Deer observation and moon phase
ray koziatek replied to Capt Vince Pierleoni's topic in Big / Small Game
ive been hunting 40 years and their has been a second rut every year ,, it includes the doe who didnt take the first time ,and mostly the yearlings who come into their first heat ... first rut youll see lots of small deer 2nd time around ya see a lot of big does and the little ones are skittish and some what scarce .. if ya live in the same woods as much as i have been able to for the last 40 yrs you know when a deer is missing,or a new one moved into the area..and yes when ya stink up the woods even just walking or touching branches they know ya been there ,,it would be the equivelent of you comming home and finding someone moved your bed when you were out,you would be very suspicious every time you came home and very careful when you entered your domaine..ya might even move to the neighbors house for a while.. -
good for you sounds nice now break out the camera

tank check out the "tracks "after the snow that should explain the population change ,,Hope that articile on the cover of the NYS Rules and Reg. book is true.....with the state spending a bunch of money to track dogs and see if they impact the deer herd... To bad i wernt a collage edubatiated gradeuate thats what happens when you spend yer whole life dediacaterd to fishing and huntin ya dont no nuttin .....this is the first year in over 25 i havent been playing in der woods almost every day of bow and gun seasons ,,,so a few others and myself might have some perdy good info ,, But as someone mentioned this is a outstanding "nut" year tho they like(need) the proper mix of foods so it ant like their gonna migrate 40 miles away

I ve noticed the same ,lets hope it ant a 1 year thing, Ive been concerned with the dogs (coyotes) wacking way too many.. the spot i grew up on rt 414 i had over 600 acres to hunt for 40 years the population has gone from 100's,,, to tens of deer and the dogs went from ,uheard of,,,, to groups of 4 to 10 being the norm...turkeys from the 50,s (count) to """0""" it ant from hunting pressurs ,food change,or cars...you do the math im justa dumb plummer.. t

The smokeless powder is a good thing tho any muzzy should be cleaned for absulate accuracy and care after a few shots , not from the powder alone but more important the rifeling that gets fouled from lead and plastic...!!!!!!!!!! The above gun is good but the nipple hole is smaller on smokeless and great care is needed to be observed (on all muzzys) for proper discharge timing.. As you might of figured from a few of my post I Hunt and Fish with a passion (putting it lightly)..and have a few freinds who share stories and a dirty nipple hav caused a few moremissfires than i would want to hear about on the savage ,Not due to the gun but on the pretense that you can shoot many times without cleaning thus the dirty "nipple" all use a common denomanater =PRIMERS.....ant they are close to the nipple hole ,are massed produced, and due to the tight area in the nipple dont always fully burn with the extra junk plugging the passage....GET IT?? I like my Thompson (older encore) with the interchangable barrels .I have a scope on my 270 barrel and muzzy barrel in 5 min i go from a rifle to a muzzy with no accuracy lost and the triple 7 powder will clean up nice .. powder load,,,,,, PROPER SHOT (ROUND WEIGHT) ,,,,,,AND A GOOD OLL MUZZY INSTRUCTER (SHOOTER) IS A MUST TO MATCH YOU UP WITH YOUR GUN!!!!!!my first load powder setup 6 years ago almost had my gun through the store window where i bought it ,till a oldtimer said hey try these and do this...Ive had 1.5 in groups at 100 yds ever sence ... and unless you have the instinct of a trained "sharpshooter"or a lead sled .Id rule out the 200 yd shots for a while tho up to 150 yds is very doable for the average shooter...

Good for you kid ive puked a few in my day and have had a few presents handed me too! Now i dont know who is teaching the neck shot thing ,yes it is usually deadly (not always) and the Shot placement spot is more likley to move as he peaks around. a few feet of mild brush near the deer ant gonna effect the bullet 99.999% of the time so if ya gota look at what I call the vitals go for it ..their is 20 to 30 lbs of good neck roast or hamburg in that neck not to mention the extra work of the taxadermist tho most pass throughs can be sewed and saved..I like my tree stand high for that reason with 30 ft plus being the norm if i dont have a short (canopy) to interfere with vision and shot. But them high stands can have their drawbacks in a 20 mph wind, and if ya fall ya ant gotta worry anout breaking nuttin cause ya probly wont survive.. So rethink the shot not that you havent, woulda, coulda, shoulda, have been 3 words passed down in the hunting family for generations on missed oppertuinitys ... Ray K.

Well it wasnt with pride i took this pic,he thought he made a good shot, i guess it was so big (body) i thought i would share ,tho i agree with the IT ANT RIGHT side of it . I do relive a old Indian Tradition of putting some greenery Grass,or natural food in the expired deers moulth for its "spirit" to have its last meal, and I thank God for every deer I take . Ill remove the pic before Pita calls. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Ya know what i just looked again and it ant know worse than looking at a deer in a pen beining raised for food , beef, pigs, chickens, Ect. This deer had a chance to meet it foe ,Guess as a marine maybe i got "manned up" along the way .. When a took this pic the camera was at eye level for me (3ft).. ok 5.5 ft and the horns are eye level with it in the position its in just to give ya a idea of its size.. I would of loved to have seen this deer on all 4 feet and I hope i can find the "one that broke a 6.5 in. main beam" Im just concerned he got broke in the fight too ,if its too broke up ill pass on it for next years bow season as im not hunting 100% for meat their are nice pretty little does out there for that.. Yea after loosing the 600 acres ive hunted for 40 years its a reality ive had to face "LEASING" to have my little peace on earth....Unless i win the lottery !!!!

well the biggest in bow season was a 2.5 yr 10 pt ,a small 8 and a4pt,,,,the 10 was almost a shooter but with some big boys there I was kinda being fussy ,,, my bro in law took this 4.5 maybe older 2/3 10 pt 5 on right and broke beam and a nice eyeguard on left .....probly a 220 lb full 190 ish dressed.only problem was the shot placement took a couple pics before putting him down ..500 yds can be a long drag, specially the last 100 picture deleted: l&m saw 3 doe and 10 positive count coyotes at last light, gonna have to refocus my game ..
