  3. December 19 pm 45 degrees SW wind 15 mph with gusts 35+ Cloudy The last sit for 2017. Not a lot moving today. Warm and windy surely doesn't help. Just a couple of deer (one doe and one fawn). Hoping for one last deer for the freezer but nothing in range. Sent from my XT1585 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  7. SOLD-Hunting and fishing books free to a good home. Pick up only. Local library did not want them so I thought I would give them away to a LOU member that would use them. Rob 585-703-0969 Sent from my XT1585 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  8. So here is the bullet that I shot my muzzleloader buck with. It went through the near shoulder and poked a pin hole through the hide on the far side. (same exact thing it did to my buck last year). So it didn't quite pass through. As you can see there is no mushrooming. No fragmenting. It's practically reusable. 11. December 18 pm 38 degrees SW wind 10-20 mph Cloudy A few deer started moving just before 4pm but it wasn't until after dusk that they really started to move. At least 15 deer seen and I can only confirm one set of antlers. Never had a good shot at a big doe. I hunted from the ground and seven of them past right by my stand. Of course. I have had a camera there since the last day of gun season and it has a ton of pictures of deer in the field. One more chance at it tomorrow. Sent from my XT1585 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  14. December 17 pm 22 degrees East wind 5 mph Cloudy Last chance this afternoon to get my kid out in the woods for the season. We were hoping for a shot at a buck of any size but unfortunately tonight wasn't the night. A few deer sight in the far end of the field and that would be it. 15. So after further review it looks like the buck I shot this week is a total loss in meat. What I originally thought was the bullet entry hole in the abdomen was actually a puncture wound with internal damage. A second puncture wound was found in the neck. Both looked to be from another bucks antlers and both sights were badly infected. Both rear hams were chewed on by coyotes also obviously a result from being left for over a day. With all that I'm not taking any chances with it. I'm considering it a total loss. The only good news was confirmation of a good shot. Near shoulder, double lung. 16. Dont forget to report your harvest. Online reporting is a piece of cake. https://decals.dec.ny.gov/DECALSCitizenWeb/citizenhome.htm
  17. So after blowing this opportunity, I spent the following night and day questioning the shot. It didn't quite add up. The shot felt good. Although it didn't seem like the buck was wounded the other buck with him acted strangely prior to reaching the woods. I easily found the spot he was standing when I made the shot. Zero blood and no hair. I followed the bucks tracks from the field almost to the woods with no signs of anything. I left the woods that day disappointed and full of questions. Still convinced I made a good shot. My next opportunity to hunt was Friday morning. I decided I would hunt the am and afterwards look again for any sign. Originally I thought the shot to be no more than 90 yards but after further review it was more like 125. I walked my tracks from the other day, walked to the edge of the woods, and to my surprise there was my buck, dead. There's a ditch on the edge of the field and there he was dead in the ditch. In my original search I somehow could not see him in the ditch. I assume it was because of the elevation and his location on the downhill side of the ditch that made it impossible to see. If I had taken ten more steps the night I shot him then I would have easily noticed him. Crazy. After an extensive autopsy I found extensive internal damage. He was on a hard angle quartering away so the entry was beyond the rib cage. Liver, both lungs were jellied, and the near shoulder was destroyed. The bullet must of fragmented and wreaked havoc inside the cavity. No exit hole. Needless to say I am glad I second guessed myself and went back. I'm just as much happy as I am relieved. Decent 9pt with the muzzleloader late season. Sent from my XT1585 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
