Lake Erie, the source of the water over the Bar, is again open water this years so we will not have to deal with a delayed warming of the Lake Ontario waters to 45 degrees, the desired fishing temperature. Also walleyes are being taken now in open waters in Ohio. The usually prevailing southwest winds will blow the warmer surface waters here earlier since there is no ice field to block them. Your boat and tackle should have been ready yesterday. By the way a local golf course is opening this weekend with the early spring conditions. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

Expecting some much needed fish please no...
jimski2 replied to Storm Warning II's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Check out the "Ohio Game Fishing" Lake Erie website for the latest action around Huron, Ohio. They are taking limits there now with large walleyes regularly. Also they have tips on how to set up your lines etc. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -
Your starting motor on your engine has a high amperage draw so make sure the cables are heavy enough for the greater distance. The pounding of your boat up front can damage the plates on your Marine Battery but they are designed for pounding but usually they are mounted in the stern for the shortest cable lengths. I changed by old X16 graph's ping settings and fish were marked at 100 foot and none below it. Then fish appeared all the way down to 250 foot. Graphs work at certain depths but not at all depths all the time. Many fish are not shown at times. Especially deeper depths. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

Question for those fishing from 19 foot and smaller boats
jimski2 replied to horsehunter's topic in This Old Boat
I removed my port side battery and mounted the kicker there. The kicker is easily started manually and can charge my battery. Never a problem with battery voltage for the riggers and electronics now. On my roller trailer the port side sometimes comes on favoring the port side due to the kicker there but not a problem for years now. -

Canadian waters border crossing rule change A bill in the Canadian Legislatures is being considered to allow USA boaters to cross into Canadian waters without reporting to their Customs Office as long as they do not anchor or land on shore. President Trump has not commented yet.

From the 2010 census data to July 2016, 846,669 persons have left New York State and only 367,719 persons were born or migrated here. By returning industrial jobs, not taxpayer funded jobs or commercial jobs supported by tax eating employees and retirees will we maintain at least the status quo. All the new President says is he recognizes our future failure but what happens is if he ls a lot of hot air.

Fairbanks, AK had -50 F. degrees last week. In a couple weeks that cold air is coming.

Hatchery fish have the advantage of winter growth from well water warmed by geothermal conditions that increased their metabolism and growth rates . Wild stream salmon only hatch their eggs in winter cold water that inhibits growth rates and they are more susceptible to predation in the open lake. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

The clear water is attributed to the mussels in the lake consuming the photo plankton. The results are the zoo plankton are not there to feed the forage fish and fry of all the fish. Last summer my treble hooks were full of mussels from the bottom in seventy five feet of water. These extreme abundance of mussels is changing the fish production capability of our lakes. I can see my minnows on the bottom in fifty five feet of water while I am fishing for perch. But some of the perch has engorged with mussels they have fed on. Adding more fertilizer is not the answer.

The fry, fingerlings and yearlings have to survive the onslaught of salmon, trout, pike, walleyes, yellow perch, white perch, white bass, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, crappies and numerous bird species beside cormorants. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

My Coast Guard boats in Alaska and Puget Sound used engine water heaters with variable speed motors to keep the compartments warm. Also we had a diesel fuel heater from a government contract for heating army tanks when the engines were shut down. Powered by the the boat batteries they held up for the night. Propane is forbidden on boats as it is heavier than air and settles in the bilges and low areas where it is an explosion hazard. Gasoline is just as bad in closed compartments. Gasoline engines running in the engine compartments self ventilate the area through its air intakes. Running the fans for five minutes makes it safer to start the engine as the sparks from the brushes on the starter motor are the source of gasoline boat explosions. I have seen two boats explode at fuel docks and the memory of the people flying through the air never leaves my mind. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

Your engine running takes the bilge fumes away as it sucks the air from the compartment. This brings in colder outside air for make up air. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

And people wonder why Bluefin Tuna are disappearing....
jimski2 replied to Sk8man's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Even legally taken salmon could be sold on the markets. The USA imports four billion to three trillion dollars of seafood annually depending on the information sources. There are tremendous markets here and legal controls are overwhelmed. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -
Wild spawned fish are smaller than hatchery raised fish and are subject to being a major food source from all the salmon, trout, walleye and other predators in the lake. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

The USA has size and quota limits. Unfortunately we are only a small part of the tuna's waters. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -
