Hey epic I use a 9' 6" and a 10' rod equipped with a Daiwa Great Lakes Sealine LC and I use a Tekota 600 LC. The Daiwa I have had for over 10 years still works awesome. Good drags are what you want, you get what you pay for. I know that Dan Keating has recommended shorter wire rods too, I like longer rod to get away from riggers. You will want good rod holders too, like a Tite-Loc or Berts, you adjust to horizontal or parallel to water.

Hi Rick, I miss my DSX 400, I sold mine with my old boat, the color screen, the power, dual frequency, it is a good unit, the 400 screen is a little small, so I am sure you would be happy with a 6" screen with the 600. FWIW I do believe the Raymarines are digital screens with good definition. I am running older Lowrance LMS 480 (circa 2000?) with a B/W screen,

I have used Sub Troll and Fish Hawk 840, Fish Hawk 840 came installed on my boat last year. I had heard the battery stories and always removed mine from the probe after docking the boat. I also had a bad O ring and cap which the new company that owns Fish Hawk sent no problems cheap parts. I also began to remove the display when docked since I think that moisture and dew overnight, even under mooring cover, was affecting the display. Keep looking for used units I would say if you are on a budget, they do come up on this site as well as GLAngler. US price for Sub Troll at Cabelas is $459. Good luck whichever you choose, they do improve your catch, so you can't go wrong. The Fish Hawk signal is sent to the transducer, which needs to be installed on your transom, which then has cables that connect to the display. SubTroll and DepthRaider send signal through downrigger cable to an antenna which the coated cable passes through. No holes in boat under waterline that is.

Hi Ray K, Just wondering, have you not been taught the tournament tie yet? Just take a look at one your rigged flies and take some 40 lb flourocarbon snell on the treble, then add your beads and snell on the single hook, making sure the snells are just as long as your fly, and Voila you just saved a few bucks. I fish for trout in Canandaigua, but have caught smallies trolling with flasher/flies down 50'. Lake O is the best. You were in great lakes angler with hammerhead Jim right? That's how I knew your name was Chuck.

There used to be 2 roads into the VA Hospital in Canandaigua, but since 911 they closed 1 of them. Now the road that 's open takes all the traffic. Kind of dumb if you ask me especially if you bought a house on quiet city street which is now busy with traffic all hours of the day. Who is going to target that place, and who patrols Ginna? How many damn terrorists or pirates are on Lake O anyway? In the winter time, if you want to fish out in boat and it's 9 degrees, I think you get a pass Chuck, at least if I was in charge.

Hey chowder, I was running mtn dew spin dr with a Hammer fly on the copper mostly, sometimes a white 8" echip Proll troll flasher if it was cloudy. I run glow squids (google John's sporting goods) off 8" and 11" flashers usually 11" on riggers the 8" on riggers or wire dipsies. I have caught browns and rainbows as well lakers off the squids on flashers. I like to troll fast to attract the brows and bows running those baits higher in the water column.

I connect Spin Doctor with a fly with 22" leader from loop to treble to snap swivel and run it down the chute. I bought it prerigged. The backer, copper marked every 100' with black shrink tubing, the tricky part to me is the connection from copper to flouro leader. They use a tiny Spro swivel and a haywire twist (no knot) ala The Fish Doctor which is shring tubed also. This tiny swivel will pass the through the guides of the rod and spool right onto the reel. The only other tricky part is letting out the line nice and easy, thumbing the spool since the spool will pick up momentum in free spool mode as you let line out and you will have the worst birds nest you ever saw if your not careful. Many thanks to my peeps for the props you are too kind. Hey chicong, I suspect you are pulling copper like some guys I know since you are using fixed Pflueger spoons. When we speak of running copper I am using a 9'6" rod with a very very large Penn levelwind reel with dacron backing and 45 lb. copper line with a 30' flourocarbon leader. The reel I have has 600' of copper line, if I let out 300', it gets you down around 66'. (22' of depth per 100' out, is the general consensus). The above mentioned techniques such as wire dipsies, downriggers, and copper line are all deadly especially when run all together. When you have a program with all the different methods set up you increase your odds since you get more flash, vibration, and attraction to your spread. I run flashers with flies and squids typically and as the guys have stated as well as the owner of the marina where I keep my boat I crush them.

Some small creeks with good fishing are better kept to yourself, just check out sandersfishingguides.com, http://www.sandersfishingguides.com/bb/ ... php?t=4887 as you frequent this board more you will see that when the salmon and steelhead are running all the snaggers come out to "fish", just read some posts about the genny, oak orchard, etc. So if you have good stream and creek fishing up near Fairhaven enjoy yourself and your clean, moron free stream, the last thing you want is a van load of "bennies" or "immies" showing up and "taking" your fish and "leaving" their garbage.

I can chime in as an observer in the past for Yankee Troller. Rick actually had 2 guys observe so one day you fish and one day you observe. (Not a bad way to do it IMO) I actually found it fun and informative, different teams fish different techniques. In '05 I met Glen from Spoonfed & Clarke aka Waterlogged the first year and they were nice people and good fisherman. The Yankee is a great boat and Rick, Craig and Rich are nice guys, talented, and funny (they could have their own fishing show). In '06 I went on Lil Bit CraZ and those guys were great, fun boat and in '08 Todd and his wife won the LOC cash in the Summer Derby (I think it was summer). In '07 Yankee had a friend observe both days, and the boat he was on was like just a bunch of guys headed for a fun day out on the lake. I won't go into details but let's say they were prepared. skipper I'm no expert but I believe the entry fee difference is made up in the first place prize money, ask the Yankee the year he went pro we did poor at the Niagara then at the Orleans he won first place I believe $5000 in cash and $5000 in prizes. Amateur pays $2500 cash $2500 prizes just ask Screamer. In fact, I would observe for Screamer and pay him just to observe if I was newbie because you would certainly learn more than you could imagine.

Hi guys, I had good outing with LTTroller and fireplug. I hollered out to callahagn or anybody with the vhf on, but did not hear back. We had bites on the wire dipsy out 135' on a 2 setting with 8 " white echip and no seeum fly. Also rigger bite on pizza flasher and chicken wing fly. Copper rig fired once with mtn dew spinny and hammer fly out 400'. Not many marks near white rock to whisky point, so we picked up and moved to condos area where we picked up one and headed out into the middle heading south near vine valley off the wire with a dalmation spinny. Great fall day and colors coming out for sure.
