The "Early June" fishing conditions happen when the surface water temperatures are between 55 and 65 degrees. The little green algae is blooming there, the phytoplankton critters are feasting there, the newly hatched fry and minnows are there and all the yellow perch, white bass, white perch, walleyes are up there feeding. So keep your lures above 20 feet using sideplaners with 3 colors of leadcore, jets and dipseys about 50 to 75 foot out depending on the side settings.

There are worms and there are select worms. They are from Dave's Bait in Evans for the guys heading out on Lake Erie. For keeping worms over the summer, dampen them with rain water or distilled water. The chlorine in tap water is not good for your precious worms. Refrigerate them in a small refrigerator about 50 degrees setting, too warm for your beer.

The commercial fishing industry targets small walleyes and perch for health and safety reasons and you should also if you are feeding your family and friends. Accumalated toxins and bones stuck in airways are reasons to stay away from the bigger fish. Walleyes over 23 inches are almost too large for feeding your family. Male walleyes rarely grow larger than 25 inches, those that are larger are most likely females that could be good breeders. Education and attitude changes are all we need to face these conditions. We do not need anymore laws in New York State as our books are too full now.

For an anchor to hold , you need at least the minimum of three times the depth of the water. So get more anchor line, 100 feet of 3/8 poly rope weighs very little and is easy to pull. Two separate bow anchors can keep you from swinging somewhat as long as the wind blows steady from its direction. A stern anchor will help somewhat but you need to get up and down over your bow anchor especially when it digs into the mud. When we anchor up in Lake Erie in 70 foot of water, at least two hundred feet of line is needed. The guys without it have some fun meet and greets with their neighbors when the lines get tangled up in your dragging anchor line.

We took some nice perch in 35 to 38 foot off the shale shoals east of Evangola where the thermocline meets the bottom. Ran out of bait in three hours. Off Sturgeon Point, 52 foot holes in the bottom are hoding perch schools out of the current and good catches are happening when your graph lights up with fish on the bottom. 60 to 70 foot was a waste of gasoline now, search closer to shore for perch.

The new USCG VHF systerm 21 is now online. It records all the transmissions on 16 and other channels. It will locate the source of the transmission immediately. The words "mayday" reported three times in a row sets off alarms to follow up on. Also be aware all other broadcasts are recorded, especially profane, threatening and navigation requests. The use of your VHF on shore is illegal and ther new system will track false calls to save unnecessary searches and enable prosecution of violators.

The white perch will have a purple color on its lower jaw area. Hybrid stripers are not stocked here and they are sterile so they do not propagate, but they fight like nothing you have ever seen.

With surface water temperatures at 55 to 65 degrees, the walleyes will be near the surface feeding on emeralds, etc. Use side planers to get your lures away from the boat's track and find the depth for them by changing weights to see what works. After 65 degrees, head west of Sturgeon Point to 65 foot or better waters.
