When the warmer Ohio water reaches our area after the last ice is gone the Niagara Bar will be on fire. Fortunately this year a week of east winds kept the deep ice pack from forming and the ice stayed scattered and exposed to the sun for a long period. Now keep an eye on the water temperature flowing from the Welland canal ports and Youngstown.

Some open water along the south shore but plenty of scattered ice all the way to Ohio. It should be gone earlier this year though as it is not packed deep and solid now. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Bare aluminum needs an etching primer, then an underwater or above water primer, then the finish paint. Antifouling paint for aluminum must not contain copper. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

The Coast Guard only paints it underwater and identification areas of its aluminum boats. This saves on weight, paint and scratch repairs. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

The Columbia River yielded a twenty eight pound walleye last year. The New York record Walleyes are not from the Great Lakes but from the Kinzua Reservoir, part of the Ohio River system that show different genes from our lakes. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

There are two types of battery switched. One is a simple on and off with a choice of single or both battery operation . The other has an alternator disconnect circuit to protect your alternator diodes that will burn out when you change the battery while your engine is running in case you do this. The alternator senses a low voltage condition while switching and sends a high surge of power that the diodes can not handle. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Two cycle oil is not used over and over for thousands of miles like an automobile engine. It flows through the engine momentarily and goes into the atmosphere. Really the old cheap oil has worked for decades in outboard engines that are water cooled. Now your air cooled weedwackers are short lived. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Lake Erie Canadian commercial fishermen take over a million dollars of whitefish annually there. If they are so abundant there they are also in Lake Ontario. Lake Huron is also loaded with whitefish. Yankee fishermen are missing the boat. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Your water temperature reading is very important as Browns congregate in shallow warmer water where the bait is. Look for streams, ditches, even sewage outfalls where the water is warmer. Hang around the warmest water. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Floating stick baits do not sink and snag in shallow water when you have to stop for any reason. Stay away from spoons. Long lines do not produce well in shallow water. Use side planers for success as your boat spooks the fish off to the side away from your boat and out where your planer boards are out there. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

The Keuka Lake ice fishermen have had a ball with lakers this winter. They drop to the bottom with 3/4 oz Cleos or jigs and reel them up to the surface and are whacking the lake trout on the reeling in the line. Would this method work on Ontario? You will have to try it. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Yesterday AM I found crystal clear waters, low flow and zero fish along with seven cars along the creek. This wild fish and no stocking program is a failure as our finest trout stream does not serve our youth and future anglers. All the old men with fly rods were not there either. These boats are special designs for this area. Double hulls, low center of gravity and bullet proof windows are needed to receive approval for these trips. 8 to 10 people are killed annually here trying this trip. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Fishing eggs in our streams and rivers
jimski2 replied to Yankee Troller's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Hatchery fish are nurtured in a warm spring or well water environment all winter with complete nutrition and released to the wild at a survival size while stream hatched fish have little growth rates in the low metabolic state offered in icy water. Being smaller they are consumed as forage by the larger fish in Lake Ontario. -

After fishing the shared waters of the lower Niagara River for years it was very scary seeing an American boater taken off his boat in handcuffs and his boat driven away. Be very careful out there and make sure you cross all the T's and dot the I's. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

A flare pistol will put you in handcuffs. Checking in with your cell phone will have you being pinged where you travel. A dwi will bar your entry even as a passenger. A felony is bad also. They have taken the Homeland Security deal to a higher level now. A can of beer is a ride to jail. Be very careful there now. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
Fishing eggs in our streams and rivers

Hatcherys are the source for our trout. We need the funding to keep them operating. License sales make this happen. Natural reproduction adds small forage for the salmon and other predators. Less fishing opportunity results in closing hatchery operations. Dam do gooders are always trying to change things for their own gain as they want the streams to themselves.
