Are you using flashers and flies as Mongo mentioned a couple days ago? Do you use tournament tie on the flies? This can insure better hook set and landing percentage. I sometimes have my dipsies out 300' on Canandaigua Lake and it can take awhile to reel in the fish especially if you hooked a big one, set drag tight but loose enough to let a big fish run. As far as reeling them in, here is my nephew reeling a wire dipsy rod I think standing at the back of the boat in a corner gives you the opportunity to pump ( and I use that term "lightly" not literally) the rod as far back over your head as you can without hitting your hardtop or canvas, then reeling down keeping a good bend in the rod like the photo. Good luck.

The whistle on the jacket is good idea, it tends to remind me of the scene in "Titanic" when the bodies are floating and the search craft is poking around and rowing away when all of the sudden Kate Winslet, too cold to speak loudly, starts to blow the whistle on a floater's jacket.

I ripped this from GLAngler.com, posted Friday August 7, 2009 at 12:12 am "Lesson Learned while fishing Solo" Been telling myself I really should wear that life jacket, especially when trolling all alone. I learned my lesson of a lifetime tonite. I'm fishing solo out of Holland (went out about 6:30). Sun was down for about 1/2 hour when I decide I've been skunked and start to tear down to head back in. I'm running a dipsey, a downrigger and a full core. I start with reeling in the full core when the dipsey (with red/gold J-plug) goes off. It was a hawg, a great fighter. Put the full core rod back in the holder and work with that hawg for about 15 minutes when the full core (probably only about 5 colors was left out) goes off too (green/white ladderback spoon). I'm excited. In 65 fow and look back to see the fishfinder is lit up with fish. Real excited. I'm managing to keep the line tight on the lead core reel while still in the rod holder while working to tire out that hawg on the dipsey rod(had been back about 225'). So I get this huge shiny silver king up to the boat finally and grab the net. Wouldn't it figure that I got just a little too long a lead between the dipsey and the J-plug to get a good placement for the net. Doing my best with rod in one hand with fish at the boat, net in the other hand, and watching that other rod slamming up and down in the holder. Really excited now. He's in the net and then jumps...I'm not gonna let him get away... so I act real quick to slide the net out under him again and SH*T, I'm in the water. And I'm all F*****G alone. And no life jacket on. And the boat is moving. And its dark with no other boats around. SH*T Good thing I switched from a trolling plate to trolling bags last year. I have no idea how, but I grabbed ahold of the line on the back end of the trolling bag and hang there while being towed along the side of the boat. (cursing myself that I lost the fish, the rod, and the net) So I try to pull myself into the boat. Its a 19' Sea Ray bowrider. Not too high out of the water. But no way can I get in. Maybe cuz I'm an out of shape 55 yo ... or maybe because it just can't be done. I try till I'm exhausted. Then I see the ladder. But I'm on the wrong side of the boat and the outdrive is in between me and that ladder. And that prop is moving. I try to grab ahold of the downrigger cable. Too sharp and I'm too heavy. If I let go I know I die. So I'm towing around for what must of been a 1/2 hour. I'm guessing I'll either beach with the boat sometime tomorrow or I'm going to Wisconsin. I decided to suck it up and take my chances around the outdrive ... paddling my feet to stay high in the water and way away from that prop. I make it to the ladder and let it down without getting shredded. Totally exhausted but I'm back in the boat. (BTW - I looked to find the fish that was on the lead core when I got back in, but alas he was gone.) Karma requires that I pass along my lesson. We should all wear a life jacket whenever we're out on the water. Especially when alone. I know I will. (maybe I'll put a rope on that net too) Thanks for listening....had to tell someone and the wife is in bed.

I agree the lake reports do point to great water quality, healthy fish, and good fishing for us. Just seems kind of wasteful to dump the fish though. In the Pro Ams on Lake Ontario cooler after cooler of salmon gets weighed (they make you take the ice out) and you wait in line, weigh in, wait some more then many of those fish get dumped. If I keep it I eat it or I give it to my neighbors.

I am guessing this a good idea! Not a way to keep lakers from biting, since my spin drs have not fired much this year on Canandaigua Lake. Wires and copper have though.

Fished the southend to Seneca Point Saturday morning, weeds and fleas were bad again in areas, checked my recent waypoints found fish but they were reluctant to bite. We moved northwest from white rock area. Action picked up near the trawler docked on the west side. Took some time to find the right pattern for the day but once I dialed them in we put 3 lakers in the boat one nice 5 lb fish and couple good eating size fish. Tossed 1 shaker back in, and when we reeled up the lines a small bow was hooked on the lure of choice for the day on the 75' rigger on a slider. The slider was a MI Stinger Steelie Stomper and took all the hits.

Uh why don't they just sit at the launch and check anglers fish and get their samples that way, oh yeah government employees don't work weekends. Hey instead of disposing of the fish they could feed the hungry DEC Fish Fry Weeknights at the Lake. No wonder I haven't caught many lakers this year, the DEC wants to have something to do come winter time looking at 167 scale samples.
-
Hey luv2fish, are the DEC netting fleas? Or are they netting fish? Hello Georged, I am more than happy to show you what works for me, downspeed was 2.5 mph on the Moor Sub troll, on a south troll, into the wind with a good chop. Mongo has said he doesn't know how I catch trout on the Fingers with flashers and flies, so I am happy to show you what works for me. The A TOM MIK Hammer fly has a tournament tie and has an echip on it between the top hook and the mylar fly body. I think somedays the echip brings them in. I like to troll faster than most guys, but I try to target the browns and rainbows, by August lakers also will hit flashers and spin drs etc at 2.5-2.9 mph. down speed.
-
The fleas were worse in the mid lake area over very deep water, could have been related to wind over the weekend on Monday's outing.

Saturday morning we marked fish right off the drop off in the south end so I decided not to run up to the north end where all the big browns and fish seem to be living these days. Working an east troll towards the white rock yielded lots of weeds, trolling north we were marking lots of fish but the weeds were terrible. Outside of the weeds no fish, in the scumline and floating weeds, the fish. So we circled northwest, cleaning lines and resetting, rolling in the waves trolling northeast back towards Whisky Point. Trolling south in 145 FOW the wire rod out 135' fired, the wind had picked up so the lines were getting some nice action, my nephew Zane worked the fish while his brother Logan drove the boat. We netted a beauty 7 lb brown. We hit that waypoint a few more times picking up 2 lakers, one a shaker off the DW Dirty White Boy and 3 lb keeper off an NK 28 Gold Watermelon. The Church Revelator green blade chrome/ prism attractor with the A-Tom-Mik green Hammer fly with an echip took the big brown and another laker. We ended up 4 for 4 with with the one shaker. The nephews had a good time and I was glad we put a nice brown in the boat in the south end. getting down to business the happy angler hot set up on the wire diver took this pic on Monday's trip of the coolest little boat on the lake only boated 1 laker and the fleas were the worst I have ever seen especially bad from Seneca Point to Vine Valley in the deepest water.

Leadcore off of an inline planer board?
FLXTroutman replied to FLXTroutman's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Ok, can you still run dipsies and riggers and reel the board up to the side with out issues? I like how you described your technique. -
"You can't can't buy any more fishing crap for 2 years!" But I need some track, more rod holders and a Furuno FCV 585!!

ANOTHER HUGE BROWNIE IN THE FINGERS!
-
Can you run a 5 color or 10 color core off of an inline planer board, rigged to release and slide down to a bead and swivel on your leader? Or would the board sliding down the leadcore cause a breakoff? I could rig to not release and reel board in to remove it off the backing but I just was wondering since I like to let the board slide to a bead to keep tension on line.
