Prevailing strong SW winds stack the warm water at that end of the lake. At the west end at Hamilton the clear blue water is sometimes at 48 degrees due to an upwelling when the warm waters are blown East. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

On my recent visit to Clayton I noticed change in the harbor. Floating docks are going in everywhere to handle the changes in lake levels. I guess that is a response to IJC's dysfunction. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

The carcasses are food for the tiny critters at the bottom of the food chain. Imagine what happens if all the fish were removed from the lake if that would be possible. Salmon streams in Alaska require the carcasses to be placed back in the stream rather than landfill them. Millions of salmon spawn, die and become food for their offspring. Buoy wave height is different from true wave heights. As a wave passes the buoy does not rise or fall as the wave does not fully support the buoy. Always add a foot or two to the wave heights for a true reading. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

Last week with NE winds and six foot swells we took three walleye on Friday and nine walleye on Saturday east of the Cattaraugus Creek in around sixty eight foot of water. Other boats did well in eighty two foot with riggers set close to the bottom. The trip back to the dock took over an hour at six mph due to the pounding from the waves. A good pike wind though. When the waves came over the transom onto the deck, we called it over. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

The buoys float up and down but at less than the wave heights. Their readings are about a foot off the true wave heights. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

The understanding of the mid summer thermocline movements is a necessity of your fishing success. Warm surface waters flow with the wind and cold thermocline waters replace them. But the thermocline waters at this time of are dissolved oxygen deprived. The blue clear water is not where the fish are. They travel with the green algae colored water where the forage fish are. Just look for the green water now in the warm water conditions. The thermocline is like a fence and the mixing of the different temperatures stops. The warm surface water is enriched with oxygen by the whitecaps at this time of year. In inland lakes the thermocline may be as high as twenty eight feet and fishing deeper is useless. Many fish now run to marinas or weed beds to escape the sun. Sent from my iPhoness using Lake Ontario United

How about Bass Pro bought out Cabelas and they do not need another store to compete with the two stores nearby. Online sales are a major component of their marketing and stores are for hands on sales. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

The Kenai/Russian River " fly fishing" is not similar to your trout experience here. A 2X or 3X long shank hook is used to sink the fly close to the bottom. The bright colors are for the angler to observe the hook. The migrating salmon mouth the line with their large teeth then the hook sticks in the mouth. A sinker a couple feet above the hook ticks the bottom as it drifts in the current. This is where the line is kept close to the bottom and catches the fish. If you see whitecaps, you are your own weatherman, an on scene observer. Make your own decision on what you see, not some TV person. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United At this time, the warm waters make their own weather and it has nothing to do with on shore weather .

Adding another battery in the transom area with this additional kicker engine hanging on the transom can cause a dangerous condition upsetting the designed balance of the boat. Think of a wave coming over the transom. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

Using a spray gun subjects you to a DEC violation unless you have an approved spray booth. A roller or brush is safer. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

Lake Ontario Fisheries History Lesson
jimski2 replied to RUNNIN REBEL's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Where is the reference to the smelt who decimated the blue pike, lake trout, whitefish and ciscoe fry and fingerlings. Their biomass was bigger than the alewife. They did not have the massive dieoffs that caused public attention but caused the extinction of many cold water species in the Great Lakes. The simple answer back then was commercial fishing caused the loss of these species. But the Canadian commercial fishing community adapted to trawlers that harvested the smelt and shipped them to Asian markets mainly. When the controls on the smelt biomass started in the 1960's walleyes, perch and bass numbers increased. The concerns of contaminants such as PCB's stopped the harvest of food fish in Lake Ontario and the alewife and smelt populations were noted and then the salmon programs began. Today there is a narrow window of salmon stocking numbers that is being implemented to prevent a disaster such as Lake Huron experienced. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -

Looking for an RV and tent site close to a marina

Four mile creek campground east of Fort Niagara boat ramps is nice. Olcott has a campground across the road from the marina. Use your internet to search for more sites. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -
After years of a winch, then electric winches, I chose an electric 11,500 pound winch. It can lift my boat, trailer and truck vertically into the air. It does not strain pulling my 18 foot aluminum outboard onto the trailer. A few dollars more and it should be the last winch I will need to install.

Under water paint on an aluminum hull should have an etching primere for aluminum over bare aluminum. An underwater primer, then anti fouling paint for aluminum that does not contain copper. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
