What's up with prices at Gander Mountain?
jimski2 replied to Trout Bum's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Gander Mountain owns Cabela's stores. -
Squaw Island, accessible at the Railroad Bridge, has good access at the Black Rock Lock. Slow currents hold fish from the faster river flows. Bring a chair and relax at the wall but be prepared for no railings for fall protection.

The "Big Box Stores" do their purchasing of stock without any input of "local knowledge" that your nearby tackle dealer has. Hot lures are there, not at the "Big Box" where the sales team has no input in stocking requested by customers for lures that are wanted. Save your money and shop where it will produce fish, not an empty wallet. -
With only a few days left in the walleye season the opportunity for this year will end March 15. The last two record walleyes came from the Allegany River Reservoir near Onoville, NY. Although allegedly reported in "Mystic Lake" the fisherman was checked by a Seneca nation biologist an hour before the reported catch on the ice at Onoville. These Ohio Strain walleyes apparently grow larger than our New York Strain walleyes. A Seneca Nation fishing license is required on those waters.

Consider the size of your boat and where you mount the batterys. Three batterys in the transom plus the engine while a lard bottom like me reeling a fish in and the net guy on the stern can sink the transom under water or have a wave flood your boat if you have an eighteen footer.

My Pro Mariner has been plugged in 24/7 for 4 years straight. My battery is ready to go forever. Never has it overcharged. It gives a tiny pulse of charge every few seconds to keep it topped off.

kicker advice - short or long shaft, charger without electric

You need the assistance of your main engine for rudder control as the offset trolling motor is very weak turning to the side it is mounted on. -
Seeforellen Brown Trout are not stream lived but deep water lake critters. A 68 pound seeforellen has been landed. DEC has tried stocking rhem here/

So called "steelhead" in the Great Lakes Basin are not ocean saltwater fish. Ocean run steelhead are slimmer and faster than our inbred stocked Rainbow trout that today are classified by the scientific community as salmon. Steelhead is used now to enhance its desirability by the angling community. Every Pacific coast stream even in Asia has its own genetic distinction but we have been stocking fish that survive hatchery life best, not wild survival veteran fish.

It takes ten gallons of ethanol to make up the energy of six gallons of gasoline. Do the math see what you lose with ethanol. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Daytona 500 fishing. While here for the races I went out on the Super Critter head boat at Ponce Inlet. 30 miles offshore in 100 feet of water the big fish taken were a 72 inch barracuda and a 54 inch cobia. 60 anglers aboard and a beautiful day on the water.

With Lake Erie being covered with almost three foot of ice this year, a lot of ice cold water will flow from the Niagara River and Welland Canal systems. This means the feeding frenzy on the Bar and eastward will be a lot later than than the previous ice free seasons. The best fishing will start the other side of Port Dahlousie toward Toronto so get your plans for fishing Canadian waters in order if you fish the western end of New York waters.

Big perch but a lot of travel and safety concerns here. Several miles of travel over rough ice and distance to the deep mud bottom where the best results are happening. 56 foot of water is good. Whiteouts will put you in Detroit without a compass or GPS. Pack and tie every thing double as sleds are breaking apart on the jumbled up ice and mounds. Get there early as parking is heavy and have your insurance, helmets, tow bars and registration for the law enforcement fellows.

Lake Erie ice from Port Colborne pours cold water into Lake Ontario through Ports Weller and Dahlousie. Warm waters from canada's population centers turn on the feeding frenzy first in those areas off shore. After the ice flows end the salmon really start feeding about forty some degree F. On our waters. The key to spring fishing is water temperature. Find flows from road ditches, streams, sewage treatment plants that warm up near shore waters for active feeding trout and salmon. Tip downs are the most productive deal for ice fishing. Small minnows or larger will fill your bucket faster with five lines spread out over a larger area. Tip ups cause a lot of bait to be spit out when drag is encountered as the fish run out. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

DEC proposes regs to prevent the introduction of invasive species

There is no logic in using boat contamination of public waters. This is a scheme to drive boaters from using their boats in order to bring revenues to the taxeaters. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
Water temperature in cold winter time from area streams and lakes results in little growth of the fish. Spring waters in winter allow growth of the hatchery fish that promotes their survival after stocking in Lake Ontario. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
