  1. Out on Thursday morning, here's a few pics for fun. Fishing was good in 80-100. I know I've caught ~10" lakers but I think this is my smallest. Ten minutes later I snagged a 7" alewife. 6" lake trout: And there is a large fish in this picture I promise... or at least part of one! And the tail of the jig. I tried to take an underwater pic but mostly missed. Kind of an interesting pic anyway, though better aim would have helped. A lot.
  2. Nice, smarter than us, we got pounded in the unexpectedly stiff wind up out of Dean's, couldn't go anywhere, Guff did get one nice eater but we gave up after about 3 hours of big waves and terrible conditions... couldn't even make headway when we finally went back.
  3. Hey what's up man... no nothing I've heard of.
  4. If your fishing plans include Sunday at Taughannock you may want to think again. The park will be hopping and the road will be closed. I don't know if they close the park completely, it doesn't say, so it's unclear if you can launch or not. From the Ithaca Journal: "Motorists will be detoured temporarily Sunday as the Cayuga Lake Triathlon takes place at Taughannock Falls State Park. A detour will be in place from 7 a.m. to approximately noon Sunday as cyclists will be on state Route 89 from Taughannock Falls State Park to county Road 139 in Sheldrake. The detour will be on Route 89 between Gorge Road and Cayuga View Road. Motorists are advised to choose an alternate route."
  5. oops!
  6. Very kind of you Al but probably not true! We'll find some fish... bites, well that's up to them. J withey, first spot I'd look is north of the park in front of Aurora, if that doesn't work you can try over near Dean's, fish the northern shelf drop-off anywhere you see bait, or start heading south
  7. Congrats everyone, good fishing!
  8. Very nice, sounds like a blast! That's a lot of fish in a week. Gotta make some friends that are into this sort of thing, what's the smallest group size that's economically doable for a trip like this or elsewhere in Canada? 4? Any fewer and I can see costs going up a lot. Awesome trip, thanks for sharing!
  9. That one's a goldfish for sure. There's a bunch in Cayuga. I get them all the time carp fishing in the spring, along with the rudd. There's some goldfish in there that have lost their golden color too. They breed and eventually it "washes" out. Edit: all the time may be a stretch but a couple to half-dozen every year
  10. Those orange fish are definitely better than the pale ones, at least something is better. Too bad the fishing is down. Good numbers was the main reason to make the trip from here. That was a day to remember! Great fun, I'll never forget that trip, thanks. Good thing on the walleye trip! That'll be fun, enjoy it, I haven't been out on Cayuga much as I've been learning walleye the last few years. A few trips here and there. Going out this week someday, have to dodge the rain for a change.
  11. Ah gotcha. Huh I wonder why... thanks for the info! Great video
  12. Interesting... definitely here some days you can't reel fast enough. But some days a slow retrieve is better. My question then is, do they chase at lower speeds? Or are you getting them only on or near the bottom? In other words does the straight drop and (slow) retrieve work better some days vs. jigging the bottom for long periods. If that makes sense.
  13. Pete awesome video! Excellent work! I've got to try jigging Ontario. I've also tried jigging alewives (or parts of them!) without much success. Too much work to try further. Tg8, it really depends on the day... some days dropping and straight retrieve works best, some days jigging the bottom works best. Adjust based on what you see on the FF, if the fish are chasing on the fishfinder do the retrieve more but if they won't move more than a few feet keep it on the bottom.
  14. That's great, always fun getting someone into fish on the first trip!
  15. I can see why leadcore is preferred there. Interesting place. I'd probably bait fish it over trolling, it might take an hour to circle the whole lake (if you go slow) and you'd just be going in circles. Small but deep, almost no weeds. Very clear, spring fed. Seems very low on the productivity scale but what fish do survive probably get big... I saw that huge rainbow. I bet small lakers are the main forage for predators in there. There were some bass around but with zero cover other than docks I can't imagine many.
  16. Oops forgot about the pic, here it is. I tie a loop in 50 lb. PowerPro about 4" long, thread it through the hook (usually a Gamakatsu Octopus 2, though I have bent/broken them, some may prefer a stouter hook), and over so it's a loop connection, then the same thing around the jig post. Then I thread it through the plastic body once or twice on the way to the tail. Do it on the top so the line and hook don't interfere wit the tail action, actually I'd prefer the one in the pic to be 1/4"-3/8" longer so the hooks trails the tail a little further. You can easily change the plastic or add or remove the stinger with this system. The only drawback I've found is that the loop connection at the post will occasionally come off when handling a fish. It doesn't happen when fishing or fighting a fish but the thrashing in the net will once in a while open that loop up and it may come off and slide up the line a little. Just something to look for after unhooking the fish. It's never cost me a fish, when they're on there the tension means it never comes loose. And I like the easy on-off aspect. Anyway, it's how I do it, I'm sure there are plenty of other ways. I also tie up a bunch beforehand so they're ready to go. To me the hardest part is getting the length right, but you can also adjust the length of the plastic too. Al, overall how's the fishing been? I haven't seen any reports of those big days we used to have over there.
  17. Back out for 1.5 hrs in the canoe at dawn, couple more 12" and 13" lakers. 3/4 oz. jig albino tail shortened to 3" total. Nice ~10" bluegill off the dock. Done for the day. Seeing that rainbow was great though, really got my heart pounding! Nice camp lake.
  18. If you're using them so you reel it in like that neither should be releasing until you take it off... if you want it to release and slide back, use the black pin-less clip in the front and a ring on the back, no clip, so it slides when the front one pops loose. I used to do it this way but now prefer to do it like you are now, without releasing. Edited for clarity.
  19. Thanks Les, it's pretty over here. I haven't seen water this clear in the summer since Tahoe. Can see the jig easily down 30. Trying to downsize everything. Back out in a canoe for an hour. No hits but a real nice ~6-7 lb. rainbow followed my lure back to the boat.
  20. Spent 1/2 hr in a float tube so far and got one 12" laker in say 60 fow. Good start anyway
  21. So the deep spot is off the Chestnut Inn? Looks like it's closed now. Not sure if I can make it over there, I'll be up in the northeast corner visiting some family who rented a place for the week. Guess my current plan is head out towards the middle jigging along the way. Are there alewives in there or what kind of baitfish am I looking at? I'll report back even if I zero out.
  22. Hey all, I'll be at the north end of Oquaga Lake tomorrow and Thursday morning. Anyone ever fish there? I'm going to be limited to a float tube and a sit on top kayak that isn't a fishing rig. There isn't any public access so finding info online has been hard, but it sounds like there are some trout in there, maybe privately stocked rainbows? And native lakers... maybe I'll try the old float tube laker jigging. Can't even find a basic depth map though. Thanks for any pointers! Alec
  23. Ha fish bigger than the cooler is a good problem to have! Good average size too
  24. Good going Landshark! Nice to meet you, and others. Had a great time fishing mostly Sunday with Justin, thanks for having me. Some great food too with the BBQ bacon walleye and Wayne's pulled pork. Good food and good fishing, could only have been better if I were there all weekend.
  25. It's basically a perch rig but with little flies and what the package says I don't know why... a string of little lures on little leaders attached to a mainline, you put a relatively heavy (1 oz for me usually) weight on the end. Mine is made by P-Line and is hook size 10.I use it for getting alewives at night, I suppose you could do it during the day too but I never really tried, I usually do it from shore around here on Cayuga and that means night. Find a thick cloud and jig it sometimes they bite and sometimes you end up snagging them.
