Hughes 5/20 Report
Finders Keepers replied to woody 184's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Woody - Haven't had any time to work on the new boat yet, so it's going to be a bit before it's ready to fish. Tennis ends this Tuesday, so hopefully I can start working on it later this week. Coup - Good luck with the strike! I hope they feel the impact soon and turn their thinking around!! -
Anyone know how to register for the LOC Boat Derby - do you have to call them? I see it listed on their site, but it isn't an option during registration. We inquired about it when they pitched the idea, but haven't heard any info since. Thanks!

Hughes 5/20 Report
Finders Keepers replied to woody 184's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Hey Dale, Nice job putting a couple silvers in the boat! I'm hoping to work on our new ride this weekend... -
Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: Finders Keepers ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 4-30-10 Time on Water: 6-5 Weather/Temp: sunny 50's Wind Speed/Direction: East 5-15+ Waves: calm building to 3-4's Surface Temp: 40's Location: Bar LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 24 Total Boated:18 Species Breakdown: 1 Atlantic, 2 Coho, 16 Lakers Hot Lure: Lemon Ice, Glow Dolphin, Green Gator Spoons Trolling Speed: 2.0-2.4 Down Speed: Boat Depth: 20 - 100 Lure Depth: 10-40 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Hit the Bar with Woody and Coup Friday for the first time and while we didn't get into any big fish, we had a blast!! Set up at the green can and by the time we reached the red can we had 4 lakers in the boat with one double. Continued out to deeper water in search for the kings, but couldn't turn them on. So we headed back in to the laker grounds and whaled on them! Had multiple doubles (which would have been triples had we hooked the third rod) and got our count to 14 in the boat. Then we decided to try the kings again and boated a nice 10 lb coho and 8 lb Atlantic. By then it was getting rough and we decided to call it a day and troll in to try to get to a 20 count. We picked up another coho and laker, but just missed the 20 count. Looks like we were running a bit slow for the kings after seeing the other reports. Next time we'll nail 'em! May get back out on Thursday with the fellas....

Well, got into the perch pretty good, but biggest one was just over a pound. My buddy got two that were 1.3 lbs. Also iced a pike, just under 5 lbs and just shy of entering. Need to do a little better hunting tomorrow for the bigger critters...
-
Good luck to everyone in the tourney!! Please be very careful and enjoy this fantastic weekend on th ice! I'll see ya at weigh-in!!

Hit the ice after work today for a couple hours. No pike, but found some decent perch - 15 keepers (10"+) and had a dozen or so other keepers to the hole that spit the hook at me. Slush is going away but still a few spots with 12" to dredge through. Still a solid 14-16" of ice under the slop. Noticed open water showing up in the usual spots (north end of LeRoy Island, Under the bridge going to LeRoy, north end of Newark looked open, the channel at the south end is all open water all the way to the Bay Bridge), would be willing to bet 2nd and third creek have some open water too, so please exercise caution this weekend!!
-
I think the ice will be ok through this weekend (there was a good 16+" on Saturday). The warmer weather should take care of the slush & water crap on the top. Just be careful near the edges, anywhere remotely close to bubblers, and other places that tend to open up first in the bay - exercise the usual ice safety skills and test the ice often when heading out. I will be heading out tomorrow PM and will give an ice report.
-
Well, made it out a little later than I had planned and didn't get set-up until after 2pm. Trecking out to the fishing grounds was a real work-out today and totally soaked me below the waist! Got two hours of fishing in before my feet went numb, and I had nothing on the ice (no perch or pike to speak of)...only had one flag that ran way out and dropped the bait. Once my feet went numb I called it quits just after 4pm. Saw very few people out... Thursday will be my next day on the ice...

Heading out tomorrow afternoon working the north end - I'll let you know how I make out...

Fair Haven 2-11 (Tourney on the 13th)

Yeah, that's what I heard too. That was the main reason I targeted the other waters for the tourney. -

For some reason, I have never done well on Fair Haven. Maybe it's because I don't know the bay well enough, or it's just because there just aren't that many pike in there. All I know, is that Sodus has out-performed Fair Haven by leaps and bounds as long as I can remember. Having said that, I do like the challenge! -
Hey Marty, There are many places to access the bay and target both pike and perch. The south end of the bay is a good spot to target both and you can park at either bait shops on either side of the bridge on Old Ridge Rd. Another good spot (but a long walk) is by 2nd creek (more for perch), which also has parking. There is also access out by the islands, but the fishing has been spotty out there, especially for perch, and it can be a long walk to the good grounds. In front of Conelly's Cove and Skipper's Landing restaurants tends to be decent for perch, with parking along the side of the road. Another good spot is on the west side in front of the old coal trussel (for both species) with lots of parking and easy access, but again, a long walk, and it tends to be either really good or really bad there in my experience. I hope that helps!

Well, the fishing was less than desirable. Started off at the south end of the main bay at dark o'thirty this am, and put out a full spread of tip-ups and had 2 jiggin' rods working. Washed the bait for 3 hours with nada. So packed up and headed over to the pond to target the pike (same spot as Thu). Soon after setting the spread, had 2 quick flags and 2 misses (bait dropped). Then nothing until noon when I decided to make a move back to the north end of the main bay. Set out a nice spread and no sooner had my jig reached the bottom, it got hit and I iced a decent 11" perch. Then, nothing but a few dinks until 3pm when I had to call it a day and head to weigh-in with nada... Tourney ended with only one pike entered (11lbs) and some decent perch, with a 1.5 lb'er taking 1st place. I wish I had iced one of the pike hits on the pond - it could have been worth $60 (2nd place)!! I probably won't be out again until next weekend. Next Tourney is the 2nd Annual Sodus Point Lodge Polar Ice Fishing Tourney - hopefully I can claim the title again this year!! I encourage everyone to enter this tourney, they have some great sponsors this year and it's only $5 to enter with a BIG payout!! See the banner ad above for more info...

Fair Haven 2-11 (Tourney on the 13th)
Finders Keepers replied to Finders Keepers's topic in Ice fishing
Well, at least there are two of us in the tourney and I won't be fishing against myself! Have you had much luck on the bay this year? I've been targeting Sodus all season and doing well over there. Good luck to you tomorrow and I will see you at weigh in!! -
Hit the pond today for the first time and had a steady pick all morning on pike. Ended at 11am and went 6 for 11, all small between 2 and 4 lbs. The perch were non-existant - didn't even have a nibble. Will be fishing the Fair Haven Tourney on Saturday and will probably fish Blind Sodus. Anyone else fishing this tourney?
-
Hey GV - Sorry I didn't get back to you, I missed your post. Anywhere around the islands has been productive for pike. The Perch have been hit or miss, but if you can put in a full day, you'll come away with some keepers (you may just have to work for them though). The south end of the bay has seen some great bass action with occational pike and steelhead and hit or miss with the perch: great one day, super slow the next.

Anyone doing much on Fair Haven/Blind Sodus/the Pond? Looking to head there later this week to try some different waters. Thanks!
-
On the ice solo at 7am this morning (Woody couldn't make it today). Set up in the same honey hole and just after setting the last tip-up, I had the first flag go...6 lb toothy critter. Soon after setting up for some perch fishing, had the second flag go...7lb toothy critter. Then I managed a very slow perch bite and no more flags until 10:30 when I called it a morning. So slower today going 2 for 2 on pike and ended with 8 decent perch 10-13". I'll be fishing the Fair Haven Tourny next Saturday - time to start making a game plan!

Sounds good, will do Tom!
