Planer fishing Part 2
Jeff J replied to Reel Doc's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Greg, I'll have to look at the size on the bag later but thet are no real heavy, I think either #17 or # 22. Usually a small fish on the line will add to the pull and the rod tip will bend more. This is easier to see if the rods are the same on that side. Sometimes the rod will bounce and let you know. Depends on how aggressive the fish are. I usually use snap weights when adding weight. They look like a release with a split ring at the bottom to add a lead weight to. You can buy this in a kit if you want to. You reel in to that point and remove the clip and finish. The split ring allows you to change the weight according to how much deeper you want to get. The best way to learn is to go out and play around. Good Luck, Jeff -
Planer fishing Part 2

Greg, All I use are shower curtain clips and rubber bands. They are cheap if you loose any and they work great. I don't like to attach to the lead core and I usually use 2 rubber bands with the longer coper setups. You can run copper, lead core, mini divers, and snap weights off of boards and yes you can mix up different types of setups on the same board but it is sometimes better and easier to set one side up one way and the other side higher or lower in the water column with a different type of presentation. This usually lets you move lines down the board line easier because they are similiar presentations. I would suggest taking the time to reset a side if there are any issues with possible tangles. Good Luck, Jeff -
Greg, You can run almost anything off of boards, mono, super lines, lead core, copper, etc. The more lines and the heavier the set up the bigger the boards must be. Back here in Erie, it is not unheard of to run 4 to 6 lines off of boards. It just takes planning. Usually the longer and or higher lines to the outside to help prevent tangles. A little patience with some trials and errors will get you the confidence you need. It is a little easier to run more lines here in Erie walleye fishing as they are not crazy running fish. You may want to run less lines for salmon, etc. Good Luck, Jeff

Rick, It could be both. Lures speed up or slow down according to the direction of the turn. Inside lines on dipseys and boards normally will slow down and the outside ones speed up changing the depth and presentation. Current can also change because you turned. Jeff

I agree totally with the no communication rule. I also agree with the above post in case of an emergency. Some of us are a ways away from home and if something serious was to happen, I would like to know as soon as possible. I think that the cell phones, etc. should be collected at the start of the day and put in a container on the dash of the boat. If everyone is following the rules, the phones will not ring much. If one goes off, that person should be able to see who is calling and if it is serious, deal with that situation. Just my 2 cents. Jeff

Mark, Give Paul a call. I've personally seen his work and it is top shelf. I don't think you would be disappointed. Jeff

Proposed rule change on Pro Am ending times.....Opinions ???
Jeff J replied to Fishtails's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I recently fished our Lake Erie ProAm of of Erie PA. This is a 2 day walleye/steelhead event. I really liked how this event was run. We turned in our paperwork at approx. 5:00 am and then we could leave the dock or ramp. We could not drop a line in till 6:30 am but could run electronis, set boards, etc. We could fish till 2:00 pm and had to be in line at weigh in by 4:30pm or you were DQ'd. I liked the fact that we had time to run or search alittle in the morning, but you still had to take into account getting back into port and to the weigh in on time. I don't think that having the observers watch for the end time would be a big deal to them. They already monitor the start time and if necessary the tournament officals could announce the end of fishing like they do the start times. I personally would like to see a little bit of extra time in the morning to get out and get set and I would also like to get as much of our lost time at the end of the day back as possible. Jeff -
You most certainly can fish on Lake O with a seventeen foot boat. You will have to watch the wind and pick your days or times. How far to the fish is different from each port. I fish Point Breeze some and you usually don't have to go far to find the fish. Give it a shot and have a great trip. Jeff
