  1. Rubber soled shoes on nylon rugs are said to cause a charge to be built up.
  2. Avoid split rings at all times. When the big ones hit, they will stretch out of shape and the flat edge will sever your line. Luhr Jensen lures have been around for decades and they always use a solid ring because they know the faults of split rings.

  4. Put it another way, it is not the lake level, it is a bottom problem.
  5. I had a couple batterys explode from the hydrogen gas generated by the fast charging battery when the quick clips sparked as I removed them. The battery people want you to use permanent spade bolt on terminals for this stuff.

A BWI equals a DWI, lose your license, lose your job.
  7. Water cooled exhaust manifolds crack easily. Do not forget them as they have plugs to remove the water.
  8. Most important for trailer wheel bearings is the type of grease used. The old brown wheel bearing grease degrades with the road salt and high temperatures causing your trailer tire to start flopping around, scoring the bearing surfaces of your axle and putting your rig in a ditch. A better idea is to use the blue high temperature disc brake synthetic marine grade grease. Bearing buddies can have you put too much grease on your bearings also and this condition will cause heat to form and lose the bearings. Depend more on the quality of the grease used rather than the bearing buddies. Before you take your rig on the road now, jack up each tire, spin the wheel and listen for growling, squeeking or scraping sounds. If noise is present change the bearings now at home rather than in a ditch somewhere far from home. Check the tire air pressure also. When you stop after travelling a while, do a walk around and touch the wheel bearings to see if heat is present. Heat is no good and if you are putting the trailer in the water the contraction of the metal will suck water into the bearings.
  9. If you have the bucks, a Dual Circuit plus switch will allow you to start your engines with both batterys. Make sure you have an alternator disconnect circuit with it to protect the diodes in your alternator when your helper shuts the switch off with the engine running. Some older and cheaper switches do not have this feature. Another deal is an Automatic Charging Relay which will charge both batterys from a single engine installation. I noticed my three amp battery tender has an automatic shut off when the battery is fully charged.
  10. Probably does not work with the heavy four stroke engines sold now, kicker engines and dual batterys that we add because of down riggers, electronics.
  11. A secondary reason for the life jacket rule is if the response goes to the recovery phase., a lost body may not surface for a month this time of year and a lot of search time is saved. Surviving family members are denied death benefits and life insurance benefits until the case is closed. The cell phone can be "pinged" to help locate the callers position. Most rescue boats are equipped with a VHF radio signal direction finder to assist the response.
  12. US Coast Guard, Canadian Coast Guard and Lewiston Fire Company boats responded to a 911 call from a boat foundering off Four Mile Creek in thirty seven degree water. Five foot waves were encountered. Ice in the Niagara River hindered response time but the boat was reached after forty five minutes and all three men who stayed with the boat were rescued. Only one person was wearing a life jacket. The boat later sank and was lost. The cell phone and gps aided in the location of the men. Two men were treated at St. Mary's hospital in Lewiston while a pacemaker equipped patient was med evaced to ECMC in Buffalo. The Niagara County Sheriff's office handled the 911 calls. Thanks are due for the responding agencies.
  13. Soon we will have more help in our pleas as the state and county sales tax collections will come in showing a big drop as all the out of towners stay away as they have lost their access to the lakes.
  14. Batterystuff.com has a tutorial on batterys and charging that might answer your worries.
  15. Add to the cost of fuel lines that are over 20 years old, especially the fill line that is hardened up. I would forget about the livewell and use it for storage.
  16. Registration fees for boats and trailers, fuel tax fees especially for the trucks needed to haul boats, sales taxes, fishing licenses, fishing tackle fees, flood control costs for thousands of boats add up to a lot of money not being returned to the people paying them. We can not wait for Mother Nature to get us out of this predicament. Lake Ontario is regulated but the other lakes feeding Lake Ontario are all below their "normal levels" now. Snow melt and rainfall will take years to help us out.
  17. The Port of Los Angeles, CA has complted a ten year dredging program to deepen port facilities from 45 foot depths to 53 foot depths. This is to allow more foreign manufactured products to be imported there. The project was completed by the US Army Corps of Engineers with your tax dollars, yet there is no funds available for our rinky dink harbors.
  18. Minimum length laws must be observed before fileting fish on board your boat, Skin must be left on for specie identification and possession limits.
  19. The cost of natural gas in Europe is triple our cost here and the European nations are relocating manufacturing plants to the USA now due to our lower energy costs. The cost of a ship to install and maintain these water sited turbines is never mentioned . Wind turbines in Downtown Cleveland do not have Homeland Security laws limited public access to be near them, Why would the water make a diffference? Why would we export our natural gas by liquifying it and shipping it to China and Europe when we can return to the USA the manufacturing jobs that caused our high unemployment?
  20. First thing is to ice the fish on board the boat as soon as they are landed. Put several inches of ice in the bottom of the cooler to keep the gurry that drains from the intestines of the fish. Removing the gills and intestines is important. Alaskan fishermen place the fish in a saltwater brine that is cooled well below freezing by ammonia refrigeration, then dipping them in fresh water to glaze the flesh to keep air off it. That is how the prized salmon returns top dollar at the markets and restaurants.
  21. It seems the site will copy but not paste here. Picture is there.
  22. After eight decades of higher than normal lake levels, normal water levels are not acceptable any more due to a lack of maintenance dreging over the eighty years. We have to accept that "normal levels" will continue into the future and we cannot defer to future maintenance any longer. Maybe an inch of sediment built up every year but after eighty years that is a lot of navigational use lost. The state has collected money from boaters and used it every where they needed votes and now it can not be stolen from the boating community anymore.
  23. Full Story in Ohio Gamefishing, Lake Erie reports.
  24. Brobeil Marine in Buffalo suppled me with parts for a WW2 outboard motor once. They have been around forever and have tons of old parts.
