Back in the late 1950's and 1960's Lake Erie was considered dead. It was not dead, just dominated by a foreign invader called smelt. These little critters consumed the fry and fingerlings of the blue pike, lake trout, whitefish, ciscoes and cold water fish. The blame landed on if it could happen was commercial fishing. In 1964 the Ontario commercial fishing industry began trawling and shipping the smelt to Asian markets. We started stocking Coho salmon here and the smelt became under controlled conditions. The perch and walleyes, bass began to return to the greatest fishery for food fish on the lake. Sportfishing groups called for walleye stocking and the biologists called it futile. The alewife is another saltwater invader and it and the smelt dominated Lake Ontario then. Due to high contaminant levels, they were termed unsafe for human consumption . The only control available to keep the beaches clean of alewives was the salmon and trout stocking programs. This created sportfishing interest today and we have pressure on the the educated fishery managers to increase the salmon stocking numbers. One group has logical conclusions fighting against money chasing interests. There you go. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

The USCG was all diesel when I served on their utility boats. Today most of the small boats are gasoline outboards since they are a lot faster. The fastest diesel was a thirty foot fiberglass and it did thirty knots. Now their triple outboards can hit seventy MPH. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

The ships lost in the storm were top loaded with extra anti aircraft weapons during wartime and their stability was compromised. Halsey was blamed the blame should have been on the officers who added the weapons on deck. I Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

A few weeks ago, we had a triple water spout off Point Breeze here on Lake Erie. They disappeared as I tried to get my phone camera set. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

More people died in the evacuation than the last hurricane in Houston. Roads are gridlocked and gasoline is unavailable in Florida now. This could be another government screwup counting on evacuations as the answer. I75 was moving at 8 mph today at noon in Alabama and things really have not started. The drive from Fort Meyers took 13 hours today for a friend trying to get out. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

Operate in high seas at six mph. You will get there, it just takes longer. Your back and boat will last more longer. Boat dealers sell high speed engines for profit, not safety. Several times this year we came in from six miles out in over an hours time but there was no pounding hurting backs or loose rivets. Take care of your boat, get used used to traveling slower. The North Pacific Commercial salmon trollers have a drain box on the stern of their boats to drain the blood away before they clean and ice their catch. They receive top dollar for their salmon with excellent handling of their catch. They bleed, clean and ice their catch as soon as it is landed. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -

The big box stores stock items used all over the USA. Not what is the hottest, newest lures used locally. The drive to local stores is well worth it for your fishing success. They will put you on what is happening now and save you money since you will have lures catching fish, not lures that catch fishermen and their wallets. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

Two US Navy destroyers were struck by oil tankers. Both were struck on their port side that shows a red light giving them the alleged right of way. It is nothing more than "ink on a piece of paper". You must do something to avoid collision with another vessel. The first question asked by the insurance company is " what did you do to avoid the accident?". Right of way is not the answer. Lake Erie water flowing over the Niagara Bar is rich in nutrients, plankton and phytoplankton that feed the forage bait fish that bring on the salmon and trout. The drop offs of the Bar hold a lot of fish. Wilson is twelve miles east of the river and afternoon winds back to Wilson are better to ride. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

Cabelas has a huge reel display, so pick them up and play around. Then choose what you like. All brands can be returned. That is what the local store is about. You never buy a pair of shoes without trying them on if you are smart.
