  1. Our longtime friend and neighbor on two sides is a single shot kind of guy. Once in a blue moon two. The guys who lease the land on the third side, however, scare me all the time. Last year I was outside splitting wood and blam blam blam blam... he kept firing and kept getting closer and closer. Every year it's a war zone on that side.
  2. On Parsells? Love that place, go every time I'm in Rochester. Awesome sausages. Looks like a good haul.
  3. Gordon Lightfoot is playing at the State Theatre in Ithaca on Saturday if anyone is interested.
  4. Bigfoot, sounds like it may be too late for you as you've got a contract but there is Locust Lumber Company in Newfield we just sold a few trees to.
  5. I'm down in the Finger Lakes so can't really help with spots. Also never tried this late in the year! I'm guessing the river is colder than the lake so maybe try off one of the piers or somewhere in the lake itself. I have heard of one good fall spot but I've never tried it, it's not too close to Rochester so it may not be too helpful. I'll PM you though I don't think there are a lot of carp guys on this board.
  6. I use feed corn. Go buy a 50 lb. sack and you're set for a while. Cook it in water or add some strawberry jello if you like. Simmer for 1 hour and you're good to go. Stays on the hair or hook much better than canned and it's super cheap.
  7. Here you go... doesn't look like they've done anything as of the 29th. Should update it tomorrow I think. http://www.canals.ny.gov/waterlevels/netdata/cayuga-levels.pdf
  8. Yeah there used to be more activity about the FL streams, never a lot but it died out and I think everyone is happier for it. I used to post some on the older version of this site. I sent a PM. What and how are good questions. Anyway, still sounds like fun, did you measure it? Most people C+R but some guys take limits if they get them.
  9. It sounds like a lot of fun! But I think over the years we've found (and is site policy) it's generally frowned upon to post stream names, especially the smaller ones. A hundred people have now read this and the chances of those fish being there when you get out of work tomorrow are suddenly a lot less. Knowing the area I know exactly where those fish were from your description, and I'm not the only one. As for tactics, what do you want to know? Happy to help in this regard. Micro jigs are good, egg sacs are popular, all sorts of flies, even some spinners and spoons (with a single hook!) are used. Similar colors to lake fishing. Have fun out there but maybe only share with a few buddies... there isn't much room on most of the FL tribs and the numbers of fish aren't that high.
  10. Hey Al, hope it was a good day! That sounds great, I can probably find time next week, shoot me an email later this week or over the weekend or something.
  11. 6 lb. line for pike sounds light even with a leader. I like using 10-15 lb. braid. Can still cast pretty far. Fish over the weeds or just outside the weedline. Good luck Al! Have your tried the weedbeds near Sampson?
  12. I have a #8 Big Bite from LEM and love it. I don't do deer but I make a lot of pork and lamb sausage. If you really don't think you'll use it much you could get the countertop #8, it sounds like that's the one Total Chaos recommends. I did a lot of research and almost went with a #5 but I tend to play it "safe" and overbuy. They have the older version of the #5 Big Bite for a good deal.
  13. Your options are the marina on the southeast corner and the campground on the southeast corner. The marina is on the main lake but I've never launched there. The campground is on the pond and is fine. Both you pay a fee.
  14. Cleaned it up, looks great. Bores are shiny. Even some of the original case hardening still there. Chambers need a little work, they're the rustiest part but really not bad at all. Got some low pressure shells from RST Shells, from some reading it was recommended to use a lighter shell than modern ones. Just fired this gun in who knows how long. At least 50 years probably. Blam! It works. Next step is to get my neighbor and his skeet station involved. Might try for turkey with it but neither barrel is choked. A lot of fun firing this old shotgun!
  15. It's been a few years since I've fished over there but I'm a big fan of the Bomber Slab in that lake. It's got a shorter wider profile than most jigging spoons and is well suited to the smaller fish in Keuka.
  16. I am curious what the DEC guy meant about peak of the cycle? The gobies haven't been in here long, how do they know about any cycles yet? Wes the Asian carp they found in Ontario were grass carp and could have been escaped sterile fish (if we're lucky) but even if they were breeders the grass carp aren't too bad. It's the silver carp that jump and the bigheads are a problem also. I don't doubt they'll get here eventually but so far we're okay.
  17. I always figured I should have an Ithaca at some point, never even fired one yet though. This one was my great-grandfather's who had a farm near Philly. Be great to have it back in action! I'll update when I get it in working order. Thanks everyone that's a great start.
  18. Thanks guys! I wasn't looking for a full restoration but looking at some of the pics on Turnbull's site it might be worth it. I don't think it's too far gone but it's a supposedly a decent gun and from the first year of manufacturing. Edit: these pics lost a lot of quality when uploaded but I think it looks pretty good for sitting for ~50 years.
  19. I've recently acquired a 1910 12 ga. Sterlingworth SxS. It's in pretty good shape but I'd like to get it checked out somewhere before firing it. Is there anyone around the Ithaca area, or within about an hour drive, that deals with antique guns? Or just clean it and give it a shot? There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it but I don't think it's been fired in about 50 years. Barely any rust, a few tiny spots. I can do pics in a few hours if that would help. Thanks for any tips!
  20. We just gave ours away yesterday. It was an older unit that came with the house and we really didn't like it. Top feed. Other than the noise of the blower dealing with the pellets is still a pain in the butt. Slightly less work than burning wood but you still have to load it once or twice daily and you're left with all the plastic bags. One year we tried keeping the pallets outside but they got wet (and mice) despite two tarps. You have to carry all the bags into the house and they take up a lot of basement or garage space. I personally wouldn't recommend it for a main source of heat. Maybe for a backup or additional heat. I'm sure there are much nicer units available now but after using one we won't be getting another for any reason. Just my $0.02. Edit: we weren't using it for main heat either, only at night. Didn't like it even then.
  21. Thanks for posting that. Wow some real nice lakers there! Congrats guys!
  22. Oops yeah my post above doesn't really apply to the rainbows... never got one of those! A few browns though.
  23. I've gotten some salmon but I haven't tried in a few years. Never tried any insects for trout in the lake, all streamers. Winter and early spring are your best bet for fly fishing trout. Taughannock and AES are popular spots for shore guys but if you're in your boat try points, drop offs, and current breaks, even shallow bays which may be a degree or two warmer on a sunny day. April really loads the south end with nice fish and the lighthouse can be an excellent spot. Also in a boat, the other lighthouse and breakwall can be good. Depends on the year but the trout start heading deeper in early May and they're out of range until maybe late October, but then they have spawning on their minds. I suppose you could fish a sinking line into May but I never tried anything other than a sinking leader. Edit: added a little.
