  1. The Niagara Bar is actually Lake Erie water that is nutrient rich and historically supported good walleye and even blue pike fishing. Most of the winning walleye contest winners come from the Bar.
  2. A styrofoam float tube on your steering tube will save your tube from sinking the next time. A two time loser made me scared of E Z steer connections.
  3. A connection to the main drive is awfully helpful by steering your boat in higher winds because it increases your rudder advantage with both units coordinating turning together. The off set of your kicker motor placement makes steering difficult.
  4. I think they mentioned this may be a five year fish.
  5. Today's issue has the the story with a photograph of the 97 pound 4 ounce salmon caught by Les Anderson on the Kenai River 31 years ago. adn.com Alaska Dispatch News
  6. Keith Kavajez and Gary Parsons use Moonshine jigging lures winning a $68K boat on Bay de Noc one year. Slow trolling speed, stop the boat and cast over the stern does the trick when fish are spotted on the sonar . No trolling needed, just hunt the fish down and catch them. Check out their web site " The next bite " I think. Shiver Minnow is the lure and the video is great.
  7. Two boats with hydraulic steering had fluid coming up on the dash through the fill plug. Also the steering has a slack motion as if air is in the system. Anyone have experience with this problem?
  8. Last year theUSA imported from Chile alone 295 million pounds of farmed salmon worth $1.16 billion dollars. Seeing all those dollars going over seas will consider a lot of doubt for our fisheries management.
  9. A six gallon tank takes six and a half gallons to top off. Do not do this as the half gallon is needed for expansion on a hot day or in direct sunlight.
  10. Marine batteries are different than automotive types. They take a pounding from the waves while automotive batteries will fail when they get slammed around.
  11. This time of year the fish are near the surface and flee from your boat as you move along. You will not see many fish below your boat. Side planers are necessary now, not long lines.
  12. Some states do not allow hydraulic brakes. Either electric or air operated trailer brakes only.
  13. A tee will allow a loss of suction in the fuel pump as the vent is open to the atmosphere.
  14. The north shore now has six million people adding their waste products to Lake Ontario now daily. Michigan stocked smelt a hundred years ago to support the commercial fishery. They thrived and exterminated the cold water species such as lake trout, blue pike, viscose and white fish. In the 1960's Canada began trawling them out and shipping them to Asia. In the 1970's Pacific salmon were stocked to reduce the alewife and smelt biomass. The Federal Fish guys can stock only native fish, not foreign invaders like Pacific salmon, rainbow trout and European brown trout. After forty or more years of stocking these guys, the forage base is over controlled now. What we have now is not like the past years and may never be again but it is still better than Pacific Ocean salmon fishing.
  15. Minnows are best for trout. Worms are good when they are slowly swimming in the water. A glob of worms jammed on a hook is unnatural but works for bull heads and sunfish. The minnow should also be swimming except for perch where a minnow laying on the bottom in the mud is best.
  16. 39 degree water is the turnover temperature where the water bottom temperature and the surface temperature are the same. The density thins as water warms up and colder water stays deeper.
  17. Lake Erie perch regurgitate a lot of spiny fleas. What is the nutrient value of these creatures compared to other zoo plankton species?
  18. Stay out of Canadian water. Have GPS chart plotter to track where you are.
  19. You can camp on the beach in Seward, the spit in Homer and the Park on the Russian River. All great stops. Seward has great glacier trips on the boat where you will see seals, otters, whales, eagles and great scenery. Homer has great halibut fishing trips. No where in North America will you travel through mountain scenery as the highway will show you Dall Sheep and maybe Mountain Goats. Be careful of the moose on the roads especially at night. This is the trip of a lifetime.
  20. Heroin is not an inner city problem now. Your neighbors are probably involved. Lock every thing and notify the police of strangers prowling your area. There is no place to hide from the addicts.
  21. I picked up a cable from West Marine. Length is very important.
  22. Save some bucks by using Craig's list to rent a camper from a local rather than from a tourist trap dealer.
  23. Lake Ontario is now one foot above normal and two foot higher than last year. This is due mainly to heavier rainfall on the upper lakes region over the past year.
  24. If you can access both sides of the river, cut the rivet off with a chisel. Obtain a larger rivet and same size drill. Drill out a larger hole and put the new rivet in place. With a steel tool with a hole the size of the rivet, pound the sheet metal to make it tight to the rivet. Then set the end of the rivet over to make it tighter. You need a helper to hold the head of the rivet while you pound things solid.
