Time for response is critical so check out where your tow boat will respond from.

Lake Superior is not expected to freeze over this winter now. Every day of warm weather is one less day of freezing conditions. High winds again this weekend caused a lot of shoreline damage along with heavy rains washing debris from rivers and streams into the lake. Extra care will be needed to safely operate your boat this spring. A lot of ice fishing huts are on display now, while a couple years ago the winter supply was completely sold out nationwide.

That is what I said. In the streams till spawning. After 45 degrees they spawn, then leave for the lake till next fall when the streams cool down at night from summer high temperatures. The salmon return for their spawning and the rainbows are with them. It could be possible to construct an additional bypass canal around Montreal to supplement the needed flow to control Lake Ontario’s high levels. Well they could deepen or widen the river to allow greater flow rates. Charleston, SC shipping channel is now being deepened to 54 foot depth to allow Panamax ships entry to that port.

Lake Trout along with Brown Trout are fall spawners. They move shallow in the fall.

I always worried what would happen if I overturned wearing waders in nearby deep water. The belt would trap air and becoming upside down in the water.Even a life preserver may not work.

The Bar fishing turns on best when the ice fields on Lake Erie melt off. Then warm waters from western Ohio waters are blown down to the Buffalo end and turn the cold Lake Ontario waters temperatures up. Plankton accompanies the warmer water, bait closes in and the good fishing begins there. Study the Lake Ontario surface water temperatures all along the south shore in the spring and concentrate there. You may fish in as little as ten foot of water then. Colored water on the surface holds fish in the shade there.

Yesterday at noon time, Lake Erie water level was flowing over the Black Rock Breakwater. The normal level is about three feet lower so you can assume the flow into Lake Ontario has increased. The winds were not that high to create a seiche event but it may have been an air pressure differential from western Lake Erie near Toledo. One year the Corps of Engineers sent a water speed instrument off various areas of the Peace Bridge. It measured the highest flow speed at 8 MPH. Consider the volume of water 3 foot high and a mile across travelling at eight miles per hour and think of its additional effect on the level of Lake Ontario. Maybe the the outflow in the Seaway controls can not handle the situation as it is now.

Snow melt has minor considerations to lake levels. It is warm ocean temperatures and rainfall resulting that caused our higher lake levels.

Look we have to "live with it" the conditions on the lake now. Improve the boat ramps and docks that float will allow lake access. Then we can go fishing. Property and home owners made their decision to buy onto the waterfront have to make their own decisions whether to improve their shore or just wait till the lower water levels return.

When we are perch fishing with minnows, one rod per person is the best producer. Changing bait lost, resetting other lines and missing too many hits wastes bait and time. Holding a rod in your hand is better than watching for a bite on other rods. Less bait under your boat really does not hold schools of perch around. Just less hits on the hand held rod. Three rods in the water per person screws up the catch rates of other people in the boat.
