  1. Compare your lures action with the paddle wheel speed and determine the most effective fishing speed for your paddle wheel indicator. Speed over ground is not what your water speed is due to currents that effect your lures action. You must consider that in the lake there are currents the same as in a river. Air pressure systems and winds change the level of the lake from one end to the other all the time so a lot of water moves back and forth or even stops moving at times. You become aware of certain steering courses are better at catching fish some days and the currents have a lot to do with that. A change of a three quarter knot in the direction will make your lures ineffective.
  2. A tee for fueling your kicker will allow air to be sucked in from the other engines fuel hose where it connects to the engine. Best to run your kicker on another tank.
  3. Forty boats off Evangola Park yesterday.
  4. http://www.coastwatch.msu.edu/ontario/o1.html Now we have to watch for the warm waters, especially along the shoreline. Look at the Canadian shoreline with the high population and industry around Toronto.

  6. Low battery voltage will automatically shut your electronics off to prevent them from burning up. Check your battery voltage when this happens although the voltmeter on your electronics is unavailable.
  7. Old V belts become glazed and slip a lot. A new belt needs to be retightened after an hour of running since they stretch after installation.
  8. His Hamburg store is well stocked with lures used by local fishermen and demonstrates that "local knowledge" is important. Something the "big box stores" fail to appreciate when you drive there and do not find the hot lures you desire.

    Proper oil

Boats are rarely used in below zero temperatures around here so that is why 30 weight oil is advised. For fuel mileage the newer synthetic blends work better but the thermostats in your boats engine do not reach over 200 degrees F which is what the newer oils are designed for.
  10. My son "filled the tank" and I ran out of gasoline eight miles out. He said the pump shut off so he assumed it was full. Be careful you add enough fuel add do not trust the "pump shut off" system. The sin was he fished for three days and added one gallon of gasoline. He never used the boat again.
  11. Yesterday the Canadian shoreline had ice all the way to Port Colborne. It will be some more time to clear the lower river of ice.

  13. Warm wheel bearings will suck water into the bearing area every time to you launch your boat and the hubs go into cold water, seals or not. The good synthetic grease will protect your bearings, the old soap based greases will dissolve in the water. You really can not get by with water there every time you launch. The best move to make now is to jack up each wheel at the axle and spin the tire. Any noise or growling present means to change and lube your bearing now, not on the road. If you see your wheels wobbling going down the road in your rear view mirror, you are in a bad situation.
  14. Stay away from the Seneca Niagara Casino, it is a very, very, very bad place.
  15. An increase in King Salmon Limits this year will allow resident sport fishermen to take three Kings for the season, up from one last year. Enjoy your fortune here on Lake Ontario.
  16. The shortest run to the supply battery is best with 12 volt systems. Aircraft have 24 and 32 volt systems due to the longer runs from the battery.
  17. You can ruin a bearing by "overgreasing" it. Bearing buddies can add to your problems.
  18. Never done, you will always be sinking more cash in it.
  19. Back in the 1950's there were a lot of 14 foot cedar strip boats around. Made around Lake Nipigon in Canada. When trailering them you took the 10 HP outboard off the transom. Then aluminum and fiberglass boats came around and the cedar boats disappeared. I used a 14 foot cedar strip lapstrake boat in Ketchikan in the early 60's.

  21. Could the alarm be for your oil level in the tank? Usually there is a temperature sensitive dab of paint that changes color when the engine overheats, check it.
  22. Blue high temperature disc brake wheel bearing grease, synthetic I believe. Do not use the old brown stuff.
  23. The small light wire hooks on most Rapala's are fine for small walleyes but larger hooks are needed to hold onto the big Mama's. I have had Kings straighten the hooks on J13's several times.
  24. Electric brakes are better. They work off your brake light signals and they need a back up release to launch your boat. Some states have laws requiring brakes on 1,000 pound trailers and like to issue citations to out of staters.
  25. Maybe Cuomo hired his buddy Obama's IT person.
