  1. Big box store buyers spend little time in the area and are unfamiliar with our wants. What they buy is for a nation wide market and local popular lures usually disappear quickly. USA manufacturers are unable to fill the huge orders and have to ship their production to low wage and low tax areas like China. But high ticket items are there for you like rods, reels, fishing line, electronics, etc. checkout lines are generally fine except when sales like door busters or grand opening days occur. By the way fishing tackle is only about 12 per cent of store sales. Clothing is fifty per cent of the store sales. Men are attracted there but the women are the big spenders. This is what the real world is about. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  2. Minimum wage part time employees are tough to hold onto a job especially if their main interests are fishing and hunting. The big box stores have catalogues and web sites where all their items are available. Some companies have 600,000 items in stock but their outlet stores will only carry 150,000 items to satisfy local demands. Check out the websites for your wishes, save shipping charges by picking them up at your store or save your gasoline and drive time by having them shipped direct to you. 3. Fish jumping out of the water from a passing. boat have been reported in Lake Erie for a couple years now. There has been no official confirmation yet. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  4. Pine sol has a chemical that will taint the taste of fish when you eat them. Be careful when using it. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  5. The gill net used was one having a one inch stretch mesh. It was very selective in taking alewife. You will probably be considered as raping the alewife population and shunned by neighbors. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  6. Why is using wire better than braid? Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  7. The "right of way" rules are now criticized because a smaller, faster, more maneuverable vessel failed to take an action to avoid the collision. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United This may have been an act of war since the Philippine leadership is acting undemocratic now.
  8. There is a secret launch at the Power Authority property south of their grain elevator. It has been used all year in the river but access is not publicized. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  9. Steering with a kicker engine alone will be difficult when turning into the wind. The main engine lower housing is an auxiliary steering rudder and gives you better control . The Panther Z bar system is all right and does not suffer the EZ Steering disabled problem such as when working over the stern to reconnect it. Twice I lost the EZ Steer bar and ended spending big bucks to replace it. A good trick is to slide some foam tubing over the tube to allow it to float after you drop it in the water. 10. A three way valve works without sucking air from another outboard connector. A tee connector really does not work if one engine is shut down. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  11. In Alaska king salmon catches are required to be logged on your permit upon removal from the water. Then your single line is put down and you ride the boat for the rest of the trip. Imagine if the same regulation was imposed here and how it would effect the charter boat industry. Some do Gooder will impose using bait for fishing and how will you like that. It is easy to enact regulations for "conservation" alleged purposes. Deer hunting is for control of deer populations, not antler points, yet we see attempts to add restrictions by "sportsmen" to add more restrictions to deer hunting. Our professional biologists , for their status, avoid giving their opinion on political views since it could lower license revenue sales, not wildlife considerations. 12. The "sin" here is he did it for money, not for feeding his family in a legal manner. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  13. Not mentioned or considered is the rise in sea levels worldwide that is causing flooding in Montreal where the outflow of Lake Ontario is being restricted. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  14. Hunting in farm corn and grain fields is similar but not illegal. Food plots are everywhere to attract game for hunting. The need is to keep deer populations under somewhat control since posting property creates sanctuaries that reduce harvest numbers. Everyone has their personal thoughts that conflict with others but politicians pass regulations that are popular for their reelection needs. The loss of hunting opportunities and harvest regulations are not conducive to good fish and wildlife management. Never do you read of the automobile and deer collisions that are a result of hunting regulations. The duck hunters have limited opportunities for success and they support Conservation and wildlife controls but now are considered criminals. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  15. The NFTA has a pile of floating docks at their pier in Buffalo. They were from the Small Boat Harbor which now has new docks. If the high water event is going to last all season, these unused floating docks could be used. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  16. The control is for the minimum and daytime flow over the falls. What goes through the Hydro plants is all they can get. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  17. All plastic deteriorates with time. In a couple hundred years it will be dust so twenty year old fiberglass will be deteriorating pretty soon, so if you expect to operate an old boat for twenty years or more, you are looking at a lot of problems. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  18. Also to be considered is Ontario Hydro opened their new huge tunnel under the city of Niagara Falls, ON for their power production and was this added flow around the Falls considered in the computers that predict water levels? Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  19. I would like to add a flasher with a rubber squid lure also was used when the herring was used. The flasher attracted salmon to all the lures. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  20. My 90 hp Evinrude is now 25 years old and ran like New yesterday. It needs a set of spark plugs a couple times a year and I can change them in five minutes out on the lake. Still cheaper than a $15,000 new engine. Any way my 9.9 Honda kicker brings me back at 7 mph if I need it. The Honda idles down to less than one mph for bottom bouncing in 80 foot of water. If the old Evinrude gives out, I would possibly jerk it off and use the Honda. I do not care to travel above 25 mph so maybe a 70 hp four stroke will suffice then. 21. In Alaska and Puget Sound I always used frozen herring for salmon and halibut fishing. What we have here are sporting goods outlets that have invested a lot in lures and they need to move their inventory. Frozen herrings, smelt and alewives would work if you could find them but sales outlets are reluctant to have them compete with their investment. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  22. In order to mitigate financial losses for Lake Ontario businesses the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority has stockpiled their former docks, now unused, at their Port Terminal site. They could be used to restore launch ramp access across Lake Ontario sites. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  23. The chlorination of sedimentation basin water killed the algae which decayed and tainted the water. Sedimentation basins are now cleaned continuously instead of semi annually and activated carbon additional added to better tasting potable water. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  24. It would be easy to place the blame on Nature but our construction of the the Saint Lawrence Seaway project took nature out of blame. We enjoyed controlled lake levels for half a century now but bad things happened. The Chicago Ship Canal is the only other other outlet for the Great Lakes and it is monitored for Mississippi River flooding. Well we have to deal with changes every day and this is not the end of the world. Just a change. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  25. The surface area of the Lake Ontario drainage basin in the USA and even larger in Canada is probably larger than the Mississippi River basin. It floods almost annually but the flooding potential of Lake Ontario has been under estimated and ignored by our alleged educated officials and shore line residents. There you go.
