Out of Point Breeze the fish in 70 foot of water are solid schools of large and small hooks from 50 foot to the bottom. This morning there are ten boats on the horizon working for walleyes. We anchored up yesterday and landed over 200 perch, keeping 40 over eight inches with half a dozen 12+ inchers. This is really good news for the future for perch fishermen. Also good news for the well fed seagulls. Frozen emeralds and pinhead emeralds from Dave's Bait in Derby did the job. My partner had 50 doubleheaders on his spreader rig as soon as it hit the bottom.

I use 89 octane in portable sealed vent tanks. Things are fine after a couple years now. [ Post made via Android ] You can get by fine with 89 octane gasoline and no Stabil if you close the vent on your portable tanks and disconnect your fuel line when you lay your boat up after using it. Permanent boat tanks have an open ventilation system which allows the tranfer of atmosphere with high waterfront moisture content into your fuel tank with the daily temperature changes and expansion and contraction of the fuel contained. Also the alcohol in the tank evaporates quickly into the atmosphere and is lost to the environment. I failed to open my vent once and the engine lugged down, when I noticed the plastic tank shrank to half its original size. It popped back up when I opened the vent valve and is fine. My 1991 Evinrude is still going strong after 21 years of heavy service annually. My permanent tank sits in my garage now.

With the warm Lake Erie waters at this time of year, we do not start looking for perch till we are out over sixty five foot of water. We sometimes find them in eighty feet of water until the lake drops to the sixties water temperatures.

The fuse protects your wiring when the insulation is damaged, not just the rigger. I had some smoking wires once and it is not a good deal smelling wires burning.

You can play around with your dipseys at times when things are slow. Let them out deeper, slowly pull them up, trip them and float them to the surface when you pass over a group of large suspended fish. Things happen when you change the presentations.

In response to Mark Komo regarding our walleye setups on Lake Erie, our typical setup is one or two downriggers with worm harnesses no more than 50 foot back set at five foot off the bottom. The majority of fish taken come not from the downrig but when we pop the harness free and slow float it to the surface after we mark groups of suspended large fish. The lead back is short to prevent entanglement with our Dipseys. Dipseys are setup with the outboard set on a three bottom weight setting 135 foot out or deeper when you are below 55 feet of water. The inboard dipseys are on a one to one and a half setting at 115 feet out or more in deeper waters. Leadcore lines are up to five colors with stickbaits such as Deep Reef Runners or Husky Rapalas that will pull the plugs deeper. Inline boards hold well on the leadcore line. Longer leads such as ten colors can end up with a pile spaghetti when sharp turns happen. Stickbaits without worms are not needed to be checked too often for white bass, etc. but smaller walleyes will not trip the board so pay close attention to the tracking of the board such as coming in closer to the boat or the end tipping down at times. Mix up the leadcore, dipseys and rigger lines to comply with the three rod rule per angler tending the lines. Bigger fish seem to come on the boards but the greater numbers come off the Dipseys and riggers. Check your worm baits every 15 minutes as the bait stealers can do a job on you.

Two radios are required on commercial vessels. One always on channel 16, the other for monitoring a working channel. Used radios are good. [ Post made via Android ]

You must be aware of the drag exerted by the belly of the line in the water. Also the drag of the dipsey itself being pulled around by a screaming KIng. Loosen your reel drag more for these additions. Clear all your other lines and take the boat out of gear to have a chance at the big fish. [ Post made via Android ]

The drag on your reel is only part of the total drag equation. You also have the belly in your line on the water and the drag exerted by the dipsey [ Post made via Android ]

The boat I think is one you can single handed fish. Nothing is worse than having a boat at the dock of the bay and you are alone.

The dawn bite is what is productive for walleyes in Lake Erie this year. After 10:00 AM, with the high sun, you are spinning your prop for very little return in the cooler. Save your fuel for an evening trip out. For the Chautauqua Conservation Club Tourney we landed twenty walleyes with the largest 30 inches, 9.01 pounds, in 65 foot of water off Sturgeon Point. The screen showed plenty of fish everywhere out there and about seven AM they rose up to 30 to 40 foot to feed on the bait there. The big one took a Deep Green Reef Runner off a lead core with a side planer. Most fish were taken on dipseys and a rigger set 5 foot off the bottom with a worm harness. Today is a blow day, the Port Colborne Weather Buoy reports 3.3 foot waves at 8:30AM.

For a drop weight, I red rubber band a sinker to my line 50 foot ahead of the end of the line and rip it off when it comes to the pole when reeling in.
