  1. The problem is they claim there is VHS in the Great Lakes, so if it is there already, why penalize us by denying us the use of bait from the Lake and forcing us to import foreign bait from out of state. There could be a bigger prolbem from out of state bait. If the majority of jurisdictions on Lake Erie allow the transportation of emerald shiners within a defined zone, why can not the New York DEC go along. The other states and Ontario follow the Federal guidelines, why can not New York do so?
  2. Surge brakes are being outlawed in Ohio and other states like NC are really hammering Yankees without trailer brakes meeting their higher standards. Probably a good idea when you upgrade your rigs to equip them with electric brake systems.
  3. Meetings with the DEC in NYS resulted in no change in regulations. I can not understand their obstinacy in having the same regulations as the other jurisdictions on the great Lakes. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link and New York's rules will fail if the other links fail. Anyway, it looks like New York fishermen will have to suffer with the regulations in pace as we have, the unharvested perch and other species will continue to feed on the fry and fingerlings of walleye and bass that depend on a balanced harvest to survive.
  4. My 50 khz shows up better suspended fish with its wider cone view. My 200 khz shows up perch on the bottom when I set the upper and lower limits in a 10 foot window. DF and color are something Ishould have done years ago.
  5. Sometimes an automotive battery is used in boat. It will start the boat, but after a little pounding on the lake, the cells fail. A marine battery has stronger construction to handle the pounding in a boat. Never use your car battery in a boat, both your boat and car will not start then.
  6. There is something coming out on inboard engines requiring new models to have a catalytic converter and most manufacturers are only going to sell outboards.
  7. You be careful, there is a thing about taking up arms against the government.
  8. The governor did look at the tax money coming in and it is going out faster than it is coming in. Common sense tells the tax eaters to bring in some revenues or you will be the first to be cut when the checks start bouncing. Be careful out there, these are dangerous times.
  9. When you set your parking brake, you lock up the rear wheels. Sliding the boat off the trailer, the weight transfers to the rear of the trailer from the front hitch and raises the rear wheels to a point they have no traction and the whole rig goes down the ramp. Usually the boat floats off the trailer and thr rear wheels grab but this looks like a panic and the engine stalled when the exhaust went under water. Chocking the front wheels would help, having a person hold down the foot brakes would help and setting the transfer case to 4 wheel low would help. Flushing and changing the engine, transmission, transfer case and pumpkins oil is next sooner than later. I have seen this happen more than once.
  10. I filled two six gallon plastic tanks with e-10 gasoline last September. Tha vents were closed and I did not add any stabilizer. My boat ran well with the old gasoline this year. I think the sealing of the vents preventing the exchange of moist air and the condensation of water with the fuel. Tthe plastic tanks have the ability to flex with pressure from the air temperature changes. One time last summer, I forgot to open the vent and the motor stopped. The plastic tank shrank down to half its size, but when I opened the vent, it quickly popped back to its original shape. Another thing is to only put 6 gallons of gasoline in the empty tank because you need room for expansion due to temperature change. Do not "top them off" as this is bad and you will argue with the gas station attendant that their pumps are wrong and you are being cheated because you put 7 gallons of gas in a 6 gallon tank.
  11. I have had all types of aluminum and I would reccomend a welded aluminum boat like a used Crestliner simply because they use a heavier gauge metal and no rivet problems. For price comparisons, try Boatrader.com
  12. Check the owner's manual to see if 89 Octane rating fuel is needed, if it is, then 87 Octane will cause damage.
  13. When the floor wood gets punky or soft, you have to pull off the carpet and any attachments like seats and doors. The old wood is usually screwed down to the frames. New wood ,3/4 inch is best will last for quite a while, but you can use expensive marine plywood or chemically treated plywood if you wish. Cabela's, West Marine sells the carpet or vinyl flooring and glue. Use the old boards for templates. Have fun.
  14. Is there a small probe that will give you the water temperature, and even better the dissolved oxygen levels of the water the probe is set at? I really do not care about the speed. My cable blowback shows me how fast I am travelling.
  15. You in New York State, cannot transport or use bait fish anywhere unless they are certified VHS free and you hold a 7 day receipt for them. Locally caught bait fish can be used in the same waters they originated but not transported in a motor vehicle. I am not a lawyer, so read the rulebooks yourself or call the DEC oor an explanation. Other states and provinces have better regulations but we are stuck with these rules from Albany. The point is a chain is only as strong as its weakest link and our regulations should restrict us the same as other jurisdictions. Certified bait from states like Arkansas or Wisconsin are expensive, hurt the local economy and are not as effective as these foreign invader baits being brought here from out of state.
  16. When you crank over your engine, you may be getting a low voltage signal to your electronics that shut them down to protect them. Your engine starting battery may be getting weak.
  17. My 9.9 Honda brought me home at 6.5 knots from 10 miles out.
  18. The problem is with some desk jockey, not the boat crews. They place the demands that big numbers be posted and the boat crews want to get the boat checks done as quickly as possible. Since the economic conditions went down the tank in New York, have you noticed all the traffic tickets being issued to bring in revenues by soaking the traveling public. The state has ordered all police to increase their traffic ticket count.
  19. Look some industrialist is looking for a scheme to sell some of his products. He gets some Washington politicos, who he has in his pocket, to come up with an issue, like terrrorists attacking America. They sell to the taxpayers a bunch of high priced boats. They hire and train some former workers whose jobs were outsourced to offshore to save on Medicare and Social Security costs. Out go the boats and nothing happens. Some beancounter complains, so the boys have to start coming up with numbers showing the boats checked. And you are the next one checked.
  20. According to Darcy Reger, Cleveland Plain Dealer Ohio Outdoors column, the state of Ohio in order to comply with the Federal VHS requirements, changed its bait regulations to allow only Lake Erie Emerald shiners to be sold from dealers north of a line from US 6 to I 90 for use only in Lake Erie. If only New York would let us have similar regulations here. Our failure to harvest a proper amount of yellow perch will create a collapse of recruitment of other species such as walleye and bass.
  21. Even if you have the "right of way" you are still required by law to take action to avoid damage. So reel in your lines and the courts will not have to deal with your failure to mitigate damage.
  22. Mercruiser engines require 89 octane fuel.
  23. I do not recomend "lubing the wheel studs". You do not want lug nuts loosening up and wobbling or losing the wheels.
  24. I do not see any rust. Fix your numbers, that is what an aluminum boat is for, it does not deteriorate. Use the money to buy something important, like more lures or a better fishfinder.
  25. Do not use Pine Sol. It contains phenols which ruin the taste of fish if you eat them.
