  1. The Mountain lakes I Alaska are formed from snow and glacier melt. They are nutrient free unlike our farm streams and lakes. The carcasses of the dead sockeyes are the feed for the next generation. The eggs from the chinook, coho, pinks and dog salmon are feed for the Steelhead, dolly varden trout and others. I watched the young trout leap out of the water and eat Mosquitoes . Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  2. In Alaska possession of eggs is a violation if they are found in your person or in your boat. This will be the next step to limit access to the stream fishery. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  3. The premise of “catch and release” is good for the fishery will result in a why stock the fish in the first place? Resolve yourself that the fish keepers help pay for the stocking program. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  4. Sockeye salmon reproduction is dependent on dead salmon becoming food for the hatch of their eggs. A dead Rainbow Trout in the stream or taken home is still a dead salmon. There is things like this on the streams and just be prepared to handle it. Hatchery production is the key to our fishing, not stream production. This is a financial deal, not Mother Nature.
  5. The reason for our successful fishery programs is the sale of fishing licenses and the money generated from out of state anglers. Keep cutting fish limits and less fishermen will be around and then less fish will be around. These so called “do gooders” will do more harm than we need. 6. The life jacket rule is just not for life saving but body recovery. Think of all the search hours saved. Also your survivors benefits are delayed till the body is recovered . This could be months or forever. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  7. Fishing for salmon and trout in Alaska you must use artificials but the catching is still snagging. A 3X heavy hook is used that goes to near the bottom of the stream. Within three foot of the feathered hook waves is a rubber sleeved sinker that keeps the fly? and the leader in the current near the the bottom. Migrating salmon take the leader in its mouth as they travel upstream and the hook catches in the mouth area. Since the salmon do not feed they are taken in an “artificials only” manner. Still they are snagged and this is accepted by the sport fishing community. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  8. The bags are also used for slow drifting and bottom bouncing in strong winds. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  9. There is still a lot of ice on Lake Erie causing icy water to flow down the Niagara River. As soon as the ice is gone warmer water from the Western Basin will arrive and the fishing on the Bar will resume. Warmer water will arrive from the Welland Canal will arrive first.
  10. Yes, excellent, pricey but I have won two of them. Probably you can shave with them.
  11. Water temperatures cause a migration of fish in lakes. As the generally prevailing SW winds stack warm waters on the Eastern Basin the cold water seeking salmon and their forage move to the deeper colder waters. From the Burlington Bay Bridge in August Blue water converged Green waters a couple miles offshore. The blue waters were 48 degrees on he surface and the green waters were 72 degrees. The SW winds blew the warm waters to the east and the colder waters waters up welled to the surface. Any way a half mile into the green waters, 50 foot down, were all the fish moved from the colder water and hiding from the sun. We had the greatest day fishing the horde of fish in that wind driven session.

  14. I took a walleye that was tagged 30 days previous on the Feather River in Michigan off Lake Erie. It traveled to Van Buren Point in Lake Erie where I caught it. 30 days to travel almost three hundred miles. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  15. It is water temperatures you need to be aware of. Warm water attracts bait and that is where the fish accumulate . Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  16. It is numbers fishing that make the system work. Help everyone is a good thing. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  17. If your game is to catch large fish, then releasing large fish increases your opportunity to catch an even larger fish. It is safer to take smaller fish home to eat as they should have less contaminants. Removing smaller fish from the biomass supports a better forage base for the surviving fish. 21. Yes, the ice bridge below the falls will eventually come free and flow down river. The ice will break up in the rapids but it may ruin your day. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  22. Is that maximum length? If it is we will come up with some monster rainbows then. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  23. As soon as the rainbows spawn out, they go on the feed again to fill their empty bellies. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
