running both main motor and kicker off of one battery
jimski2 replied to youngknight's topic in This Old Boat
I removed my second battery to better balance the boat after I installed my 9.9 Honda. If my battery failed I can easily start my kicker with the pull cord and it has a 6 amp charging alternator that will help start the main engine. Running both engines at the same time has not been a problem for the past five years and the transom height is a little safer especially when I hang my big butt over the stern to net a fish. -
The USCG has a poor perception of propane on closed boats since it settles into the lowest areas and explodes, similar to gasoline leaking. It does not put carbon monoxide into the area and is used on forklifts in warehouses. Engine life is extended as no carbon or sulfur compounds will contaminate your lube oil.

White oak handles the marine environment well and is strong.

From dawn to the sun comes up, near shore fishing is good. After the sun rises higher we moved out to deeper waters like 50 foot.

If the wire supplied will reach the battery terminals direct you are OK. If you need to extend the wire to a battery located in the transom area go with the big wire on both positive and negative battery terminals. The amount of amperage for a radio standing by is minimal, the speaker uses more but transmitting uses the most amperage and small wires can not carry the load demand of a transmitter. 12 volt DC current is very weak for longer wire runs.
-
To fully transmit with 25 watt power, you need 10 gauge wire as your instructions will tell you to use. Hook the wire direct to your battery.

Just stopping without anchoring while crossing Canadian waters can be considered a violation. The best way to fish Canadian waters is to trailer your boat over the bridges with your passports or enhanced driver's licenses and then your USA and Canadian troubles are safer for you. The St. Catherine's Game and Fish Club has a fine launch at Port Dahlousie to use. Remember a DUI violation can deny entry for your crew. One memorable outing their in the early spring fishing resulted in ten kings landed near shore waters before 8:00AM. J13 Rapala's were hot and after the sun came up above the horizon we moved to 50 foot of water with slow speed light spoons where another ten kings were landed. Water temperatures below 45 F. had silver and blue spoons hot and silver and green above 45 degrees F. Jim

Welded boats from the west coast area use .125 inch aluminum usually. Rivet boats use thinner stuff. Crestliner and Starweld boats made by Brunswick may be using thinner plate but they hold up better than a rivet boat.

Apparently a boat being towed by a good Samaritan flipped and capsized in Ohio last weekend. Reportedly it had the tow line attached to a cleat rather than the bow hook. Also the boats occupants did not wear their lifejackets and had to be saved. All went well for the occupants as they saved by nearby boats and taken for hypothermia care. It was suggested they should have boarded the towing boat to lessen the tow line load. Life jacket wearing at this time of year could have helped.

Get there now, bring a camera, not your fishing rod.

Surface ice cover does not equate with underwater ice packed deeper by the high winds that can shove ice to the bottom of the lake. We are interested mainly in surface water temperatures that control the metabolism of the fish and their catch rates. Lake Erie ice waters flow from the Niagara river mainly but also Port Weller and Port Dahlousie, the original ports of the canals.

We used TIG welding to fix cracks along the chines and got away with it. But time showed that the aluminum in the boat became old and subject to other cracks later.

There are two types of selector switches. A simple one and a switch that has an alternator disconnect switch installed that removes the alternator before shutting off the battery. The alternator diodes blow out if the engine is running and you throw the simple switch to off when it reads 0 voltage and surges a bunch of amps through the diodes destroying them and your alternator.

Reports from the meeting were an awareness that the fish have digestive systems loaded with particles of plastics that are not passed and could decimate our fishery. Lake Erie walleye and perch should be in good supply again for the next several years. Bass are good now and for the future. Cold water fish will be discussed next week at the club meeting on Thursday, 7:00 PM. Sturgeon have been captured in greater numbers now that gill nets are being used to a greater extent for study. Algae blooms can be deadly to people and pets and are atributed to people living near the shore and farm practices such as ethanol corn production.

Early spring, shore temperatures in the 40's. Later where the thermocline intersects with the bottom. Browns like the bottom.
