Over a month or winter charging periods are where trickle chargers can do damage. Overnight or two they are fine but long term charging will cook the water out of a battery with a trickle charger. The modern chargers give a small pulse every few seconds to top off a charge on your battery after it is fully charged.

Decades ago we would trailer our Cedar Strip Nipissing boats with the engine removed and lying in the deck of the boat, mainly to save the transom.

The whole deal behind this topic is to enlighten and motivate you to contact our elected officials to open up the pursestrings that hold our money for registrations and fuel taxes tht have been collected for years and do some dredging and maintenance for our ramps, docks and channels. The state of Michigan has passed millions of dollars to fix harbors on Lakes Michigan and Huron. New York politicians do not even comment on the situation. What will it take to get some movement? Do we have to blockade the roads with our trailer boats on the Fourth of July to have our ramps and docks taken care of. Albany can pass gun legislation overnight to increase their revenues but does not want to see the problem that their neglect is responsible for.

Hatchery fry immediately start their growth as they are growing in a geothermal water temperature source. Springs and well water comes into hatchery use at about 55 degrees year round. Salmon River fry have to deal with near freezing temperatures all winter long and part way into spring with the snow melt as the main influence in the river stream water temperatures. The fry need temperatures to rise above 45 degrees I believe to have their metabolism increase enough to start their growth process. Possibly a lot of stream fry do not hatch till spring water temperatures rise. The hatchery source fish have a several month egg hatch and growth start compared to stream source fish. The DEC study reported though at the end of three years of Lake Ontario life span, both hatchery and stream source fish are comparable in size. The hatchery stocked fish due to their greater size are less vulnerable to predation by those critters in the lake we seek out there. The hatchery fish are more successful to being recruited to adults and strange things can cut short wild stream production. rates.

Counting on rain and snowmelt to raise the lake is sort of futile if the rain and snow is generated from lake effect storms. We are returning water to the lake but we lose a lot from evaporation over the land. We need events like hurricanes from the Gulf and Ocean to really raise the lake water levels.

Trickle chargers are known to boil out the water in a battery if you leave them on too long. Deep cycle and starting batterys have different charging voltages so make sure your charger is set for the right type. The three stage charger I use is left on my battery all year long and I have never had a battery problem [kiss of death] over three winters. It can charge two batterys at once.

The marking project is to prevent overstocking Chinook Salmon as happened in Lake Huron. You have to handle on the stream hatched fish numbers and can the lake support the numbers of stocked fish is my take on the marking project. Skinny ten pound Kings is what is trying to be avoided.

Operational costs are not being addressed. Towing an 18 foot boat needs a smaller vehicle which allows for more travelling and fuel costs for the vehicle and boat are lessened considerably. Dream boats are nice, but affordability to operate them have become a big problem today.

I have been out on the water on the lakes in 17 footers one October, I was bulletproof at that age. We were caughtup in the PWT blow in Dunkirk one year where the waves peaked at ten footers. Our 21 foot boat was vertical ready to blow backward.and on some boats the outboard engines went under water. When it gets rough, remember it could always get rougher so get in for no fish are worth losing your pension and Social Security checks for.

"State of the lake"--Lockport NY--TONIGHT
jimski2 replied to Capt Vince Pierleoni's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Half the King Salmon out there are now sourced from the streams of Lake Ontario, they are slower growing but max out to hatchery bred salmon size at maturity. The size of Kings being caught are acceptable and the numbers being caught are high again. Lake trout numbers are coming back. Brown Trout numbers wil be down slightly due to a hatchery program failure but the hatchery is back to full production now. Steelhead numbers are good. Coho salmon are being stocked at a smaller number but a study is ongoing to go with fingerlings for better survival with all the Kings. Atlantic salmon are being promoted a lot in Ontario so you should see more of them now. Angler numbers from out of state are highest on the Salmon River. Forage fish are being supplemented with ciscoes{herring} and alewive numbers and size are back up without concern for the forage crash that happened in Lakes Huron and Michigan. Bass and walleye fishing trips are down on Lake Ontario. -
If the lake is too rough for an 18 footer, it is too rough for a 24 footer also.

With all the battery, fuel tank, main motor and kicker motor on your transom, you are susceptible to taking a swell over the transom. Be careful out there, I learned out the hard way, a couple times.

My 9.9 hp starts easily with the hand pull cord and it recharges the battery when it runs. I have more faith in the extra motor than two batterys.

Status and Trends of Prey Fish Populations in Lake Michigan 2012
jimski2 replied to Legacy's topic in Open Lake Discussion
The only predator of the mussels I have seen is the yellow perch which could be the fish of the future. -
My 90 and 9.9 HP motors are hooked up to the same battery for five years now and I have not had a problem. My Lowrance voltmeter shows up to 14.5 volts at times when it is fully charging and I never noticed a problem with both motors running together when I start the other one up to warm it up before I shut the other one down.

It never was a river, just a lot of dredging made it into river size.

Buffalo Creek is running all chocolate and the lower river should have high turbidity from it.

Medium weight spinning rods with 20# braid and a short fluorocarbon ten pound leader attached by a small swivel.

Twice my Honda 9.9 trim amd tilt brought me home at seven knots. Once it took me out and we won a perch contest. You can not have enough motors.

There is a danger in overloading the transom area of a boat allowing swells to flow over the transom in high waves. With fuel tanks, batterys and big ass persons like me, it happens. Another motor may not be safe. A smaller motor that trolls well like a 25 HP four stroke could be the answer.

The early warm waters of the southwest end of the lake attract a lot of walleyes. Eighty per cent of the lakes walleyes spawn there and there is no closed season, just a four fish limit. Purple jigs are good in the shallow ten foot waters, especially near the Nuclear Power plant and its warm water discharge. Check out Port Clinton area fishing sites, there are a lot of charters available if you do not want to pull your boat down. It is cheaper to be shown how to do things rather than learning by yourself.

I pulled my built in tank after the fill line leaked gasoline into the bilges when the clamps and hoses failed to due age and hardening. I now use two six gallon portable tanks that suffice for my needs. They also can be filled at local gas stations.

Lake Huron and Lake Michigan interests are requesting the construction of structures in the connecting rivers with Lake Erie to raise the water levels in those lakes that were present previous to dredging and rock removals for the Seaway project. These structures would prevent waters from entering Lakes Erie and Ontario making conditions worse here.
