  1. I have one of these, great boat! The walk-through middle is awesome. Solid for a shallow v, gear + cooler/ice + 2 batteries + 6 gal tank + me and a 15 hp goes 20 mph. Recommended if you're in the market for a boat like this.
  2. You could try a pole. A good long pole and you can stand up while poling to see and be stealthy moving around. Sometimes (salt flats usually I think) guys have platforms on the boat to get even higher to see into the water better. I've thought about getting in there myself, bringing a pole and electric motor on my jon. Length depends on your height above water and depth of water, I'm guessing 12' to start? No idea how deep it is though.
  3. I hear you, mentioned it because I know people are more likely to donate the easier it is, and you have a link that's easy to share around. Whether it's worth it or not I can't say. I know someone who used giveforward.com and raised over 30K for a medical emergency, they had a lot of good things to say about them. Forgot the name earlier but that's a good one. Still charge fees though. At least a PayPal account like reapagan suggested, that still makes it pretty simple to donate from the computer. The way things are going with my knees I may need this eventually so I'll be donating one way or another, still have a checkbook gathering dust I can use if need be!
  4. Rollie you could look into a fund raising website too, they can be pretty effective. Search for that term and there are lots of options. GoFundMe, CrowdRise, Fundly, and plenty more. It makes it very easy to donate. It's great you're moving right along!
  5. Not those, but I've tried other 8" and 12". Never caught one but didn't spend more than 2 hrs max with them. I was catching fish on 4", wasn't on the big ones, decided more was better and stuck with the smaller ones. I have talked to several guys that use 8" or so and they said they don't get many but the average size is larger. Makes sense. I wonder what the primary baitfish is for those lakers in your video, our sawbellies rarely get large and so if one is matching the bait I'd say 8" as a top end with most adult alewives around here being 4-6", so that's what I'm generally putting down there. But the big beastly top dog lakers... they may be eating something else and go for something considerably larger!
  6. Tried it on lakers, it works, but not the best rig in my opinion. At least the way I fish lakers, the jig is usually moving a lot and a regular head is better like zackblain said. I've gotten a few when it's super slow by rigging one up and dragging it on the bottom while barely drifting. Used a 2 oz weight. Try it out on a slow day it never hurts to mix it up.
  7. Jack you don't need a light if you're on shore somewhere with lights, which is usually most public access points around the lakes. I get them in late spring onwards at Taughannock Park at night. So do the commercial guys. A dip net works great, it's what I've used the most, wait for them to surface boil and scoop. I've seen a two man op with one guy casting a silver spoon and reeling it slowly to get them to follow, then the other guy scoops them up. I've also used a string of tiny jig hooks to either catch or snag them. This is a little slower depending on fish density and sometimes they don't bite either but it works. That said I have to point out that the only legal way to collect your own is with a gill net or minnow trap. Cast nets, dip nets, seines, etc, are all against regs FYI. If you can find any body of water that has alewives and no trout you may also use a seine.
  8. I've tried some jigs with the hooks on short leaders tied to the same ring as the line and didn't like them much, sounds like similar results to what you had. I like regular or old fashioned style with the hooks on the far end. I think that other style started in saltwater, maybe the fish are more aggressive when hitting them or something but it doesn't seem to work as well on the lakers. 80g is pretty beefy and reminds me of something, I got a call a few months ago from a guy in Traverse City wanting to know about jigging lakers and I filled him in, in return he told me about jigging kings up there. They use real big heavy jigs like yours in shallow water, like 30-40 feet, the bigger the jig the better. He said 3-4 oz. When the fish start staging in late summer they go out and hammer them on these huge bright jigs... must be pissing off the kings or something as smaller jigs get ignored. According to this guy anyway. Something to think about trying! Anyway, sounds like a lot of fun you had out there!
  9. Nice fish! This year has sucked hard. Worst run in the past 10 years, can't even call it a run. Congrats on finding one! Alec
  10. I've done it a couple times and never noticed a draft issue but this was a while back and I have a small boat. It is a long slow ride to the lake and then the northern end of that arm is shallow so if you're trout fishing it's a long ride on the lake too. Bass and panfish maybe not too bad but for me it wasn't worth it.
  11. That's awesome, nice surprise catch! I'd love to get a burbot some day.
  12. Both my parents have had it and they live just up the road. I've been tested twice. It's gotten bad around here, every day we take two or ten off our cat. Doesn't stop in the winter, just a few less. If it's really cold he may not have any but if it's 30 or above it seems they're active. Sometimes we find them crawling on the couch after he's been sitting there. Didn't have to worry about it when we were kids, last 10 years it's just gotten worse and worse. Nasty things. Not as bad as in the south though, I have a buddy in Kentucky with 2 dogs and he has to sweep the floor after they've been outside. Lots more diseases down there too.
  13. Buddy was out about 10 days ago and got nothing on a short trip. Also the DEC netting went slowly again this year and they were relatively small compared to past years. This was all a couple of weeks ago so I can't say anything about recent activity there. Gotta be some fish around but with that forecast wind you won't get much protection except just north of the point, by the time you get anywhere near the Boy Scout camp wind and waves will be in full force.
  14. Look man I don't know why you're trying to pick a fight. You don't know me or what I do or do not support. All I've said on this topic is that shooting anything in the City of Ithaca is against the law, and that I don't believe those who choose to hunt carp with a bow should waste them by leaving them to rot. Waste is a big no-no in the hunting community, right? So why should this be any different? Don't waste what you shoot and follow the law. Other than that, enjoy your outdoor experience. That's all you know about what I think. I admit I'm a stickler for the rules/law but what's wrong with that? I enjoyed archery in school, and shot a longbow for a while when I was younger. While I don't actually hunt myself, I've thought about starting and we allow our neighbors to hunt on our land. Sometimes he gives us venison and I enjoy eating it. I used to average just under 23 / 25 when skeet shooting. I don't know why I'm bothering to justify myself and I'm done talking about it. Have a great weekend!
  15. No need to bring politics into this. I'm pretty sure you aren't allowed to discharge a weapon of any sort within most metropolitan areas, not just Ithaca. The law isn't there to protect the carp, they're thinking of all the kids, people, and pets that frequent these areas. I'm sure we all want some laws to be different, I know I do, but if you have a major problem with one go ahead and try to get it changed. In the meantime it's the law.
  16. Lively1, thanks for bringing this up and it prompted me to check on something I've been meaning to. I've seen guys bowfishing in a few of my favorite carp spots in the spring. Not a boatful like you mention but one or two. If it's legal and not wasteful then okay do your thing, but like you I'm concerned about leaving dead fish around, I don't think that's okay. I did talk to one guy who said he uses them for fertilizer, so that part is fine if true, but these guys were bowfishing within the City of Ithaca. I always wondered about that and just looked it up- it is definitely not legal to discharge a bow (or any weapon) within the City. If any of you are reading this or know them, please be aware of this fact! In the future I'll tell those bowfishing about the law, and if they don't stop, will be making a call. There are plenty of places to find carp if you wish to bowfish, just don't do it in Ithaca. § 219-1. Discharge restricted. A. No person shall discharge any firearm, air gun, spring gun, slingshot or other instrument or weapon within the city... B. Except pursuant to the provisions of § 336-22 of Chapter 336, Parks and Recreation, no person shall discharge, fire or use archery equipment of any kind or nature whatsoever upon any public property of the City of Ithaca. (336-22 excepts the use of archery equipment for classes in Stewart Park.)
  17. That's a heck of a fish, congratulations!
  18. Great brown!
  19. Tough break Marty, once I forgot the bungee holding the lid on my cooler and it flipped off but I saw it in the mirror and it only got as far as the transom.
  20. Just want to say thanks, you certainly got my interest up and I've never caught a walleye. If Otisco wasn't so far from Ithaca and me not knowing a single thing about walleye fishing I'd probably be out there tonight! It's cool to see a nice catch so thanks and keep on fishing. Alec
  21. Thanks Ed! Haven't been out much since June, it was a great morning. Sounds like you got your motor squared away, good news. Les the wind didn't get too bad until just before we made the switch to perch and I used the trolling motor to slow the drift a lot after that, a little bumpy but another body in the front also helps with the little boats. The breeze came up quick though! edit: Found this on YouTube and tried this cleaning method on the perch for the first time, it works great, you peel them like a banana. Need a little practice to get down to 10 seconds though! Whoa the video's right here!
  22. Launched at 6:30, fishing by 6:45. Jigged lakers until 8:45. Started slow with a little bait and very few marks. Zipped up to near Kingtown Beach and the action started picking up for us around 8. Lost/missed a few, broke one off, (must've been a bad knot on my part) got 4 to the boat in around 45 minutes. Took my neighbor Dan out, I looked at the screen and saw a laker near his jig: "start reeling!" All he did was lift his rod and bang fish on! Always get a kick out of that, and it was the big fish of the morning at maybe 7 lbs. 2 others were 4-5 lbs and one dink 2-3 lb. Bite was still on when we left. At this point we switch to perch, never found a good concentration but I brought home 5 for dinner with a couple 11-12" and the other three 9". Did this from 9 to 10:30 and packed it up due to previous commitments. Drifted 1/8 mile of shore or so in 35-55, picked up a few small smallmouth also. Good enough for me, I've never done open water perching on Cayuga. Next time I'll have to try another area for better numbers. Not too shabby overall since we didn't boat the first fish until 8 or so. Great morning though the wind starting ripping pretty good after a few hours. Still fantastic to get out! Edit: fixed a number.
  23. Also look in the "Panfish" section, recent discussion on the topic: http://www.lakeontariounited.com/fishing-hunting/topic/39949-seneca-perch/
  24. That's awesome!!

    Fall Rigs?

Hey okuma nice pile! I'll be plenty happy with even half that, couple big beauties in there too. It's got to be around 8 years since I've gone for perch and nearly all my experience has been through the ice so this will be a lot of fun. I have plenty of octopus hooks, good to know and we'll be sure to look in various depths. Absolut40 thanks for the link, I was wondering about a rig like that, think I'll rig up one of those and another the other way and play around a bit. Cool plenty to work with here, thanks all! I'll report back one way or another.
