Perch fishing has more angler days than any other species but the DEC fails to recognize it. Children love perch fishing as they can hold the line and do not sit around being bored while trolling. The DEC has really screwed up our perch fishing by limiting our access to minnows for bait. Perch relate to the bottom and the preferred water tempaerature. 80 foot is usually the maximum depth in summer months. The depleted oxygen in summer times cause them to raise up closer at times. Perch prefer mud bottoms rather than shale as more critters burrow in there. Little perch hide in weed beds and the big survivors roam freely. Use your fishfinder graph to find them before you set your anchor. Move every ten minutes till you find them. Keep your perch on ice in a cooler and you can keep on fishing and clean them tomorrow.

We have removed a lot of downriggers from our boats. Dipsey divers work fine and produce more fish. With the riggers out of the way, it is a lot easier to net a fish from the side of the boat rather than the transom mess. Line counter reels loaded with 30# braid get our lures out and away from the boat. Two dipseys on #3 settings for off the side and two on #1 settings are fine. Leadcore or dropweight lines on inline planers can add more sweep area if you need it. Good simple rod holders are all you need.

A TIG welder might be able to fix it, but why would you want to take a chance on an old boat that could crack again? In airplanes, there is a timeline for safe flying, the same goes for old boats. The internet has over 25,000 boats for sale.

Trickle chargers are bad for batterys as they will cook off the water. Get a 3 stage charger, I keep my battery on charge all year and no problems.

Very Important meeting re: future of Lake Onatrio

The "Power" Authority will power its way through this just like everything else they do. New York City needs lights for Broadway and could care less about us. -
One boat reported 60 perch in 60 foot out of Sturgeon Point. A hundred boats reported 0's everywhere else. The surface temperatures in 75 foot of water were 66 degrees Friday. There is an algae bloom going on now and the bait nust feeding in the surface waters, and the perch must be up there. We need a good blow to return the lake to normal action. In 65 foot, the bait clouds on the bottom, are 30 foot high but no bites there. Walleye are 20 to 50 foot down suspended and the big breeders are sitting on the bottom. if I was to go out today, I would try out of Sturgeon point Marina.

Make sure the battery you buy matches what your electric motor needs. Undersized batterys will die early in your day.

When changing packing, change all of it, do not add a ring. This will spread the wear on the shaft over evenly and you will not score your shaft if it is too tight. Best to pull the boat out and do it or better yet repack before launching in the spring. Old hard packing can cost you a shaft.

Boats run at higher RPM's longer than automobile engines. They are not used in freezing weather hardly. So high viscosity oils are needed and recomended.

According to a study published in In Fishermen Magazine this month, perch are the most sought after fish. Although slightly more fellows fish for walleye, perch fishermen put in more time and effort. Let us hope the regulators do not pick up on this and try to make more rules to increase their income.

Money is the cause of the accident and will be the result of the Court Actions from it. Some days you have to just wait and sit, not take chances for the money. -
Charter Boat hits a pier in Manistee, MI, one dead

A couple rules to be reviewed are USCG Navigation Rules 6, simply, proper posting of a lookout, radar plotting procedures, visibility, such as fog, being able to stop completely in less than half the visibility distance and use and obervation of fog signals, see also Rule 19. All Charter Boats are required to have a copy of the "Navigation Rules" on board their boat. -
Heavy fog contributed to a collision with a pier resulting in the death of a 55 year old passenger.

Last year on this date we caught 135 perch. This year 0, that's fishing.

Wilson State Park closing monday!!!!!!!!!!!

We need a governor who will appoint Parks and DEC commisioners that care about where the money comes from to run their departments. These appointed lackeys are stealing our funds to run other programs that our moneys were not dedicated for. Parks and DEC funds do not come from income and sales taxes, but from our admission and license fees. The state still makes out from the payroll and sales taxes from the employees. -
Wilson State Park closing monday!!!!!!!!!!!

For decades Woodlawn Beach was used by the public and there was no government resources or finances spent to operate it. People just used it. Garbage, dead fish, steel plant orange water, drownings, etc. Then the state takes over, spends a ton of our money, we can not launch our boats, no swimming days, lifeguards, Park Police, and fees. Result was less usage and now we will be arrested for using something that the public used for decades without the beaurocrats operating it. More people drown in swimming pools than drowned in the lake swimming without lifeguards. Court fees will go to the state for every arrest the Park Police make for trespassing. And now we will have to burn up a lot of gasoline to travel twenty miles further, each way, to the nearest public beach. The goofs in Albany should have their pensions forfeited for this act. -
Here is a source of radial trailer tires that will fit your boat. http://www.maxxis.com

To save money, I replaced my trim switch with a three way switch on the dash. Up, off and Down positions with wires extended to reach the dash. It has worked well for five years now.

There was a picture of a 120 pound King caught in a fish trap in 1910 at Ketchikan , Alaska. Anything is possible.
-
I also saw a 40#er come off the pier at Olcott. The biggest fish will concentrate in the streams in September, not the lake. What those crick fishermen use is probably plugs like Wiggle Warts or Hot n Tots like they use for river Kings in Alaska.
-
Maybe you do not have to carry so much gasoline in the boat. About 7.5 pounds per gallon, 50 gallons would take off 350 pounds.
-
I warched a 72 pound King taken on the Kenai by a fellow fishing from the bank. After a half hour he jumped in up to his waist and lifted the fish onto theshore. No, he did not lift it and it was the greatest catch I ever saw. He did not have a boat to chase it down.

The Army Corps reports that Lake Superior dropped 10 inches last month when it should have risen from the snowmelt. A drought is blamed and since water flows downhill we will not see things getting better. Dredging and new ramps, docks may be our only hope.
