  1. Small boats like fourteen footers will find themselves endangered by faulty published wave heights.
  2. My dog liked to stand on the bow and enjoy the breeze.A wave bounced him forward and he passed under the boat. I feared the motor propeller hit him. He popped up ok but that was his last trip.
  3. The motion of the buoy does not receive the full lift and fall of the elevation of the buoy wave as it passes through quickly.
  4. Always consider the buoy motion does not equal the rise and fall of the waves. Add at least another foot for wave heights. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  5. Lake Erie develops "dead Water Zones" due to low dissolved oxygen levels in warm late summer times. You must fish just above the dead water zone for suspended fish like Lake Trout, Perch and Walleye. Turnovers change these areas. Cold nights starting in late August flow colder stream flows into the lake bring the fish closer to shore.
  6. Try testing your old flares. I found they would not open up where you twist the end cap. Do not depend on the hand held flares if you can not open them up. Why they are approved is dangerous.
  7. The bigger threat to the walleye spawn success is the unharvested perch that thrive on the walleye fry and fingerlings. To properly manage the stewardship of our fishery is a balance of the harvest numbers. The worship of large walleyes as the preferred target results in mismanagement of our fishery.
  8. The USA record Lake Erie LakeTrout was taken by Jesse Wykstra on 8/9/2003. It weighed in at 41 pounds 8 ounces and was measured 42.75 inches long. It was caught on a Northern King spoon in Chautauqua County waters. Probably Barcelona or Dunkirk Harbors was the launch site. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  9. I fished out of Ketchikan and Homer Alaska. Twice a day tides raise the water levels up to thirty feet each time. All the docks and ramps work all day and night. What is wrong with our Parks people who can not figure things out?
  10. With sixty mile per hour winds predicted soon expect that the Lake Erie ice field will move to the ice boom and blow over it to fill the Niagara River with ice and cold water.
  11. Off that area of the lake the deepest depth is 210 feet of water off Long Point in Ontario. During warm water summer lake temperature conditions Lake trout migrate there to feed on smelt and alewife. Trolling spoons near the bottom in areas of one hundred foot of water seem to be best for lakers. Barcelona Harbor in New York is also good for lake trout.
  12. This weekend the Buffalo News reported Erie County fishing license sales in Erie County 2016-2017 were 105,747 issued. Niagara County had 33,167 licenses issued. Money spent in New York hunting and fishing in 2011 was $4.95 billion. Yet we can not find the money to operate trailer boat ramps on Lake Ontario due to fluctuating water levels. Something smells in Albany.
  13. Most media reports justify development from incoming tourist dollars. We have money for more hotels and other developing projects. Yet most fishing tourist dollars come from trailer boaters who want to access the fishing opportunities we are blessed with. Our marinas are full of yachts and sailboats. The trailer boaters are forgotten and we suffer with boat ramps that were developed generations ago. New boat ramp users are the thousands of personal watercraft sold to our younger generation and we have now gridlock conditions at most boat ramps on weekends when family use is curtailed from unreasonable launch and retrieval times. Do not question where the money will come from. New York State boating sales taxes and registration fees disappear in that black hole called Albany. Open your eyes and mouth and let us do something to end this political dysfunction.
  14. Ice is on the south shore off Hamburg where open water is a half mile off shore. The open water is over a mile off shore the Town of Evans. This means warmer water out of the Niagara River and Welland Canal systems.
  15. Albany is rushing to complete its overdue budget so nothing will happen again soon.
  16. Albany found five million dollars for snowmobile trail maintenance but cannot find money for boat ramps.
  17. The State of New York receives millions of dollars annually from sales and registration fees from trailer boats. Also fuel taxes, outfitting the boats with necessary equipment sales taxes, and its Power Authority revenues yet does very little to support this issue. Our representatives in Albany are very inconsiderate at this revenue source with their non actions.
  18. You can receive interference from one hundred foot away from another boat using the same frequency. Disable the sonar frequency on the unit causing the problem. You can go to “settings” to find the option to “off” the sonar setting usually. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  19. Surface water temperatures are varied by wind flow direction, strength along with sun periods. Stream flows can raise or lower surface water temperatures. Algae blooms are greatest on the surface from 55 to 65 degrees F. That is your prime water depth to fish at. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  20. One soap to never use on your boat is “pine sol”. It contains phenol which taints the flavor of the fish. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  21. Placing a fish on a stringer or keeping it in a live well subjects the fish to warm surface water that hasten deterioration of the flesh, even if the fish is still alive. Ice or a freezer is the best way to keep the fish safe. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  22. When a body be it fish or human dies the antibodies for your immune system die also. Immediately bad germs increase and spoilage begins. After bleeding out the fish it should be eviscerated clean , then all fluids flushed out. Place the fish on a bed of ice so any fluids are kept below the fish. Then cover the fish in ice. That is the best you can do on your boat. The bleeding allows the flesh to become white during cooking. Most important is the sanitizing your cooler, cutting board, knives and packaging material. Soap will remove blood, gurry and slime. Chlorine based solution will kill harmful bacteria. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
