Let's see that new rig

You may be having speed compatibility issues with dipsies running dodgers and flies and dodgers and spoons, cores with stickbaits, then spoons off riggers, especially when you trolled with the waves. Most baits have a speed they run well at, for instance I could not get a 5" Rapala to troll 2.5-3.0 without it spinning out. However you caught a big bow running it in your program so you are on to something. I set up dipsies (black, purple, clear) with the leader about the length of my rods, 7'-9' of 30 lb Ande or Berkeley, quality snap swivels I believe they are #4's ( bigger one for diver rods), then Spin Dr. or Church Revelator, fly leaders 22"-24". The fly should have the skirt even with the treble hook, and I always use tournament tie (fishdoctor.com for great video how to). You can also run a spoon clean off the dipsy. I usually work through the colors if my first program is not working but 8" green spinnies and hammer fly (anytime) or 8" white pro troll flasher and noseeum fly (early am or cloudy) are my best producers.

Port Bay 08/15/10
FLXTroutman replied to fireplug's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Way to go Todd, sure beats those little Canandaigua fish, Christopher must have been stoked! -
good job bob, me and huntin trout were out a couple weeks ago and he dropped one of those headshakers on canandaigua on wire, makes me think about snubbers, do you use them?

Blue Heron - Sandy - 8/11

way to go Ted, another successful trip with your small boat -
you can watch your wire rod bend and try to mimic it when you change direction and pay attention to downrigger cable angle too, that can help you maintain speed that you were successful at, I usually troll faster than most but 1.9 -2.4 downspeed was good for me on Canandaigua lake this past Saturday

Yes the early bite on the white flasher is good, forgot to mention that is was pretty breezy and cloudy until around 10:00 am when it laid right down and became much sunnier.

I had my wife, mom, dad, and two nieces aboard for some south end action and we set up just past the drop off in the middle of the lake working north. 3 riggers with spoons, 3 wires with flasher fly combos, and 300' copper down the chute. Attempted 2 wire dipsies on the same side, did not get wire tangles but dropped a couple rigger bites on the same side because the slider was catching the wire. Early bite on wire dipsy with white pro troll echip and no seeum fly. Copper rod fired many times, green revelator and hammer fly. That set up took a nice bow, no one wanted to reel in the copper at first, but since it took the most shots my wife Bonnie took a turn and reeled in a 5 lb laker off the copper rod. After the green revelator was getting hits, I switched up the riggers to green spin drs and green flashers but the spin drs worked the best as did the revelator in green. I tried to keep one rigger set up with my brown trout program but only managed on little guy on those spoons. We ended up with 5 lake trout, 4 of them them 4-6 lbs and one bow around 4 lbs. We did drop at least 4 other fish, speed at the ball 2.1-2.5. Temp at 55' down varied but at 70' temp was 48. We left the dock at 6:45 and had first bite at 7:15, fish kept coming until 11:30 when we decided to go swimming. Middle of the lake was best 195-250, Seneca Point to Black Point. Hopefully mom can email the pics because I forgot my camera.

Lowrance Service GPS module not responding error
FLXTroutman replied to gpiatt's topic in This Old Boat
The one thing so interesting about the LOU community and the internet in general is, if you have a problem and google it or ask a question or make statement here on the LOU, someone else has had or has the same problem. I am getting the same error message on my LMS 480 (ca 2001?), I have jiggled the blue connections, checked battery leads nothing. I am wondering about replacing the cable since it is exposed to the sun everyday sitting in the marina. Let us know how you make out. -
Oh, I forgot to mention in the report we pulled cowbells and peanuts in chartreuse and wonderbread, when that good fish got on the NK black/chartreuse mag spoon on the wire the chartreuse bells were on the rigger right next to it, hmmm maybe there is something to them cowbells.

Looking down carb you see fuel dripping in not atomized
FLXTroutman replied to FLXTroutman's topic in This Old Boat
Ok, thank you, I saw some videos on youtube on how to rebuild the Rochester Quadrajet, but I don't think I am up to the task after watching 2 out of the 4 videos. -
Need Transom Cap for 1995 Sea Nymph .... Suggestions?
FLXTroutman replied to Sea Lion's topic in This Old Boat
same thing happened to me once with my old smokercraft 14', I was lucky enough to just pound the metal flat and shaped it around cap. If yours is too far gone someone like a metal shop could cut you a piece of aluminum and brake the edges to wrap around the transom, silicone the underside and you should be able to clamp it or even tape in place until the adhesive sets. I had a low transom ( short shaft) that transitioned from high to low where the motors hung, bending and braking new metal for it could be problematic, hopefully you have a straight transom, meaning no height change as it traverses from gunwale to gunwale. -
So I was at the marina and the mechanic there showed me how my carb is dripping fuel down the throttle, he said it should be atomized and this is what is causing my plugs to foul, less rpm's at WOT and occasional misfire if I dump it quick. I just and looking for someone to concur. If it needs a carb rebuild, is this something that is not too difficult to accomplish or are there many little springs and parts that would drive me crazy trying to figure out. Money is tight, so if I can do it myself all the better, she still runs ok but I don't want to keep replacing plugs or cause any more issues due to not fixing the main problem which I can see is....Looking down carb you see fuel dripping in not atomized

Tom aka huntin trout and I got a nice early start Sunday morning setting lines in the dark just past the drop off in the south end. We worked the middle of the lake with spoons on the riggers and flasher fly combos on the wire rods. So many marks right in the riggers I couldn't believe we couldn't pick up a hit. I switched through the colors on the spoons and the dipsy rigs and still nothing, rigged all flasher fly combos too, zero. Finally reel in a shaker bow on orange stinger spoon which didn't pop the release but was shaking the mainline. Next one to go was the starboard wire set up with a black dipsy and NK mag black / chartreuse spoon out 234 on a 1.5, lots of head shaking and fighting from the fish and oops, she come unbuttoned. Too bad because I would have liked to have seen that one, so would Tom, right Tom?

I believe his reference to "Can it get any better?" refers to the fact he ate trout he caught, with scallions and puff balls he foraged and drank his homemade dandelion wine.

Bass Pro in Auburn had 3/4 and 1 oz lead head by Northland, last time I was there, white with a white zoom fluke or green jig and white fluke, like chowder said drop to bottom, jig up and fall, then reel, steady if you have a good sonar you can see the jig and fish follow, still waters are easiest if you don't have an electric trolling motor.

try to start very early on Canandaigua, head north from woodville launch, look for drop off, try east side white rock to whiskey point or west side Cook's Point to Hawks Point, early bite seems to be best for me. Wire dipsies clear, purple or black are best, with flasher combos green and green or mtn dew and blue 20"-24" leader from hook to loop, tournament ties are best on flies to keep em buttoned. White 8" pro troll echips have their days as well with a no seeum fly. Leadcore you will need 7-10 colors at least with water temps lately, try high up though for browns and bows, I run 300' copper with flasher fly combos too, good luck,

there is guy in the Canandaigua area who sells English hooks, it is painted on the side of his van, this is type of hook they thread the needle into, also a Suttons Hemlock spinner ( slow trolling) is similar as far as threading the hook shank into the sawbelly or alewife which is the more common name. If you are fishing the FLX, and see clouds of bait on your sonar they are either alewife or smelt. Purchasing the little buggers can be expensive, if the bait shop has them, and with the heat we have now, you will need a good sized cooler and cold water, and a bubbler or they die very easily.

I have a 1985 Sea Ray 230 SRV with a Mercruiser 350 with 260 hp, been having issues from low rpm at WOT, wouldn't plane out, to stalling at idle, after some discussions with woody 184 and another mechanic I ran into with my wife, I replaced coil yesterday and tweaked idle adjustment screw. Seems so much better now, hit 3200 rpm on plane. Still maybe needs to have carb rebuilt perhaps but I am going to wait and see. I also checked all connections and wires and had a loose nut on the starter lead to battery and small nut near that nut was loose too, relay or solenoid screw? Anyway I am keeping my fingers crossed and I patted myself on the back for fixing it myself. I got the coil for $65.00, pretty fair considering what it needs to do. Good luck.

What is the affect of the wet rag? Is it increasing the conductivity of the signal as it is passing through the spring?
-
If your flys and squids only have one hook, to ensure better hook ups you may want to try to tie a tournament tie, a treble hook and single hook tied in tandem go to http://www.fishdoctorcharters.com/templ ... ctor=video check out how to tie tournament tie, have fun and thanks for reporting

Hey Jason, I just picked up a couple Big Weenie's in Proctologist and Blue Weenie, since I know I have heard you mention proctologist and I love the A TOm MIK hammer. Any other faves??
-
Tom depending on where you are fishing, I would venture deeper in the afternoon, due to the sun penetration. Switch up colors greens, blue/silver, black/ green. Example two riggers, 85 and 95 or rigger 80-100 and dipsy 260-285, you may even run a spoon on your dipsy, try something different you never know. This time of year the fish may be more mid lake, so you may have to run further north then you have been.

Question about bass fishermen
FLXTroutman replied to Second Chance 22's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
like the blueghost said, I catch bigger smallies off of riggers with flasher flies incidentally, and Hemlock is 15 hp motor or less lake, so letsfish2day you must mean Honeoye or Conesus?
