high without it. They showed a slide years ago at the state of the lake meetings ranking which species were most susceptible to thiamine deficiency. I wish I could find it. If I recall correctly, Atlantic’s were most susceptible to thiamine deficiency. -

They know it’s an issue yet they still keep going with the Atlantic project. It’s right in their posting about the Atlantic stockings. This is also money and effort spent on a species that will run 1 tributary in the summer. It could possibly create a fishery in one South shore tributary but we want to reduce king stockings and affect every trib and the entire lake. The Salmon River is the ONLY tributary on the south shore that will support Atlantic’s and have enough public access to fish them. -

There have been studies done that show alewife are horrible for Atlantic’s. They are also horrible for walleye. The thiamine deficiency issue hinders natural reproduction and can cause mortality. Continuing to put time and effort into a species that doesn’t survive well with an alewife diet, is a waste of time and resources. Year after year the DEC stocks Atlantic’s and very few are caught compared to Coho (similar stocking numbers). The salmon river is loaded with cohos in the fall. Atlantic’s are in the Salmon River all summer and Fall but in low numbers. It’s a failed project that’s been going on for decades and it’s ridiculous to continue to waste time, money and resources. If the return rate was high like other species, I’m all for adding some Atlantic’s to make the fishery more diverse. Since the return rate is horrible, this pipe dream has to stop. It’s like a retirement plan. If I put a ton of money in and get very little return, it’s time to move my money to something with a higher return for my effort. -

The Canadians have pumped hundreds of thousands of Atlantic’s into the system with piss poor returns. If the return rate was good, let’s move forward. Until that issue is resolved, we are blowing money and resources that are already slim in this fishery. It’s a pipe dream that isn’t reality until they can figure out the thiamine issue with Atlantic’s. -

It’s not about angler participation. It’s about survival. Survival of Atlantic’s is horrible with alewife as a main food source. Until there is a better food source for Atlantic’s, it’s a waste of time, money, hatchery space and resources to continue to try to expand this program. I’m all for them as part of the fishery but it doesn’t make sense to waste resources that are already thin in the hatcheries. They are a great sport fish but, survival is horrible and they don’t hold a candle to kings. Look into how many Atlantic’s are stocked on the north shore and then look at the numbers of returns as adults to the tribs they were stocked in. Hundreds of thousands stocked and less than 25 returns most years. -

I have 2 Coleman 150 qts and 1 Igloo 150qt. The colemans hold ice three times longer than the Igloo. Look into the Coleman marine 150qt cooler. I would stay away from the Igloo unless you want to burn through ice.

The big issue is Thiamine deficiency and mortality of Atlantic’s. Canada has proved the Atlantic program is a complete flop. Hundreds of thousands stocked yearly and returns of less than 25 or less adults Year after year. Why do we keep trying this program with poor results? Until alewife are gone, Atlantic’s will not do well in Lake Ontario. The trib anglers and DEC have to give up this pipe dream and face the fact that it isn’t going to work. They stock less coho in the lake (lake wide) than coho and we actually see big returns of coho. If coho returns were as low as Atlantic returns, the program would be cut. This program is a complete waste of resources and hatchery space. -
