  1. Ok guys, for those of you who run ridgeback rattlers, where / how do you attach your release?

I just bought a 9lb RR to run in my spread, and am wondering what the best way is to attach my release. I currently use Offshore 8 heavy tension pinch pad releases that come on a 18" tether. I am thinking of attaching it directly to the same mounting hole that I would attach the rigger cable to.

  2. Yesterday I went to the Gander in Lockport for new mono for my rigger rods. I've been buying Ande 20lb in the bulk spool for the past 3 years, but they do not have it this year. It kind of looks like they are cutting back on what they carry as far as line goes. I couldn't even find leadcore.

Anyways, where do you guys buy your line, and what are your running for rigger rods?

  3. Yankee, your Bass Boat would be just fine for the river. I wouldn't take it up in devil's hole. For the Artpark drifts and downstream all the way to the lake, it should be perfect. There really aren't any shallow spots or dangerous spots, the river is nice and uniform in that the further you travel from shore, the deeper it gets.

Check the other river posts for how to fish the river, there is a lot of good detail in the rigging, which is actually very simple. Just a three way rig that you drift along the bottom to present your kwikfish/eggs/minnow etc.

  4. Erin,

I think the best time to fish the river would be either in late october - november or like now, in early march. It all depends on the weather and the ice on Erie. Since this winter was so warm, Erie was ice free up until January, so whenever it was windy, the river was all muddy. It was muddy from november up to january so that makes for tough fishing. Right now, with the ice on Erie, the water doesn't get as messed up from the winds, so it is clear.

  5. Rich, here are a few more pics from today. Same technique as yesterday, drift fishing kwikfish off a three-way rig.

Erby, your boat would be perfect for this fishing. I run a small tracker 17' in the winter. Today we fished out of my friend's 15', the key is to have a bow mount trolling motor so you can drift properly. All you need is a rod with a main line of about 10lb test to a three way swivel, run 6lb dropper about a foot to a pencil sinker, then a 6' leader of fluorocarbon to either a minnow, egg sac, kwikfish etc. and drift fish with the current, maintaining your angle with the trolling motor.

  6. Bill,

On your old boat, did those 2 floor wells have drains in them, or did they just drain into the bilge? On my 245 Penn Yan Contender, I have the 2 wells in the floor, but there are no drains on them, they simply drain into the bilge, so I just use a 150QT Igloo that i got from SAMS Club.

  7. Bellows last longer if you take care of them properly. By that I mean lowering your outdrive after each trip so that the bellows are not stretched out and exposed to the sun. The only time my outdrive is up is when I am towing the boat to the launch. Other than that, my outdrive is down.

My Dad just had to replace the bellows on his boat, a 1987 Sea Ray. His bellows were originals and lasted this long. They weren't even all that badly cracked. I think they lasted so long since he always lowers the outdrive after each use.

  8. Fished Sibbald Point Saturday and Sunday in 7 - 12 FOW, ice was between 6" - 8" with a TON of slush. Lots of fish to sort through, saw many big boys swim by that wouldn't bite, but got a few bigger ones perfect for a fish fry. All types and colors of jigs and spoons worked well.
