  1. Most I/O engines need high octane fuel due to their high compression engines. Running low octane gasoline will damage the engine. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  2. The nation is awash with ethanol due to its poor mileage performance. It takes ten gallons of ethanol to travel as far as six gallons of gasoline will take you. It is time for this rip off to end. Our gasoline is now being exported so why is this still going on?
  3. You risk taking a swell over the stern with too much weight on the transom of a small width boat. An extra tank and the battery are needed to be considered also. You may best be getting a small four stroke engine like a forty HP that can troll as you need.
  4. Heavy weather coming up would make it dangerous to go out on the bow to retrieve the bag. Install new cleats where access is safer to retrieve the bag.
  5. Good combination outfits with a chart plotter can be had for that budget. Lowrance and Garmin have built in depth contours that make trolling easy.
  6. Occasionaly reel the lure up from the bottom as the lakers will chase it up. Sort of like vertical trolling.
  7. Salt water helps preserve old wood boats. Fresh water contributes to decay. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  8. The Health Department never approves anything. They always look to find something to stop everything proposed to cover their behinds. Too much regulations are their way of life. It is too bad they can not find a way to stop taxes, then things would be better.
  9. Do not add a ring of packing, replace them all at once. The old packing is harder and will score the shaft. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  10. The way this country is going, soon you will be eating sheep heads. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  11. Check your fuel filter first.
  12. Over forty boats out yesterday evening between Wanakah and the Woodlawn Bar.
  13. Getting gobies? Go out and look deeper.
  14. It is the first few moments during start up when the cold 40 weight oil fails to reach the wear points of the engine. Nascar engines use 0w50 weight oil, though expensive, they get quick lubrication and less windage and friction to achieve higher power.
  15. Some people tee off the kicker engine fuel line from the main engine fuel line. This allows air to be sucked into the small engine fuel line from the vent fitting on the main line. Connect your kicker direct to its fuel tank and keep them separate.
  16. Your biggest danger is a small boat operating at high speed without regard for other boats out in the fog. They and most other boats do not have radar.
  17. Seventy per cent of engine wear is on start up where the fresh oil needs to get there fast. 10w30 has thinner oil that wears like 40 weight but gets to the cylinders faster than 40 weight. Unless you have a prelude system the multi weight oil is what you want. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  18. A combination fish finder, chart plotter can get you home and out. Not like radar but you know where you are and where you are going. Travel in fog conditions requires a speed where you can stop in half the visible directions, maintain extra lookouts, sound fog signals even if you are anchored and listen for signals from nearby boats. Simply a prolong blast less than two minutes apart while underway. Not underway two prolonged blasts two seconds apart. If you are fishing with long lines or side planers three prolonged blasts two seconds apart followed by two short blasts. A prolonged blast is is four to six seconds long. I am not a sea lawyer.
  19. Cattaraugus Creek boats are doing well in fifty foot of water. Use the Silver Creek exit on the I90. The bait shop has minnows.
  20. Your fish finder has a lot of interference from the alternator when running especially at high speed. Hook it up to another battery and you will have a clearer picture. Lowrance graphs shut off automatically when the voltage falls to ten volts. Then you can switch over to your starting battery.
  21. Snow fall from lake effect storms return less water to the lake because a lot of it evaporates away or drains into other watersheds. We depend on gulf storms to supply our water. The hydro plants on the St.Lawerence River are the major lake level control factor. Did your furnace motors have power this winter, one of the worst in late history?
  22. The fuse on the second battery should be close to the battery on the positive terminal lead. I smelled electrical wire burning one day when the insulation frayed on that wire and melted. Also there are different battery disconnect switches. The better one disconnects the alternator wire first when switching the batteries when the engine is running. It prevents the diodes from surging high amperage current when no voltage is present and will burn out the diodes. If you use the simpler switch always shut your engine down before switching.
  23. One boat at Sturgeon marina had 95 perch and two Walleyes this afternoon. 57 foot of water. Most boats were out of sight from shore so the action must be deeper now. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  24. What is the max pressure stated on the tires? There is your answer. Some trailers tires call for 90 psi Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
