  1. It is a good idea to test a couple of old flares so you are experienced with them in an emergency. The Coast Guard has their people test them annually.
  2. It is good you test them, why save them when they are not approved and are an unnecessary hazard on your boat?
  3. Power trim and tilt is real handy especially at a shallow launch ramp.
  4. Test your old flares and you may find you are unable to twist off the cap. Another regulation you are stuck with.
  5. Before you buy, pick them up and check the expiration date. I have seen big retail outfits selling six months old flares.
  6. At Wanchese there are charter boats that will take you out forty miles to the Gulf Stream this time of year. Check out the tuna they take and then take a trip.
  7. In extreme cold weather I saw a car burn when filling his tank with a plastic gasoline can. When filling your portable boat tanks you must put them on the ground to prevent a spark. Your built in tank needs a ground wire installed and a metal fuel nozzle for safety.
  8. Canada is also supplying power after we lost the jobs and tax base now.
  9. With all the industrial plants shut down in New York, there are no customers for the power. Also being shut down is a nuclear plant at Oswego.

  15. The size of the smaller kings was discussed and along with forage concerns, the water temperature for metabolism was considered as the sixty days extra cold water condition limited fish growth.
  16. Tap water destroys your battery as it contains caustic that neutralizes your acid. Use only distilled water to replace water boiled off from high charging rates and long term charging.
  17. A key to battery life is your charging system. It is best to install a three stage charger in the boat. It consists of a high rate charger, a finishing rate to top it off and a maintenance rate of pulses every few seconds that will not boil the water out. My boat is hooked up all year when it is parked, even winter and the batteries are ready to go after seven years now. There are chargers at your marine store that will maintain three batteries at once.
  18. Watch the Lake Erie surface water temperature and when it reaches 45 degrees and higher the fishing will turn on then. Side planers trolling stick baits in shallow water that is warmer work well. Deeper water with spoons high in the water column work well. Bottom bouncing minnows in the current of the bar works well
  19. Lake Erie needs more information on yellow Perch. Keeping their numbers under control is very important to walleye fry success. Our youngsters are happier catching perch rather than Walleyes and bass and they are our future. I see more perch fishing boats than Walleyes lately . Do not ignore these guys and have a greater promotion of this activity.
  20. Replace lost rods on the EZ steer and your wallet takes a big hit.
  21. Charter Captains are not retired, half their time is caring for the boat and gear, promoting and paying the bills.
  22. There is no national data base for stolen guns.
  23. My neighbor,a police officer, had his guns stolen from his rural home. They were found in PA with forty other guns. Our police never check out other states so out of state plates could be the culprits.
  24. First marry a wife who earns enough like a registered nurse or teacher.
