The word "backing" is misleading. We dont put "backing" on diver reels for backing. We put it on there to eat up additional reel space to make sure the spool is full and our counters are reading accurately. An okuma 30 size reel requires about 300' of 30# mono plus 1000' of wire to achieve a full spool. A 45 size reel will obviously require much more than that. You may have to reverse spool the first one in order to figure it out. An albright knot will work fine for your connection.
Hopefully there is an autopilot expert out there that can help... I have been having some trouble with my Raymarine autopilot. The unit worked flawlessly all last season. After a spending a long spring rewiring the boat, I am afraid something may have been "altered". The problem... when i switch to auto the boat slowly turns rudder hard left or right (depending on which way it is already favoring) and stays there. The autopilot forces the boat to do circles. I replaced the rudder reference transducer already. Help!

Two weeks ago, I witnessed a kayak almost get run over by a sailboat leaving the byc channel. Scared the hell out of the kayaker. Sailboat acted like somehow it was her fault.

Rules of the road... most have no idea. And the ignorance is worse if you have a sail for some reason.
