  1. I was there from the beginning to end of each day in Oswego and Sodus, they ran flawless to the best of my knowledge. I have actually been involved in participation of the Oswego Pro/Am for over 15 years, I have never heard of a problem, not even 1, there has been the odd DQ of various nature through the years but again never pertaining to Closed Communication. I feel as every single Lake Ontario "major" event has either gone to No Communication or is on the brink of it, we will never rid the "haters" so to say. Closed Communication is here to stay and some just cant accept the fact that it has worked all along and is working so effortlessly along the entire front of the tourney scene, North and South Tom
  2. DJ, little truth to your comment in most cases, if every angler on Lake Ontario buys into the advertisement of the next best thing and the next best thing isn't so great, I highly doubt they will come back and buy more. A lure manufacturer may try to acquire any level of popularity for multi faceted reasons, but for longevity and to sustain the popularity needed to turn a fad into the next best thing they certainly aren't going to achieve success by intriguing an angler once. I could name dozens of lure manufacturers who were here today and gone tomorrow, you can market the next best thing all you want, won't mean a whole lot without various forms of backing power, like various forms of repeated fish catching success. I was explaining to PeltHunter a lil of what and why items become popular and/or remain popular. Really has nothing to do with catching fishermen one time, and that one sale would not add up to a job complete by any means, at least not on the Lake Ontario tackle scene where profits are minimal. (: Tom
  3. Lots of variables as to why, ever changing conditions, fads, new go-to's, Pro Staff guys promoting those who are helping them, the list goes on and on as to why we are running what. A few weeks ago a local captain out of Oswego was having a bad day or two, he claimed he was going to go home and hop in the cellar and dig out what he ran years and years ago. He went out with a whole new agenda the next few days and had much in the same amount of luck as he had the past few days. Catching fish consistently does not come easy, and that goes for all of us. Even the local hot shots who seem to put fish in the boat on a regular basis are doing much homework behind the scenes to keep the rods moving daily. Talking to others, reading the conditions like watching weather the night before and recognizing fronts and wind patters, needless to say having an arsenal of many items readily available all the time. There really is a lot to this game that many of us love. Flashers and flies are the "in thing" around the lake currently and consuming a lions share of use over other items (when talking chasing Kings and especially starting in the summer and into the remainder of the season) this doesn't mean all other items won't put fish in the boat for you at any given time. I was pre-fshing the Niagara Pro/Am this year and asked a long time friend to spend a morning with me as he is a big spoon guy, we fished about 6 hours one morning and our bites were around the same numbers as I was achieving with my usual fly spreads. Hence: Experience will most always prevail. (I would hate to have to compete against the "Royal Flush" team if we had to run meat program against meat program) !!!! Keep in mind when choosing lure options the amount of info circulating these days, like mentioned the advent of the internet, you can easily access info from reports from those anglers out fishing daily and exactly what items they are using and where they are running them (depth of water, where in the column, east or west of a given port, speeds, etc) don't be so fast to think "something is up" when a "newer" art or a continued art of 13 years now is pulling fish for many. Its great to be able to run to a local tackle shop or shop online and grab a white attractor and a hammer fly, and head out onto the lake knowing your chances of catching a few fish is good. I am sure for whatever reason if, dodgers/squid, j-plugs, Twinkie and/or meat rigs, spoons like NK's or etc. if they were to acquire a renown birth of popularity, then its possible the colors and tactics that go along with running them could be tweaked to a T and could become the next best thing "again". For now more than worrying why what is popular is popular my advice is to consume the knowledge or a part of it and head out and put it to use, the hard work and time spent that is needed to tweak these colors and items is there for you to capitalize on. This versus eating up a weekend or a season figuring it out for yourself. (: Just a side note when the art of running attractor/flies was introduced to Lake Ontario around the year 2000 (to the level and knowledge of today anyway) a few key benefits were as such: -Only having to attain a small number of item colors or combos (even though that has been brought to a staggering level of a high multitude of colors) the fact stands we could easily be able to pick a handful and be successful -To cover higher speeds with more commotion in the water and to cover much more area of water and area of water in the column (versus a spoon or a plug or a slow trolled dodger from the 80's) When any "new fad" is introduced and you still see it around after 10 years it's no longer a fad, no matter the reason its still here for a reason. (: Tom

  8. I certainly understand the passion, I'd be the pot calling the kettle black if I said I didn't. I am also sorry to you and all who had to deal with the wrath of Mother Nature, I feel it is pretty much the only obstacle that cant be overcame trying to put these events on. I guess no harm no foul at this point and we move on, it takes a lot of guts to apologize for something someone can feel so strongly about/against, It stinks for all the teams as well that never had the chance to portray their skills after much prep fishing, time off work and $$$ were invested, I certainly hope some sort of karma will come into play at another time for each. I haven't even had a chance yet to feel sick to my own stomach about my performance on Saturday, I was off my game, just so upset inside that the weather all week looked favorable and then went south in a fast action, I had to stick with a 4 rod spread as 3 eager team members just wanted me to make them darn rods move and I just couldn't make them as my head was not in the game Tom
  9. 33 Scout: I have received a total of 2 complaints surrounding my decision to fish yesterday (since weigh-in till now), I believe them to be from the same team, I have responded to that team captain with no response back except from his team members. Your frustration is understood but a few of your facts are wrong: -As far as reasons to level the playing field the weather has no dictation, 6 rods and no communication keep the potential bigger spreads smaller and keep the mass amounts of available info amongst the team members on tourney day. Weather or winds do not dictate the reasons why we promote a level playing field. -As far as your claim of a "vast majority" of boats "staying in" we had 40 boats weigh fish out of 47 that fished (lost 4 boats d/t mechanical failure and boats that never even made it to Oswego d/t issues at home) A "vast majority" of 47 is not 7 My explanation as to why I chose to fish is in the tourney section, if "you are not trying to make a huge stink" as you claim, you would take the time to read it. Tom
  10. My 2013 event on Saturday Aug 10 was a tough one to officiate, the weather for Saturday was forecasted for very fair weather/winds every day of the week until into the day on Friday, never worse than 1-3 ftrs. A spike of winds from 10-20 mph was suppose to hit late day Friday and into the night and then subside, as I watched the “actual†wind speed it did just that, from 6 until 8 pm it spiked then diminished, the wind continued to diminish throughout the night for approx. 6 hours. Depending on which marine forecast you looked at for Saturday they all varied from 1-3 to with the worst forecast I saw at 2-4’s. I never saw a smallcraft on any site, as I drove atop Wrights Landing Sat. am to take a peak at the break walls I noticed water shooting over on occasion, I had decided at that point to delay the event 1 hour and take a ride out to about 80-100 fow and take a look. With 29 year veteran Ret. Senior DEC officer on my boat out we went, as I hit about 60- 70 fow I was cruising at 12 kts. I shut down in 80 fow and killed one engine and trolled in each direction keeping a pretty easy trolling speed at 2.5 mph. The senior officer noted that he had patrolled in water much worse on many occasions out of his smaller vessel, we each classified the waves at about 2-3 with some larger rollers mixed in, I cruised back in at my normal trolling speed of 3200/25 mph. I had in the back of my mind how I saw the waves breaking the wall from atop Wrights earlier, the lake was rolling and crashing the wall but with hardly any white on the lake at all. So the decision was made at that time to make the event a go, I made the announcement on the VHF and waited to leave the dock, sparing the shotgun start as to avoid the bad water that would be created in the cut of the harbor with 49 boats. I had safety on my mind the entire time I was making this critical decision, I always think of safety whether I'm calling the shots or not during the many events I fish. As I took my team out on the lake at about 6:15 which consisted of my cousin and our 2 women (who did not want to go through another weather scenario like we experienced earlier in the year in another event), I was hopeful the weather would continue to subside. I was unpleasantly surprised the wind/waves were building quite fast as a result of another wind spike..... I wasn’t too happy for a few hours but the wind did settle a bit and the water continued to calm some until I picked lines at 1 pm and ran in. I will add that if the lake conditions I saw at 5:45am, were consistent with what I saw at about 8-9 am I probably would have opted for Sunday, I was optimistic and hopeful of making the best possible decision with the over-load of info I have tucked into my head from many years of dealing with similar situations being on both sides of the tourney scene. I am a very busy person and to be fluid with all actions in my life comes rather easily, not a whole lot gets to me anymore, but I struggled with the decision I made Saturday am, chances are if I would of opted for Sunday the lake would of calmed shortly thereafter, its just the way it goes sometimes. I extend my apologies to you (and I don’t even know who you are) and also to the 1 other team who confronted me with a hopeful wish if this situation were to come around again I would opt a different decision. There is a lot to this “tourney thing†to consider, its not for all that's for sure, and the hard earned dollars it takes to participate do not come easy, I can appreciate that. From the smaller boats to the biggest in each field there will always be hurdles, weather, breakdowns etc. and a lot of times its shear experience that get us through these times. I always have to consider trying to satisfy a majority, for those boats that opted not to fish as they may have figured it was un safe, then they made the right call, but I can never hold up an entire field to satisfy a couple boats. I remember owning an 18 ft Grumman when 18 years old, just hoping someday I’d be lucky enough to compete in the ESLO. Every weekend came and it seemed like the wind blew and I had to wait till the next ): For what its worth I am truly and dearly sorry of any bad feelings that will leave my 2013 event. If anyone chooses not to enter in 2014 due to my decisions in 2013 (even if I don’t know who you are) that is something that will never go away for me ): All in all the 2013 event was won out of a smaller vessel and the catches that came in were pretty darn great. Talking numbers 40 boats weighed fish out of 47, 2 boats did not make the event d/t dealings at home and 2 did not fish d/t mechanical failure. For the 7 boats out of 47 that did not weigh fish these numbers were much lower in comparison to many events than have been fished even under flat tourney waters. The water conditions were very fishable after the fact, possibly even a higher catch rate/boat if there were any such thing as valid comparative figures.
  11. Sure will miss Chuck, was a nice boat to be on and ran great when I was on it, I owned the same boat for many years, a serious big water vessel, some TLC and it will make someone very happy, and it flat out caught fish Tom
