Out of Ketchikan we were trolling for salmon with herring for bait. Our engine stopped and in two hundred foot of water our lines dropped to the bottom. A few minutes later I had on a huge fish we believe was a halibut. My level wind reel jammed to the side of the spool and the hundred pound test line broke with a large bang. From the docks there we would cast our spinning rods with lures on and every cast would take bass looking fish or dog fish sharks. You do not need a charter to get more action than you need. This was in 1963 and I had tears in my eyes when I flew out of Ketchikan. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

We have to account for the algae consumed by these critters and the effect they have on the population of alewife and other food chain fish such as emerald shiners. So where will our salmon programs be impacted by the loss of forage fish ? Lake Huron scientists are blaming the mussels now for their salmon program collapse. Will we start a mussel study now in Lake Ontario [emoji953]? Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

I have seen mussel shells regurgitated in the mouths of yellow perch. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

If you notice mussel shells on the beaches, a lot of them are cracked shards. I believe fish like perch crush them in their mouths and spit these shards out while consuming the flesh of the mussels, Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

It would have an effect on algae blooms. Which way? With all the power plant shutdowns and end of steel making here in New York the acid rain will slow down until the air from China gets here in a couple weeks. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

The scarcity of bait out on the mussel beds is what alarmed me. The SOL meetings I attended never discussed them. The Michigan fishing blogs especially on Lake Huron are really into the mussel problems unlike our New York agencies. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

There is now reports that the Province of Ontario will end stocking of salmon now since they feel New York is not complying with their agreement. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

Alewife numbers are a regular topic concerning chinook salmon stocking practices. Large fish need large forage as small forage results in more energy expended than yielded from the small minnows. Why are there low numbers of alewife being reported? The answer appears that too many salmon and lake trout being stocked and recruited from local streams. This past season we trolled for walleye in late summer conditions on Lake Erie in seventy five foot depths. Many times our hooks dragged bottom and they returned with mussels. Never have we expected to see them out there on the mud bottom, usually they attached to shale and rock structures. If the average depth of the lake is sixty foot, then this mussel biomass is huger than ever. These mussels feed on algae that is what alewife and emerald shiners survive on. Previously these depths in late summer were also home for yellow perch schools ten foot solid. This year only a few perch were found there. Bait schools are now absent there. Lake Huron scientists now come to the conclusion that mussels contributed to their salmon fishery collapse. Are we facing the same collapse here in New York waters? Do we have studies on the size and effects of the mussel infestation? This is a condition that needs to be studied. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

Chinook salmon filets were selling for $19.95 a pound yesterday at the Cleveland, OH West Side Market. Seventy salmon with a ten pound average filet weight yield are worth close to $14,000.00. There you go.

Michigan's experience with mussels is covered very well in the Michigan Sportsman web site. This year I have dragged mussels up from 75 foot of water. The size of this biomass is distressing. I failed to see pinhead emeralds this summer and that is scary. The crystal clear water is a sign of algae absence. We are at the point of a dead lake as when we failed to consider the smelt dominance of the late 1960's. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
